Both songs finally in the right order (on the album it's the other way round). The most underrated songs in their back catalogue and probably one of the best difficult "second albums" in rock history. Don't know why it's so underrated.
i'll never understand why many people dislike it, october was the album that got me into u2 and remains my favourite album by them, and tomorrow is one of their best songs ever!
How raw is this? So brilliantly Irish sounding, and that voice of Bono's...epic. I love that U2 became so huge - they definately desrve all the success, but it's almost a shame this rawness was (inevitably) lost.
It takes me back to when I was a child. To my grandma's front yard/house. She lost it years ago. I still dream about it. Nothing else on this Earth gives me that feeling back.
I remember going to the werchter concert in 1982 and watching those young kids play. Didn't like it but in a year I was addicted to their music. A year later I was standing with a banner with the following text "U2 MAKE IT TODAY ,PLAY TOMORROW" and was reacting to those words. Sweet memories
Masterpieces both. They will stand the test of time even into 2050 & beyond. Just pure songs & tremendous composition from an era when the music business was still championing crap. These songs are still beautiful 30/40 yrs on
To be even more specific live versions like this featured tin whistle played by -believe or not- Edge. This guy ij just a genius. Supermultiinstrumentalist.
I'm agree. The best U2, in my opinion, are those of "Under a blood red sky", as the perfect synthesis on stage of the young angry from the first three album, and "Achtung baby" for his sense of decadence. After the '91 just few songs are savable.
i wish too this is one off my fav tracks by u2..my daughter started singing this when she was 4 ...not only is this great it is fantastic one off there best..''off there early stuff and speaking off bagpipes....yes it would be because i'm scottish...it would go down go down well.
It's so good to revist this beautiful music. October got overshadowed by the later material, but this is exceptional stuff by anyone's standards. I'm looking forward to the remastered release of this album.
Thanks so much for posting this...I thought I was the only one who appreciated these songs. They are brilliant...mystical...and I predict that U2 will one day do an album revisiting their Irish roots....jp
Tommarow was the song i had when times where tuff..Death,,no heat,,no food,,fighting,,,and waiting for something more..Today is much better..no pain and no tears..cbono69
In 1987 i got the bootleg of these concert it was almost a unique piece. 14 years later somebody post it on netflix. This is the only recorded live version of tomorrow. I'm still angry
@gg41r You are right, but that is also one of the many beauties of U2. They are always trying new styles of music. Its what keeps them fresh, but yeah their recent music doesn't even compare with their music from the 80s and 90s.
@EdgeCrush10 Just checked my cd and my old album (yes, album!), and no answer. Edge plays guitar and keyboard, so it makes sense that he plays other instruments. I'll have to google it.
I'll check it out.....but I think this recording is from The Ritz, in New York, with Edge on the whistle. Vinny played at the SFX gigs in December '82.....and I've asked him if he has a recording - any recording! - of himself playing the pipes with the band. Wouldn't mind, but I've all his stuff with In Tua Nua.....and not one single recording with U2!
It's not the gig at the Ritz in New York (March 18, 1982), as "I Will Follow" followed "Tomorrow", whereas on this recording, "Two Hearts Beat As One" follows......which suggests it's the War Tour. From my recollection of that pre-War Tour, when Vinny (and Steve Wickham) played with U2, there was only three songs from the soon to be released album that they played on that tour......"Sunday Bloody Sunday", "New Years Day", and "Surrender".
I believe the song Tomorrow is aboot the death of Bonos mother. Thats why it does not get played live. Class record October. One of U2's most under rated.
To me, it sounds like Edge is playing a pennywhistle, not a flute, to imitate the uillean pipes from the album track. He squeaks it a few times, but still not bad for a guitar player. :) His approach to the whistle part is a bit more choppy than I expected. The UPipes on the album are very legato, like an Irish Aire, as pipes almost always tend to be.
@MattClay Well said! But, without the change, some of us do not like, kids in 1990s would not know who they are, let along today. For the rest of us we have very early 1980s and four guys who got on stage fresh from high school and with some of the greatest lyrics ever and everlasting melodies...
Anyone know which show this is from? I know the title references 1982 but I sense it might be from European Leg 1 of the "War" tour 1983. At the end of the audio clip, Bono references "Two Hearts..." which wasn't played prior to 1983.
I like to think the "shhing" I hear someone say at 1:28 is a fan stoked s/he will hear October live. His angst/range is amazing. Where might I find this rest of this ,if you know the answer even though it might be 2 years from this posting, let me know pls
I found it on an old home burned CD, where it was labeled as 'after the fire, before the flood, songs of faith and devotion'. I don't know if that's the official title though, and where the concert took place, but it does seem to have all the songs in the correct order. I could try to find the tracklist if anyone cared
