Here's some rare action including the train itself and the terrain it is traversing! An uncommon appearance by a FRA set of cars was made on the Siskiyou Line lead by one of the CORP locomotives as well as a water car for fire suppression.
This train ran the entire length of the Siskiyou Line in three days. On day one they ran from Eugene to Dillard OR. On day two they ran from Dillard to Medford. On day three they ran from Medford to Weed CA. This video features part of the second day running from Dillard to Medford.
I chased and filmed it from Dillard to about Wolf Creek which to me is the heart of this line. The chase includes filming the full length of Cow Creek Canyon which is always an excitement for me as well. I was very fortunate to get a heads up about this a day ahead which was the first day when they ran from Eugene to Dillard.
Recording equipment used:
-DJI Inspire 2 (Zenmuse X5S)
-DJI Air 2S
-Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra
-DJI Osmo Action
Music is used from Artlist.

This was an interesting video, Dan! The water car was spraying water at one of your ground views of the train. Ron Stanek mentions in his comment that this was done to cut down the trackside dust to prevent the dust from interfering with the lasers that were reading the rail. I do not think that I have ever seen a prior video with this type of FRA equipment in a train. The portion of the railroad that you captured in this video is magnificent scenery. The Cow Creek Canyon portion was gorgeous. I am glad that you received a heads up on this movement and that you were able to capture the train on the second day of its run on the Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad.

Thanks Thomas! The water car is specifically used as a fire deterrent during the height of fire season here in Oregon. Basically all of the long distance trains on the CORP are equipped with water cars for several months. I do love this portion of the line and was really glad to get the heads up before hand.

THANK YOU For taking us along with you! Excellent blend of soundtrack and up close growl! Incredible shots! And it’s nice to watch something other than endless rusty freight cars or Amtrak.

Just brilliant, Dan. As usual - awesome piloting !! And also once again some epic scenery which is one your trademarks for sure. Also, your pan from almost directly overhead (20.31) was great. From experience I know that this is not easy to pull off smoothly. James.

Thanks, Dan. This was a great way to spend a Saturday morning while consuming entirely too much coffee. I followed your progress on my Pacific Northwest volume of the Railroad Atlas of North America. It provided a good picture of just how much curvature this section of the line has.

I always thought the FRA inspection cars were only used for Class I railroads with passenger service. Never thought I'd see one on a shortline railroad that only does freight.

I've actually captured them on a total of 3 Shortline railroads here in Oregon and it seems like every 3 years or so they make the rounds on those same railroads.

Great catch, Dan. The water car may also serve as a way to cut down on trackside dust, so the Lazers can "read" the track better. Beautiful scenery and beautiful vista's towards the end of the video. Too bad you couldn't get a ride on something like that, and fly the drone off the back porch. 😀 Maybe some rail Corp. executives will see this and agree? That Ex-CN; BNSF SD40-2 still has a sweet prime mover sound to it. Again, that part of the country is a delight to the eyes. 👍 Well, anyway, happy Trails and Happy New Year, Dan, and all you railfans out there! Post script: Thought it was herbicide, but tank says water only. Doesn't seem, enough water for fire prevention? At any rate, I did see dust at one grade crossing? Could those inspection "beams" start a fire???
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan Год назад
The water car is pretty much specifically used for fire deterrent. Almost all of the longer distance trains on the CORP are equipped with them. I've always thought it would be the coolest thing to fly the drone from a train itself!

@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan Год назад
@@7ideaproductions It is such a shame that normal operations here are ran during the night because to me it's in the top 3 for my favorite pieces of railroad in Oregon no question. I love flying and using the drone but I always really miss capturing the sounds as well. That is my main objective behind the ground shots so I always try to do that in addition as much as I can.

The summer colors are gorgeous here. Everything is green and healthy. This train's job is very important. Safety is paramount in this business and this inspection can save a lot of headache for the railroad. I'd like to ask something. Is the train's speed restricted or are they intentionally go this slow? At least you could easily chase them around. Amazing footage again Dan, this is another high quality video. I'd like to wish you a very happy and prosperous new year. Keep up the fine job in 2023 too, your uploads are much appreciated.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan Год назад
No speed restrictions here. Maybe in one locations near Myrtle Creek but the rest of the time the train is going track speed even at 10mph. Thanks so much and hope you had a good New Year as well!

Good morning and happy new years Dan! I'm going away with a few thoughts from this video.... First off, great footage from an otherwise difficult to find, not to mention reach location! The amount of research to find accessible roads must be pretty high; that or a lot of use with your google maps and Garmin gps lmao. I myself want to start exploring the region in the coming years in hopes of finding some of my first (lifer) rattle snakes, California kingsnakes (they exist there too!), and other reptiles native of that region. There are native scorpions, lizards, and amphibians all in that area as well that I've rarely, if ever seen before and I think it would be very awesome to get those chances starting this next spring. Also, I'm curious on how accessible tunnel 1 is by foot? I'd really like to get to it and document it somehow then compare it to tunnel 23 (or is it 24....I've forgotten what that abandoned tunnel number is over there lol) on the cascade sub. Finally, just a quick dji question for you. How often have you crashed your drone in the past? I saw at one point while you were filming that it looked like you caught yourself getting too close to some tree tops and had to increase your altitude fairly aggressively. It was at that moment that I wondered the question stated above lol. Anyway, keep the bird alive, Dan; and keep up the amazing footage!
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan Год назад
Thanks Mike! I would think that would be a great place to look or reptiles or any wildlife. There is a road that follows the entirety of Cow Creek Canyon along with the railroad and it's such a backwoods byway that you can go quite a while in there without seeing anyone else which is great. There are gravel roads on the other side of the creek where the tracks are that could get you close to tunnel One but you would need to heavily scout around google maps to figure out exactly how to get close and then there would be a short walk along the tracks to make it there. Yes that would be Tunnel 23 on the Cascade Sub that they ran around. Ah yes crashing drones. I've had a number of issues of losing drones between actual crashes and freak accidents that were unexplainable. Luckily State Farm insurance has been a lifesaver twice during my years of flying. I've had more close calls that I would like to admit where it was only an act of God that a drone didn't fall from the sky. For me powerlines are much more of an issue than trees. At least with the close calls mostly.

@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan Год назад
It's just how they have the schedule set up to keep the entirety of the railroad efficient since they don't really own enough power to run all of their trains during one time of day.

I can somewhat answer your question. This is a lumber, plywood, wall board, laminated beam, sometimes Nickel rail line. I used to live in Cottage Grove OR from the late 60's till I moved out in 1992. We had 3 or 4 trains going West SP (north) and 3 or 4 trains going East SP (south) everyday. The trains only went down to the Hana Nickle mine at Riddle in my understanding.. But most of the trains were 100 cars long, yep me and my late Father used to count them stuck at the crossing. The trains went to Eugene to go East SP (south) to Roseville CA. The mills work during the day and fill the cars. CORP like we used to have, empty's going East SP (south) with Southern Pacific. The part of the rail line in this video was hardly used in the 60's to 1996 when UPSP combined and CORP took over. We also have lost so many log mills, that there is not as much lumber be shipped. Seeing this for the first time 11/21/2023 it is rails I have never seen. I have ran the HWY 99 and some of the other roads to see the trains at different time.
