The Immaculate Reception is one of the most famous plays in the history of American football. It occurred in the AFC divisional playoff game of the National Football League, between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Oakland Raiders at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on December 23, 1972.

I'm sure we're all accustomed to watching this play with the voice-over of announcers, or dramatic music, or other narration. I think this is the first time one can hear the crowd directly from the field - there's an "awww" as the original play breaks down, a collective gasp as Franco catches the ball, then a growing roar as he takes off, then a final resounding cheer (at a level I don't think I've ever heard in my life). And it's mirrored by the stunned silence of the Raider sideline. What an interesting perspective from this pov - thanks for sharing.

The moment that changed Pittsburgh forever. A great perspective of the crowd noise and seeing the ball bounce off Tatum….
@kab2138
@kab2138 Год назад
I've always been kind of amazed at this thought. The next week, AT HOME, the Steelers didn't keep the 'momentum' from this play as they lost in the AFCCG to the undefeated Dolphins. Then the next year they were blown out by the same Raiders, 33-14 in Oakland in the divisional round of the playoffs. What makes that moment such a 'forever' changer for Pittsburgh, the Steelers, seeing that it took them another 2 years to win a championship? I'm a Cowboys fan, and as much as the Hail Mary is a signature play for us, we did at least win the NFCCG the next week vs the Rams becoming 1st WC team to make it to the SB, then lost to the Steelers. The 'Catch' by Montana and Clark vs us led to an immediate SB win and dynasty.
@chriscollette1360
@chriscollette1360 Год назад
@@kab2138 The play changed Pittsburgh in that it was their first playoff victory ever in their 42 year history. Only the second time they made the playoffs with the 1963 consolation game as the other, hardly a meaningful game. It gave hope to a city that was changing from its smoky, downtrodden demeanor. It gave hope to the little guy who wasn’t favored or who was thought of highly given Pittsburghs blue collar roots. It validated Pittsburgh’s differing views on African American players, in that they scouted and selected players like Greene, Greenwood, Shell, Blount: primarily HBCU players overlooked by traditional NFL. Longevity of coaches with front office loyalty. Greatness defined for generations of fans to follow. Beat the Cowboys BTW.

First, great film quality. I feel like I'm there and I'm not even born yet in this moment. What stands out to me is what you don't see. You don't see helmet throwing like you normally do after a tough loss like Bob Lilly after SB V loss. Instead, it's like the team is in such a catatonic state that they can't move. The play looks unbelievable as it is from my perspective in 2023. I can only imagine the shock in real time 1972.

Tatum wrote in his book that he regretted the way he handled this play, that he could have went for the interception, knock the ball down, or yea tackled Fuqua if he had caught it. But he just wanted to put the finishing touches on the "victory" with a big hit not really thinking about it. And yea it was such a fluke that you can't really blame him in any way. The actual NBC camera shot that day did not go all the way to the ground when Franco caught it.. so you really couldn't tell if it hit the ground or not from that standpoint certainly not if frenchy fuqua touched it first.. no matter what really happened that there was no way the refs were going to overturn that in that moment.. if that would have happened in Oakland with the raiders doing that they would have kept to the same call as well

@rileyjackfansmithandjones8238
I know Madden always felt cheated, but it's plain to see all the other Raiders who were watching, realized they had just been beaten......no Penalty Flags, and not one Raider Jumping up and Down, thinking the Ball ever hit the ground, or the ball went directly from Fuqua to Franco. I think the most telling evidence is the guy in street clothes that puts his hands on top of his head. He was further down the line from the Camera, and seemed to have a direct line of sight of the play. He just knew the Raiders were sunk! As Bitter as this was to Raider Nation......they got away with " The Sea of Hands" against the Dolphins, and that insane Dave Casper over the head "Ghost to the Post" Catch, so, yeah......Steelers deserved this.
