Hey gang! A question you might have after watching this is "why" didn't these get released! I'm told it was an issue of rights, but I'm not 100% on the full story there. Kong's rights have always been a complicated mess but in theory, releasing Kong toys that don't reference the films (and only the books) SHOULD be public domain. However, the film-right owners have a history of being litigious anyways and scaring people off who try to exercise their public domain rights. That could've been the case here. @Regular Guy They technically didn't. I myself have almost little to no clue about it, but from what I can gather, it was either bought out by or soon renamed to Jakk's Pacific. Which is kind of coincidental, because Jakk's is also making Godzilla toys, so technically Trendmasters is still doing what it does best...

Jakks got their assets but Trendmasters died (long after this kong line was made). The CEO went on to create zhu zhu pets which was his biggest success ever, so he did ok :P

I wish they at least had a planned Ultraman Figure Wave. Sure nobody would know Ultraman but the dreamworks Ultraman towards the future figures, and trendmasters made a Gamera one. Which is suprising giving the fact that Gamera was more obscure than Ultraman by far. I guess it’s just too good to be true for it to exist.

March 2 will be King Kong's 90th birthday, very clever MIB. Also, the Trendmasters King Kong line would've been awesome, especially if it included dinosaurs.

It’s so fascinating learning about trendmasters potential and released products. I live in St.Louis Missouri (where their HQ was) and it’s still remarkably hard to find these out in the wild. I love these little dives into trendmasters lore.

The fact a toy line that was made had a variant figure based on a toy line that never was is just the most interesting wrinkle here. I could imagine if they released both the King Kong and Tarzan lines, Kerchek would have been considered the cheap repaint of Kong, especially if they were side by side in the toy aisle. You got to wonder if the retailers were the ones that somehow thought a King Kong line would be unprofitable while Tarzan got the green light. Then again, Disney did have that Tarzan animated movie coming out around that time.

It would’ve been nice to see dinosaurs of all shapes and sizes in relation to the scale of Kong. Imagine a T-Rex that scaled to the size of the 11-inch figure, and had jaw-tearing action or something of the like.

After watching this video I just want to say that I have the figure and am happy to have bought it at the swap meet , Kerchak or Kong looks more like a Kong to me when I got it, and definitely a great tredmasters collection next to Godzilla and Gamera

As mainly a Kong nerd, I'm not sure WHAT I think of these 😆 That they literally just scaled the same mold over and over again, and used it for Tarzan, is pretty hilarious. I feel like I SHOULD have one for my collection, but I'm not exactly chomping at the bit for it 😝

That Kong prototype looks pretty cool, shame they never released it. It's also interesting that they wanted to make a toy line with just Kong, you think they would've included some enemies for Kong, like some dinosaurs or other Skull Island creatures.

I like to think an expanded Kong line by trendmasters would have explored skull island fauna. I can see them reusing the doom island dinosaurs under different names with new paint jobs for starters and then getting into some really weird and wild skull island critters along with some different kong variants.

They made a Kumonga figure prototype at point for Godzilla, so I could see the Kumonga figure repainted to be a generic Skull island spider. Rodan could have been retooled to be a pterodactyl for Skull island.

@@Darthzilla99 yeah, kumonga is generic enough that a minor retool would be perfectly suitable for the kong line. rodan is a bit of a stretch but maybe with a new head they could have gotten away with it. I can even see alot of the other tarzan toys, the lions and tigers atleast, making an appearance aswell. imagine how cool a trendmasters robo kong could have been.

These almost remind me of Peter Jackson's King Kong toy line from my childhood but the difference was that the Kong action figure would be released with multiple monsters to fight such as the V Rex and the canceled monster, Piranhadon. 🦍🦖

It's kind of a coincidence that in the 1990's Jackson was beginning to propose a Kong film. That didn't happen until he did a full-on remake decade later, but I always thought that maybe these were planned as a cash-in (not actual merchandise) for it and were just not released because the film was never made.

After watching this video, I was thinking that I actually had one of the King Kong figures but I did some looking and turns out it was a Tarzan figure, it's a gorilla that has a red button on its chest and red eyes that don't glow. From looking a little bit I see that there's two sets I have the same model as the one I have one that comes with like this golden thing and a little bit of accessories and another one that comes with like this I believe a stick and a green snake

I really love the design for these trendmaster King Kong toys. They look terrifying and the concept where he roars just by touching is unique. Such a shame it never got a release due to the kong toys looks the same.

The conclusion that I have come to with many of these Godzilla figures is that some of the best figures are those that never got released. Unreleased or underrated Godzilla figures are absolutely golden.

Yeah Kong's rights are a mess. To quote Art Adams when he was trying to get some King Kong projects off the ground back in the 1990s with Dark Horse "Well we talked about that. The rights were a horrible mess. Dark Horse couldn't find a way to do it. Someone held rights for the music, someone for the movie, someone for the story, and were ready to sue each other whenever anyone wanted to do anything with it."

I, without a doubt, had a toy JUST like this in the late 90's early 2000's. It was a 11 or 12 inch, jet black kong with red light up eyes and shackles on it's wrist. Anyone else here have one and remember who it was produced by???? I've been looking for one for years

I think this perfectly shows the double-edged sword of King Kong merchandise. On the one hand, Kong is one of (if not the) most iconic giant monsters of all time. It would make sense to want to get the rights to release toys of the giant ape. However, that's the problem with Kong. He's a giant ape. With some notable exceptions (IE: Toho's versions and the Monsterverse incarnation), his design is pretty generic. Don't get me wrong, it's a great monster design. But, when it comes to merchandising, it's so easily interchangeable with any other toy gorilla. Heck, all Trendmasters had to do was make a few alterations and Kong became Kerchak.

Trendmasters peaked with their Godzilla and Gamera lines, the only thing after those they had going for them was Rumble Robots. After that, nothing. Though I think it's coming time to give a nod to the stars of your channel by covering some Bandai soft vinyl lines.

Really all i would say this line would have needed was some dinosaurs, either they could have Gone classic Trendmasters and reused some of the Doom Island Dinosaurs, or made some new bigger ones like a plesiosaur, a giant Pteranodon, a giant Triceratops or a non-specific meat eater, or maybe even some other prehistoric Beasts like A Mammoth, a Wolly Rhino or something to that effect, any of those would have been Great to be perfectly honest, Quick side note MIB do you think you'll also cover the Gamera figures at some point in the future?

I could have seen Kong micro battle play sets. The new york set could have been used for Kong and have airplanes to represent original Kong or (it had the twin towers) helicopters to represent 76 Kong.

@@thenedain Unfortunately you are a little late, as I sold off my 6" RESIN Hardcopy Proto of Tars Tarkas and then over the past 6 months sold of the Unproduced 13.5" Tars Proto as well. Had them both listed in my TRENDMASTERS Prototypes Toys (Redux) Group first.
