Mangrove Pitta is a threatened species native to the eastern Indian Subcontinent and western Southeast Asia. A colourful bird with black head, brown crown, white throat, greenish upper parts, buff underparts and reddish vent. Found in mangrove and nipa palm forests where it feeds on crustaceans, mollusks and insects. Very shy and difficult to see, often sighted on high perch on a mangrove tree. Mostly quiet all times, but tends to be vocal while brooding. With the calls or the fast pace walk, the Pitta declares the presence. Highly active during mating and nest building season.
Mangrove pitta is a threatened species and native to the Indian Mangrove forests of Bhitarkanika National Park and Sunderbans.
Crabs are the favourite meal of Mangrove Pitta. The huge crab-smashing bill of this mangrove specialist is the highlight apart from the larger-headed appearance and Mangrove habitat. Like other pittas, you can listen for its throaty and fluid two-parted whistles. It is a threatened species due to habitat loss and human activities.
