Following on from my previous film 'Rare Supermarine Walrus to Fly Again'
which was very well received and many asked to see the recovery of a Walrus back aboard ship. Also the Walrus that continued flying in Australia into the mid 1960's.
In the film we take a closer look at the recovery procedures to land a Walrus next to its mother ship while at sea and crane it back aboard. The Walrus that ended up in Antarctica, which was recovered in the 1980's and restored to display in the Point Cook Museum Australia.
Some rare footage of the Supermarine Sea Otter also features.
Also detailed the very popular Airfix model which was made by many modellers over the years.
Supermarine also developed the Supermarine Sea Otter which features as a 1/6 th radio controlled model with a three cylinder piston radial engine.
Thanks to Noel Hunt for constructing this lovely aircraft.

One just HAS to wonder if any "hooker-on" despite the safety belt ever accidentally slipped back into the propeller?

I guess there would have been a variety of accidents with the volume of flying going on. Please have a subscribe. Chris.

Two great videos on the Supermarine Walrus. The Airfix models look very good and the RC Sea Otter is terrific. I will have to dig out my Profile Publication on the Walrus to re-read. Thanks for the posting.

When I was about 7 I had a couple of flights in Seagulls off Portsea front beach. Quite an experience. I was aircraft obsessed from an early age and got my flying licence on my 18th birthday at Moorrabbin Airport with the aero club there after training on Tigers and Chipmunks. I also flew in Beech 17's, DH Dragon and Ryan STA's.

Hey! That was great & I have a surprise for you - I took that photo of the Walrus at Coffs Harbour 60 years ago this year! (Hockey Treloar's Walrus VH-ALB -1963) I came from Coffs Harbour & was a Flying Instructor there at the time. (If we can somehow get in contact I have three other photos from the same day)

As a kid I saw the RAF Hendon museum Walrus regularly flying in MACKAY Queensland because my Dad was fascinated by it. His brother had worked on Catalinas and Walruses for the RAAF during WW2. Dad took moving pictures of the Walrus and it eventually ended up in the RAF Hendon museum. In 2016 I travelled with my wife to Hendon to see it but it was in an exhibition that bloody well closed the day before. Unfortunately the staff were unwilling to allow me to see it which I though was a bit slack. Nevertheless I too had made the Airfix model as a kid. I still think it looks like a very beautiful aircraft.

...Climbs on the top wing, just in front of a turning 600 hp meat grinder (5:06). Doing that on a wavy sea, every flight, high above the cg of the aircraft... It seams that people didnt care for there life in those years?

Had a safety strap that stopped that person from falling back into the propeller. Was visible at one stage. The crew are very much concerned. After all; if the first one fell. Then someone else would have to do the job.

The Seagull 5 was the original design that was adapted to become the Walrus. They were different models, with minor changes. Perhaps instead of Walrus it should be regarded as the Seagull 6. From my memory these were aircraft that were allowed to do outside loops. This is a 60+ year old memory, so not reliable. Someone might know. The odd thing is that are no Seagull 5 in Australia (the only operator), but one is sitting Hendon.

Great videos, and thanks for documenting lesser known aircraft! Walrus is a curious and likable aircraft, I think I once built the Matchbox model of it a century ago. ;^) In the virtual realm, the game "War Thunder" has a playable Walrus, found as ship-launched unit on the HMS York (a simple internet search will reveal it). There may also be models for other simulators. Look forward for status updates on the Duxford restoration! - Joe

The Walrus from Airfix was my first foreign-made model. For a long time it was the pride of my exposition with models. It's a very nice plane. It fell once and now it's sitting in pieces in a box somewhere deep waiting for more time to devote to my hobby. I greet all modellers who built the Walrus, and I encourage those who didn't build them, because it's a nice plane with an interesting history.

Is there a reason for the two propeller halves being out of line? This seems to be a feature of the actual aircraft as well. I would have thought this would slightly reduce the efficiency of the second, more rearward, pair of blades?

@@GULLPERCHFLYER Question of stacking two 2-bladed propellers, it is easier to do than gluing together 4 blades to a single hub, and possibly have longer lifespan. Very common arrangement.
