Amazing. When he passed away, j was a 1 year child in bangalore. My parents would always tune to some sangeetham station on AIR. So, from a very young age, music had been falling on my ears: my sisters also used to sing. At a very young age, I heard GNBs baalagopaala on the radio. That was it. It had had its impact which started untaveling , a bit later. I would listen to anything from GNB. I started playing the flute a little bit every now and then; I also started singing like him. By over a decade or more, I had started singing like him - not formally trained, i was more into aalaapana. Much later, i could sing swaaminaatha, sundarathatadeham, brocheva, saanajavarahsmana, nifhichaala sukhama, etc. For just my inner plessure. I picked up some on a flute which had bought fof 40 rupees, many in GNB style. But hindola and thodi on the flute were found to be nearly impossible, although i could do z decent aalaapana vocally. ALL BECAUSE OF GNB. I was so obsessed, that i hardly found any interest even in people like KVN! The story is different now: listen yo KVN, DKJ, of course MLV, etc. I was so fond of GNB, that, when, during masters, i found his less known disciple Ramakrishna Bhagavathar in malleshwam - he had recovered from stroke, and became his disciple. But he passed away in a few months... I could repeat many of hud brigaas to an extent and get thrilled, but not even close to his - as in yochsnaa, or many others. During my late years, i have given small concerts in temple, with my daughter accompanying me pon the violin and some good guys on the mridangam. Had never thought of such possibilites during ealrier but the urge to sing like him was very deep! Gods grace and my maanasika guru in my mind, the one and only ond GNB. The contribution ftom MSG and lalgudi are no less; the soft following of music on the mridangam by palani, cannot be forgotten...
Oh wow... I initially thought this could be an AI driven effort!!! I have had the great fortune of hearing GNB Mama live in Palakkad Music Academy accompanied by Lalgudi mama and Mani mama. I must have been around 3 years then, back in 1964, a few months before this icon passed on to heaven. I was too young to appreciate him, or for that matter any of the other greats who blessed this venue like Madurai Mani Iyer, Radha Jayalakshmi, Semmangui Iyer mama, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, K. V. Narayanaswamy Awargal, DK Pattamal Mami etc.
This is a sight that I have wished for for over forty years. My God, it made me get goose bumps to finally SEE him sing. Wow! What a magnificent presence. What majesty! The visual is every bit as breathtaking as the sound!!
His hands appear like they are specially designed for playing mridangam. Highly agile and his aesthetics are purest. You know better sir. 🙏🏼🙏🏼 I can feel the gauravam on stage when he s present. Everyone is at ease while being on stage delivering Sangeetham whole heartedly. sadly I was born later. Missed all these things.
Spectacular and incomparable!! His brighaas and multiple sangatis are what has made him a legendary genius whose musical knowledge and singing style can never be heard in the centuries to come. Of course his greatest disciple the legendary MLV did come very close to him as did S Kalyanaraman and V Ramachandran. There was another disciple : T R Balu, who unfortunately died young. Of course one cannot forget the names of the underestimated and unrecognized and equally unsung duo- Radha and Jayalakshmi whom we unfortunately ignored . So much about the Great GNB school of music which still the connoisseurs of music still fondly remember.
I am a common man. I myself feel like seeing a man of century in mridangam. You must be having divinely feel. My humble wishes and bows to you sir. 🙏🏼🙏🏼 As you said in an interview, he is unique genius and is un comparable with anyone in playing mridangam.
The speed of G N B, his brigha laden sangathis, Pazhani's Mridangam tonal quality, crips strokes and their tacit understanding to adjust whenever required....what a team!!!!. and the thrill they produce...
My goodness! He should be called Brigha-deeshwara! I know, cheesy, but it’s unbelievable how he does it and make it sound so effortless! This clip is so freakin hypnotic, addictive sort of, I kept coming back to it! Then I heard Sanjay Subramanian also talk about it and I came back to it again. I’ve never heard anyone singing like this. It seems hard even for great singers to sing this way.
@@worldmusicatlas4664it's not cheap American slang it's simple English that everyone uses to communicate and its not disrespectful but it's a way of appreciating and admiring the singer. Don't be so sensitive.
We have seen him & enjoyed his music concert st Ganesh chaturthi day at kollam dt Kerala temple. He was principal of music College at trivandrum then.may be in 1965,i think .l was 14yrs old then.
Aha....Using this clip as a training sample, We can try to use AI to regenerate the entire concert. Otherwise, money can be given to the person who has this treasure (either full video or at least this song)
Thank you for sharing this video. Sri GNB's brighas are a class apart and inimitable. This video is a testimony that he wasn't 'trying' to sing his brighas. It was natural for him and a great gift from above only for him. Any replication of his brighas would be unnatural, for it is not something achievable by human effort alone. At the most, one can gain inspiration from him to know that such gifted and blessed souls existed among us, and that one should always be true to one's individuality.
We can watch this priceless clip any no. of times. Such a lively dias! Imposing presence .. what to say about the rendition..Longing to see the full clipping if available.. And any other feeds... Very grateful for this rare upload! ❤
I wish i had the privilege to listen and watch him. At 30 yrs of age now ... looking back at the few concerts i attended of the legends i now realise what a blessing it was to attend and listen to them live. Its a vibrant experience and has a huge influence.
A wonderful experience to experience the master live.. longing for more such videos of GNB, Madurai Mani Iyer, Musiri, MDR, Mali, TN Rajarathinam Pillai, MM Dhandabhani Desikar...
