Produced & Shot by Patrick Kendall Rare Backstage interview with John Frusciante about his favorite bands. 4:01 - The Cure 6:33 - Nirvana 9:37 - NIN 11:44 - Radiohead 14:28 - REM www.nirvanabook.com/file/inces...
“Let me talk about REM” hit hard. You can tell he wants to get the point across and feels the need to speak despite the off camera banter. Such a beautiful soul
I do believe he is a beautiful soul. But allow me to ask you to educate me in the off camera banter, I'm not familiar with the story and am very much curious about it
That dynamic between Anthony's singing and the rest of the band is very interesting. Since Anthony doesn't know music theory, the way he sings is entirely from his soul, and I think that makes his singing even better.
@@RotatableHorse Lol - we know the origin of those lyrics though, right? The ding dang dong's were added as filler noises until lyrics were written. Flea's daughter loved the ding dang dongs so much and wanted them to remain somewhere in the song, and they were left in part of the song
Pat was on crack when he did the time stamps! Here are the correct time stamps: 4:01 - The Cure 6:33 - Nirvana 9:37 - NIN 11:44 - Radiohead 14:28 - REM
It's like you can feel his entire soul and heart whenever he speaks/sings/plays guitar. It's such a beautiful thing... It makes me so sad when he speaks about the low point in his life. I'm so glad he survived. He's a blessing.
I really like John. The more he talks, the more I like him. I know exactly what he means about a band making you feel like you have a friend when you are all alone. Music has helped me get through my toughest times in life.
Music maybe saved my life....?!There were times i wanted to die and it happend, many times, that a song just came up,somewhere, and i thought if i die i will not hear this song, group, singer, whatever, never again and it made me sad!Because i love music more than anything!I was more than sad to begin with but the fact that was the last time i will hear that song made me even sader and i thought to myself there are still reasons to stay alive!Nothing in this world makes me feal that kind of strong emotions like music!I'm not a musician but music is my life!
Wow. What he says about R.E.M at the end hit me hard. As someone who very much understands that feeling of isolation and loneliness from long term drug addiction, this just really resonated with me. Sometimes when I feel so low, music really is the only thing I can connect with. I also love how thoughtful all of his answers are. You can tell how important it is to him to correctly convey what he is feeling.
Interesting how "Reckoner" by Radiohead was inspired by how John played guitar on "Scar Tissue." Dig that contemporary respect and influence for each other.
love the way he talked about having a friend with REM when he had no one else. that’s exactly how I feel about RHCP and the reason why i’m watching this now. They’ve always been there through the roughest times and have helped so much
Love this guy, a RHCP album without him ain't quite the same, his guitar playing and harmonising vocals are superb . His solo albums are mixed but some are stunning.
I've loved the Chili's for over 2 decades, adored John but never had the chance to see him play with the band ;-( I've also really enjoyed their latest album with Josh. I've been checking out lots of John's solo work too, there's a lot. Any of his albums or songs that you could recommend?
@@AG-ur1lj I think that the songs that we don't like, we just don't understand. And we have the capacity to understand any sort of music, but it takes time for your neurons to come together in a way for you to realize the importance of the symphony/noise or the combination. One song you like is just a gateway to the album, and then the artist. And then, an artist's frame of mind at moments in time..... Music is actually a painting in time.
wow very kind words for REM at the end there. we all have those bands that hit deep for each of us... john's made me feel like i had a friend many times too and i also feel indebted to him.
You can see his heart in every single sentence he speaks. He is completely genuine and honest! Thats why he answers slowly sometimes.... oh John. Love you
Honesty scares most people, it makes them threatened, as if they need to honestly reply. I guess it seems you/we know him through his music, so it's more acceptable coming from him.
"Let me talk about R.E.M." Awesomeness. Most succesful musicians wouldn´t think important to say a nice thing about other artist. He keeps the attitude of a fan and that to me explains why he is such a great artist.
To be fair, John was sort of rambling and was the reason for the topic being drawn out 😂 he could’ve just answered the question with a short and sweet compliment. It seemed as if his older guilty subconscious was coming back and he felt the need to explain and right all of the old wrongs he used to say about Anthony.
John Frusciante is incredible, his insight on Keidis makes a ton of sense. That was the best Christmas hearing he cameback. So excited I wanna see them Live ASAP, whose coming to Boston ✌
Never really understood JF or the RHCP. Never liked Radiohead , cure, REM etc. But the shit he said about REM and finding a friend at a time where he felt his lowest......that shit meant a lot. RESPECT!
His album “Curtains” is such honest work. I could ramble about it all day. Just go listen to it. That albums sits alongside the greatest solo albums out there.
Such a good album, love the solo on Anne, I think that was a joint solo with Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, acoustic tune then boom, two overdriven guitars come in
Wow, what an interview. So happy to see he found the way up from the hole he was in. And great to have explained to me why I have liked REM through the years, up until Out of Time that is. The world is a better place with this man as a person and guitar player in it.
Carnal Visors is the long Cure song that John could not remember the name of. Love this interview. Love John Frusciante. So lucky we still have this sweet complicated man to bring magic to our lives.
Flat out the best commentary I have ever heard regarding how music is supposed to make us feel. The bands that he mentions should be honored to be included in this. Does REM know that they literally saved this man's life?
At the end of the video, after discussing many other amazing bands from that preceding time period, John mentioned specifically about his love for REM and that their music made him feel like he had a friend during a time in his life where he felt close to the edge of existence. That’s a really beautiful thought that I think a lot of us take for granted when thinking about artistic contributions, and what we value in terms of style. I know that I’ve personally found myself moved to tears by their music before, and that has value beyond strictly clinical abilities. Indirectly, REM saved music for everyone post 99’.
i absolutely adore this man and his art and i'm so glad that he seems to like all the same artists as me. the cure is my favourite band and have been so all my life, and i'd never noticed the seventeen seconds/faith vibe in californication before!
@14:28 Is the most touching part about this video. John, if I were back in your part of the world, I would be your friend also. Keep strong man. You have a lot to give the world.
This why hes so talented cause in the red hot chilli peppers he subtley weeves all these influences into his playing. Thats a very sweet thing to say about rem. Power of art i think music has saved me on a few occasions. God bless you john
Yeah I’m excited to hear his guitar playing in the band again! But damn listen to his voice.. Such a good tone.. That will also be heard on the new album! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Great to see this footage, even if it feels awkward for him after all this time. John has always been an unsung hero for my guitar playing all these years...he's just always there at the right moments...glad he's still exploring music.
For those curious, the song he's referring to by The Cure that inspired his guitar part for Californication is called: Music from the Film Soundtrack Carnage Visors.
JK Thanks, dude. I hadn’t happened to know the song, but I researched and came to the conclusion it’s the one you named. Thanks for confirming, always feels better to be a bit more sure about great things!
In Utero is also my favorite Nirvana album... Kid A and OK computer are my favorite Radiohead albums... Listening to your second favorite band guitarist talking about how much he loves your favorite band and your third favorite band is like a dream come true.
People like John and Flea are genuinely likeable, humble characters, whose love and appreciation of what they do & what it's done for them is a lesson to all other ego-driven, excessive rock star morons in their field
Love how humble and poetic he is. He’s one of my biggest influencers as a guitar player (I’m not great or anything) but John is the greatest gift Eywa has given us💯
I'm still in fuckin shock that john is back it's been a long 10 years I admire what josh did for the band but there's only one John he's back where he belongs I'll finally be able to see him live now
Such a nice man and brilliant musician he comes a close second to Jimi Hendrix in my favourite Guitarists so glad he's back with Rhcp can't wait for new a album
That’s what led me here. Pretty awesome to hear. The size of the gap in quality between the albums featuring him and the ones without him is stagger. They’ve made maybe 4 decent songs in total without him. They are one of the best bands ever with him, and arguably, a completely forgettable band without him.
Frusciante is finally back and we're all really stoked. Our new track "inner dimensions" is out and we hope you all will enjoy the track! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v20kKBgK8Hg.html
He clearly has a deep love of music. A lot of commercial bands were influenced by obscure unknown acts and it's interesting to go back and listen to these yourself as John clearly has. Ultimately it's comes down to that love of creating a great sound. I'm not surprised about the Cure being a big influence. Johnny Marr's music obviously influenced a lot of his work on By the Way, and even Stadium Arcadium as well - for instance listen to 'So Much I' for instance.
Such an interesting artist. You wonder if he even realizes how brilliant he is and what an influence he is to other guitarists. So surprising to see someone who is so remarkably gifted be so insecure or vulnerable. It was somehow refreshing. Very human, thankfully.
When you hit the extreme lows and highs of life as he did i guess one coldnt help but becme humble and thats what i really admired about him. He is so damn real not pretentious and over acting semblance of a rockstar
John makes everyone around him a better person, you can just tell. He'd be the best friend, cousin, brother, uncle, neighbor, etc. too. I wish we all had a John in our life.
Seems like he gets a lot more excited when asked about artists he likes as opposed to his own musical prowess. We all know John doesn't like the spotlight but it feels like his words flow more naturally when he's talking about the Cure for example.
