What a great memory! My first trip to Aussie was in 1956 on a Qantas Super Connie from SF to Sydney. I still have the little flight bag that I was given, and still remember my invitation to the flight deck - I was 5 years old. That trip took, as I recall, 36 hours with 24 hours flight time and several stops. I remember stopping in Suva in the middle of the night, walking out of the place, and getting smothered by the incredible humidity. Great Video - and Thank You!!!

Years ago Dad gave me his 1955 USAF aircraft recognition manual for the civilian Ground Observer Corps & page 164 says, "The exhaust stacks of practically all conventional aircraft engines glow cherry red from the tremendous heat of exhaust gasses. On some aircraft, flames can be seen roaring out of the exhaust stacks, occasionally giving the impression that the engine is on fire. This is particularly true when extra power is being used, as in takeoff or climbing. In darkenss, this glow or flame is often discernible from the ground ..."

The turbo-compounding system employed on those engines was quite complex and way ahead of its time and thus could be unreliable, which is why Qantas kept spare engines at various airports en-route in order to swap them out quickly when needed & get the aircraft back on it's way to London.

I first fell in love with the L1049 Super Constellation (passenger version) from Bugs Bunny cartoons of the 50's. 15 years later, I was blessed to be assigned to the 552nd McClellan AFB) and the 79th (Homestead AFB). accruing close to 2500 flight hours on the EC-121 Super Connie with the USAF. Finest 3 engine aircraft ever built. And like a Harley, if she wasn't leaking oil, she wasn't running. Grab a spare chute for a pillow, your flight jacket to cover yourself (well, cover HALF of yourself), and let the steady drone of the 3350's lull you to a 2 hour nap that felt like6 hours of peaceful sleep. And FWIW, the FIRST "non-medical" female crew members in the military were surveillance radar operations on the Connie, back at the 79th, Homestead.

There was only a curtain that separated the cockpit from the cabin. You could hear when the pilot changed speeds on the two-speed superchargers - or were they turbos? Simpler and more elegant times...

I respect Australia so much for flying these old aircraft and keeping their memory alive. Here in the UK it is SHAMEFUL that they let very few 'old' aircraft fly - preferring to BAN THEM from being flown at all - such as the Lightning, Canberra, Phantom etc. These are all airworthy aircraft, probably in better condition than when new, due to the immense care and diligence taken to keep them perfect - they will NEVER see the sky again - thats why we are getting out of this place! In the RAF I worked on so many of these wonderful aircraft and it is a great loss to future generations that they will never see many classic aircrft airborne ever again! 🤬🤬🤬😪

A stunningly beautiful aircraft, one of my earliest memories was an abandoned example at Malta's Luca airport that was later converted to a restaurant/ bar. Eventually abandoned again and destroyed by vandals. Hats off to all those who put in so much hard work to keep her airworthy and the few surviving aircrew that can still fly these legends. I did see the Breitling Constellation take to the air during the Duxford flying legends airshow some years ago but I believe that and the Dutch Connie are grounded for now. is this the only one flying now?

i was a&e on Navy version of the Connie in late 60's. It is by far the most beautiful large passenger plane ever made. My most exciting day was being able to taxi one on the taxiway and runway. Wow. Cheers.

Also flew with Navy, mid 60s out of Kefilck, Iceland. Have photos out window of volcano eruption, Sursey I think. Mechanic and part-time crew member VW-13. Can still visualize the wings flapping and the flames coming out of PRT's during night flight's

@@joepacheco4038 I am the biggest Connie fan. Todays planes are just ugly -- no styling at all.

Uuuh, great bird. Must be one of the very last. I read about the last swiss Super Connie now retired from flying display as they could not afford servicing the wing structure to keep it airworthy.

Flew from Johannesburg South Africa to Luxembourg as a 10 year old in 1965. Three stops: Luanda (Angola), Cape Verde Islands (overnight stop), Lisbon Portugal (overnight stop), and through on day three to Luxembourg. Return was Luxembourg to Mallorca (overnight), refuel in Nairobi (Kenya), then through to Johannesburg.

Was that flight aboard a Trek Airways, Lockheed 1649 Starliner (the final version in the Constellation series)?
@hansmoller6408
@hansmoller6408 6 месяцев назад
@@WAL_DC-6B Yes. Trek Airways to Europe, Luxair on the way back. Luxair could fly over Africa, Trek Airways could not. Not sure about the Constellation number. (I was 10 years old).

WoW❤️‍🔥👍 For me, the Lockheed Super Constellation - lovingly called Super Connie - is, next to the De Havilland DH.106 Comet, the most beautiful long-haul airliner from the fifties. Excellent shots of a real heartwarmer. Thank you.

I still remember my first commercial flight. My dad took me from Miami, FL to Washington, DC in an Eastern Airlines Constellation. We went from sunny Miami to a dreary rainy DC. Those were truly the "Queens of the Skies". Beautiful planes!

Oh Wow! This brings back childhood memories; I grew up only 11 miles from LGA, and under the right conditions one could hear a connie taking off. They frequently flew over our house; the sound of those engines was quite unique and I could identify one flying over without seeing the airplane. Thank you for the terrific video!

I believe this is the most beautiful plane ever made. Also, I also love propeller planes. They have the most beautiful sound. What a piece of engineering and history.
