Spider attacks hummingbirds! Rare and exclusive video of a Bold Jumping Spider attacking two hummingbird babies in the nest. There is little evidence of Bold Jumping Spiders attacking vertebrates, but this may happen more often than we think.

Watch out for Preying Mantis. They will kill adult Humming Birds.

@@southernsass2937What is upsetting about it though it's nature. The hummingbirds have to eat so does the spider. Nature never attacks out of malice either attacks because it has to eat or it has to defend itself. It's a part of nature they have to all survive so everything is pray to something.
@higurashianduminekoconnect1702
@@southernsass2937it's okay to feel bad for something but I'm not going to go get upset over something trying to survive. It's the circle of life. Trust me something's going to eat that spider cuz its food source for another animal.

It’s rather amazing how a small jumping spider will try take its chances with such large prey, as defenceless as the humming bird babies are they’re still definitely not something a jumping spider would normally try taking down. Fascinating stuff.

Well, now we know why they're called _Bold_ Jumping Spiders! When I think of spiders that prey on birds, I think of tarantulas, not jumping spiders. I've never seen anything like this.

If jumping spiders were the size of Tarantulas, they’d hunt humans.

@@yohannspider9001Not that often, although bats and birds do collide with webs, some spiders make their silk able to be seen by birds. Usually a bunching pattern nearer the centre. Forgot the name of this, and widows just have crazy strong web design/strength. Seen anoles and large centipedes thrashing on one or two strands of chaotic silk from a widow. You're correct 😅😊😅

I personally don’t think that jumping spider was trying to attack it. They are the smartest spider species and are famously curious If I had to take a guess that spider was most likely doing a “what the heck are you?” On the birds since the birds showed no sign of actually wanting to eat the spider therefore making the spider actually brave brought to approach it it’s why you will see jumping spiders just jump on humans it had a positive experience and so it thinks all humans are positive. Of course to the birds perspective it’s “what the heck bro get off”

Sure the spider wasn't after feather mites? They're a more edible size for a little arachnid like that. That said, I've been chewed by ladybirds. Normally they eat aphids but the dead skin on the back of a knuckle is apparently a good substitute.

@@HummingbirdSpot I just talked with one spider ecologist, he told me this could be three things : - Attempted hematophagy (drinking blood). One African jumping spider is known to feed mainly on blood fed mosquitoes, so it is not so far fetched, but a spider can't feed on a mobile, living preys so : - Attempted predation : Jumping spiders are known to attack insect preys much larger than themselves so it fit their behaviour somewhat, but it would have a very hard time killing one of the chicks, so : - A very curious or careless individual : Those spiders are known to be particularly intelligent hunters, and have individual "personnalities", maybe this individual was testing the waters here, or was very careless since one good hit of the bird beak could kill it. I'll try to share the video with some jumping spider experts (salticidologist) now, I hope my english was clear enough :)

Take a look at spider bite fatalities worldwide, then take a look at deaths from dengue fever, sleeping sickness, malaria, Japanese encephalitis and so on. I don't mind having spiders around. Of course, I have a bit of an advantage, being in the UK where the worst a spider bite can give you is an itchy, swollen knuckle for a couple of days. I can understand people living in brown recluse country being a little less enthusiastic about spiders. Still, West Nile Fever happened, didn't it?

Since this is a hummingbird board rather than a spider board, I think most people here would disagree with you. There is a paper written about a similar spider attacking a violet-crowned hummingbird in a nest, killing it and feeding on it for a few hours. That bird, however, was not as advanced in age as these. That bird didn't have feathers yet so it was easy for the spider to penetrate the skin with its venom. These birds were protected to a large extent by their feathers.
