Great footage! I remember hearing Dixie Dregs 'What If' album for the first time as a young teenager learning to play guitar. One of the greatest albums of all time! Every note, riff and beat on that album is perfect! I Consider Steve untouchable! He's always willing to impart knowledge to anyone in any interview I've seen, the type of guy rock and roll needs more of! Thanks!

I remember Guitar Player doing an article on Morse right around the time he was doing the pilot thing. I guess after Kansas dissolved, he got fed up with "the biz", so he quit music, got a hair cut, and went to work at the airline. I remember they asked him if anyone at his workplace knew about his musical career. He said at first nobody knew, until Lynyrd Skynyrd through town on that first reunion tour (which would date this to sometime in mid 1987 I guess), and he got invited to sit in on a couple songs, and some of the guys at one of the airports he flew out of were at the show, and they were STUNNED that this guy they knew only as a pilot who also played guitar "on the side" was "famous" enough to get onstage and play with Skynyrd! I guess he didn't go aroudn telling people about being on American Bandstand, Tom Snyder, Don Kirshner, or MTV. lol

I saw Steve open and then join John, Al and Paco in 1982 at the Dorothy Chandler in Los Angeles for an encore. Steve blew everyone away when he opened, then got a standing O for his solo with the trio. I recorded it on a Walkman, snipped his solo and rerecorded for an hour long play...one of the finest musicians ever, thanks for posting this!
@rafaelcarmany463
@rafaelcarmany463 6 лет назад
I saw that exact same tour in Tucson Arizona - and yes - at the end Steve was invited back out to play with the Guitar Trio - and at one point Paco was so blown away that he stopped playing - and had his jaw hanging open - really! The DiMeola started laughing in disbelief - stood up and walked off the stage laughing with his head thrown back - he was just in a state of shock. The only person who kept backing Steve was McLaughlin. Then Steve got a standing "O" in a very big auditorium!! All I can say is: "Go Steve! You bring us so much joy!"

the 80's was such a crazy time in music (in a good way). You had SRV bringing back the blues, steve morse was getting voted best guitar player by guitar player magazine, Van Halen was in full swing, the hair metal thing was going on, you had pop icons (couldn't think of a better term) like Madonna, Michael Jackson, janet jackson, lionel ritchie out there. guns n roses came out and were new and fresh. and then other 60's/70's bands were still out there performing too (the who, clapton, etc.)....and this was all getting played on pop radio (for the most part) and on MTV. damn. we were spoiled.

one more thing - the 80s were cheesy as fuck, almost without exception.
@pb12661

Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Ramones, Motorhead and Van Halen were "cheesy?" I'll tell you what is "Cheesy."....Kim Kardashian, Katie Perry, and Justin Bieber. That's some super cheese right there.
@goodun6081
@goodun6081 7 лет назад
The British synth-pop bands such as the Thompson Twins, Pet Shop Boys and such, were DEFINITELY cheesy; also you had Roxy Music, Duran Duran, Boy George, The Cure, the Smiths, etc to all of which I say "Blechh" ! The Eighties was largely a decade of bad clothes, bad hair, bad music, and very bad ultra-conservative reactionary political leaders. On then other hand, the 80's was when I first became aware of and started listening to a bunch of musical luminaries who actually started out in music a decade or two earlier, iconoclastic guitarists and songwriters such as Richard Thompson, David Lindley, Ry Cooder, John Hiatt, Sonny Landreth, Leo Kottke, Martin Simpson, Adrian Legg---all of whom are more or less in their seventies now but still making good music !

I am a huge fan of Steve Morse. Starting with the Dixie Dregs. I first heard, Unsung Heroes. Worked my way back through their previous albums. I get everything new of his, as well. Master guitarist, obviously. Also a stellar writer. I've seen him with Dregs, Kansas, Deep Purple, and the Steve Morse Band. His work with all these greats, is nothing short of miraculous. These Days, I listen to his incredible playing with, Deep Purple, and a new band called, Flying Colors. The great thing about being a Morse, fan is, he so prolific. With his music. You get the benefit of two or three releases a year. Add this amount up, and you have an almost unfathomable catalog of fantastic music. Plus I have to give a shout out to Allen Sloan, he owned the violin in the Dregs. RIP T Lavitz. Thank you for posting.

Steve Morse a genius of a musician. I was a sophomore in high school. I was learning a lot about Rock & Roll music I. Like 84. This friend of mine who turned me on to the real musicians of the Day. I had a well man. Paul gives me a bootleg live tape cassette. Dixie Drags live at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco. I could not even pronounce the band's name correctly. He was like this the best band nobody really knows about. The Dixie Drags? Realky! Played it after school and into the night. They did this Led Zepplin medley that was mind blowing. Fan for life experienced the Diie Drags and mostly the Steve Morse Band about six times.

Thanks for this. If you happen to have any live footage from "I'll just pick" that would be fkn awesome. I worked as a roadie in Munich and got to do backstage security, as well as hump and load..lol - for Steve and the SMB - then with Jerry Peek and Rod Morgenstein. Steve is an unbelievably down to earth guy, and, since I am a guitar player, I thought I would get on his nerves asking "how did you do this etc.." Not at all. He picks up his guitar and shows me anything I want. Dont know how much I was able to absorb, but his attitude was as much of an inspiration as his talent.

That guitar he's playing in the Kansas video was the original guitar that Ernie Ball built for him back in the mid 80's. He was getting interested in guitar synths, and wanted a guitar that he could use with the Roland GR-700, so they built him that particular guitar. I remember seeing it in a Guitar Player article on whichever NAMM show, I guess he played at the Ernie Ball booth that year, and they had a really good photo of that guitar.

I'm sorry Mr. Morse, you're just too talented to make it big in the music biz. You're music is too complex to be grasped by small minds that gravitate toward Justin Bieber.
@pb12661
@pb12661 8 лет назад
+Andy Harman he made it pretty big. he got famous, got a lot of accolades and many high profile gigs. He has been with deep purple for 20 years. I'd classify that as making it big. at the end of the day, to make it "big" as you are referring to, you have to make music that has a wide appeal. his music, while great, isn't the stuff that teens are/were going to like. but overall, I'd say he did maximize his abilities given his choice in music composition.
@andyharman3022
@andyharman3022 8 лет назад
I've been a big fan of Steve Morse since 1979. The Dixie Dregs was musically the most talented band of its era, and Steve Morse won the Guitar Player Best Overall award 5 years running during that era. (After he won it 5 times straight, Guitar Player retired his name from consideration.) And after all that musical accomplishment, he left the music biz to be an airline pilot.
@MarijeEssink
@MarijeEssink 8 лет назад

The Dregs were forced by the record company to be out in the road touring endlessly, basically non-stop, without a break. Here are some quotes from a Steve Morse interview that I read years ago, explaining the album title and a couple of song titles: "Even the guy on the Assembly Line gets two weeks off every year". And another one: "Every time somebody came and took money away from the band, we would look at each other and say, well, that's the Industry Standard". Of course, taken in that context, Bloodsucking Leeches needs no explanation.....
