Thanks for all the kind words John, but if I knew the hammer was that cool I would have kept it ,lol. But I know I sent it to the right home.Happy Holidays John and to everyone on the channel.
Hello Lou! Again- Thanks so much! You and I are two peas in a pod, maybe one day we can meet up at a steam or tractor show!!!! =) Thanks again Lou!!!!!!
Always fun! What a beautiful hammer! You know, I could never justify spending that kind of money on a hammer, but it points out one reason I like restoring old tools. You have a wrench, screwdriver, vise, hammer etc. that's top notch for pennies on the dollar! But would love to have one of these hammer so I could just pick it up and hold it occasionally! LOL! Thanks, keep em coming!
Hello Lloyd! The funny thing is I remember buying my first $80 hammer, it was a Stiletto Titanium... I was amazed at how great that hammer is... so the sting of the extra money cost went away and I bought another in a different size... That's how it starts! The first time you spend a lot it hurts but gets easier over time! LOL Thanks Lloyd!!!!!!!
What a beautiful and practical nail hammer!! I love it. I have a couple of Hart hammers, and I love them. One is a straight claw 12 oz. and the other is a 22 oz. waffle head straight claw framing hammer . They were expensive back in the late 90s when I bought them from Home Depot. Nobody does tool restoration like you. Unbelievable talent. I have a vintage Stanley bell faced no. 12 curved claw that I got as a gift. I have to clean it and maybe replace the handle. Thanks a lot.
Zip wrench is really cool but I use my eastwing all the time and would love to own that hammer! Never gave that claw in the centre of the hammer a thought until you have the demo! Excellent hammer!
Howdy, My late Brother was a builder, he had a woody, he loved it. The Zip wrench, I remember seeing them on TV, don't have one...but now, I must have one, For your protection, I will not tell my wife I saw it hear. Be well, stay safe, May all your journeys be on the sunny side of the road.
Hello Joel! The framers and builders loved those Woody hammers! They were well received even though they were expensive! It's cool that your Brother had one! I never saw the Zipwrench commercial and tried looking it up! LOL Billy was Loud and funny! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Those old Harbor Freight catalogs bring back some memories. I mailed-ordered from them for years and they would always thrown in a free gift. I still have some of the plastic funnel and drill index sets they'd include. I always thought it was neat when people were mentioning that they were opening actual retail stores. Now they're everywhere. Thanks for sharing that, Scout!
Hello Tony! You are so right! I always say it- I might not have the biggest channel but I have without a doubt the best subscribers on RU-vid! Thanks Tony!
ScoutCrafter, I hate to say it but if Lou didn't know what it was when he sent it to you , the right thing to do might be to offer it back. That particular hammer is very hard to find and very desirable. I''ve seen them go for hundreds of dollars in nowhere near the kind of condition of the hammer Lou sent you. That hammer is pristine. I'm sorry for saying something that might put you in a bad spot with Lou. I just feel bad for Lou. But maybe you guys have a real close relationship. If so... you just got EXTREMELY lucky and Lou is a VERY generous
That wrench is crazy! SCOUT CRAFTER you could take Billy Mays place and sell these wrenches on TV - LOL Thanks to John and Lou for sending the catalogs and the wrench so we all get to see them!
Hello Dennis! They were so mice to do that! You're right! I was having a lot of fun fooling with that wrench! LOL I just get a kick from gimmick tools! =) Thanks Dennis!!!
That is another beautiful hammer. Been busy here have been working on a rigid pipe wrench and a cobblers hammer. LOL not as much time to spare around Christmas. Hope you have a great Christmas and Santa drop's a batch of goodies off at your house.
Hello Michael! I always hated this time of year when I reached adulthood... Too much rushing around and the stores are crazy! I prefer mid January! LOL Thanks so much!!!!!
I have 2 Hart California framers, bought new in 1999 at Woodworkers Warehouse IIRC, a milled face, and a smooth face decker. I think I paid about $25- each. Luv em!
Hello Jack!!!!! 79! You know that if we were at an event I would be the guy asking you about all the great things you have seen and done! The biggest problem with the youth of today is they don't realize the wealth of knowledge sitting under all that Silver hair! I certainly do and always tap into that knowledge base! Thanks Jack!!!!!!!!!
Hi Jill, Billy was always shouting on his commercials... The guy was tremendously popular... He passed away in 2009, the good thing is he died in his sleep... =) Thanks Jill!!!!!!
I enjoyed this video very much. What a cool hammer, first time I've seen that style so the history was interesting. I remember that zip wrench too. Ol' Billy was around a lot in my days of watching TV. I don't do that much anymore. :)
The hammer reminds me alot if my Douglas. The wrench reminds me alot of my Nonnie (grandma) whose entire tool box was gimmick tools. Ha! Thanks for the laugh!
Hello Christina! Yes! Your are right it is a Douglas design that was licensed to Hart... Now Vaughn I think is producing some.. Pretty cool! I too enjoy gimmick tools! =) Thanks Christina!!!!!!!
Well I sure am glad I tuned in for this one. A superb hammer and perhaps not useful but novel wrench. And wow, that subscriber count! Growing like a weed over there scoutcrafter. Well deserved. I've got some cool new to(ys)ols that might hit the channel someday. They're a bit larger than these though. One is about 800lbs, and the other 100. :) Enjoyed as always.
Hello, the builder from South Alabama again, this is the EXACT Woody hammer I had, but it had Douglas on it if I remember correctly. The square milled face is what I remember being so unique. Loved this hammer!! Wish I could find an original. If you could point me in the right direction for hammer related Face Book groups, or where hammer enthusiast connect on the web, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
What an awesome framing hammer. They went above and beyond with that design. Almost like the hammer was designed by a framer. Not at all like today where they design it to ‘look cool’ instead of ‘work’ better.
@@ScoutCrafter I love practical & lasting tools. In my country we don't find good ones. Last a couple years only. After Gedore shut down we don't hv quality tools in market.
A Good tool video. Both quite the tools. But that Zip wrench may be a gimmick, but for folks with arthritic fingers or hands, that battery powered wrench is a blessing. Cheers my Friend ! Merry Christmas !
Hi Kathie! Yes! I too was astonished by the speed of the action! And it didn't bind up or bog down! =) Fun to play with for sure! Thanks very much!!!!!!
GREAT Video! FANTASTIC Hammer! Interesting Wrench!! I get a kick out of the old ads too!! If you dont put up another one before Tuesday...Have a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!! If you do, I'll say MERRY CHRISTMAS Again then! LOL!
Coincidentally I just restored a Zip model builders plane. Not sure what I will use it for but it will be nice for very fine work. Nice work mate. I always enjoy your content.
Hello TAD~ Plane restoration has become very popular and very satisfying! Years ago you could pick up a really good plane for $5! Now people are looking more closely... They do clean up very nicely thanks to all the extra metal that went into making them... Thanks very much!
@@ScoutCrafter I must admit that I am on a hand plane restoration kick at moment. Six hand planes in six weeks. Not sure what I will do with them all but that is beside the point. I hope you've passed that bastard stone by the way. Take care.
Wow, only 69 I've got him by a year. I remember those Douglas hammers and were way out of my price range back then. I sure do like the ZipWrench though. Happy holidays to you and yours!
Hello George! It's amazing how some hammers have really gone up in price! The Douglas will be back after the new year but I suspect a $200 price range! =) Yikes! LOL Thanks George!!!!!!!
Hey ScoutCrafter! That Woody is a beautiful hammer!! Wish they still made those. Very nice of Lou to send that to you!! That zip wrench action is cool. Definitely a gimmick! I remember using those old HF catalogs. A buddy of mine used to sift out the deals when the same product had a different code with a better price. I ordered a lot of stuff online, but now the store has ruined me. Lol!! I'd like to say financially but the stuff is so cheap.
Hi Steve! Dalluge make a titanium version! Great hammer! You're right! Years back you would have a few catalogs so you could pick the lowest price from each catalog! LOL Good times! Thanks Steve!
You Crafty Scout, you. I've used Estwings sidewinding like the Woody and that is a hammer that ought to be on exhibit on a wall in a box somewhere. I have seen an Estwing handle broken like that too. If you saw the bull that did it you'd know why also. You must've PASSED the test because you're getting the old spunk back Welo done, Sire and GBWYall!
Hello Lewie! Yes, with the right blow and conditions I saw hammers and axes snap like toothpicks! I never stand near or in front of people swinging anything! LOL That's why we are still around! LOL Thanks Lewie!
Hi Cindi! Funny story about that cat! I rescued it as a orphaned Kitten from a pit at the bus depot... I was talking to a friend and said "I'm trying to figure out a good name for her" and he said "How about Kenji- it's Japanese for Lucky" I said "Wow! That's perfect!" and named her Kenji... 8 years later I find out Kenji means "Strong second son" in Japanese... =/ Needless to say I haven't told Kenji... =)
Hello Brian! I would like to see the operation but was leery that I would have difficulty in reassembling it if things got a little crazy... That's a job for BigClive! =) Thanks Brian!!!!!!!
@@drstrangefart LOL - I didn't even think of that my EDC knife is a Ken Onion Kershaw knife and I continually open and close it. It started out so I could break it in but now it's just something I do.
The Squeezer lol Ok that is an awesome name. Not sure if its just me but ScoutCrafter in a Santa outfit operating the Dake. Might be all I want for Christmas morning lmao.
Hi Bernie! Dalluge makes the identical hammer in titanium! A sweet model! Not too expensive either. The new Douglas hammers I think will be pricy! =) Thanks Bernie!
Hello Dave! LOL Funny story! I was working at the bus company and we drove the busses thru a washhouse to wash them every night... There was a big long PIT we had to drive over before going into the wash... One day I thought I saw a big Rat in the pit! On closer inspection I saw it was a kitten! My buddy and I climbed into the pit and captured the little kitten who was small enough to put in my pocket! The mother was nowhere in sight so at lunchtime I brought her home where she thinks she is in charge... She might be right... Thanks!!!!!!!!
Hey Scout, Merry Christmas mate and I hope Santa is kind to you and you family. I got the bloke to reduce his price on the double screw “G” clamp and it just arrived. I didn’t realise how heavy and well made they are. After I it get cleaned up I will add it to my collection of odd ball tools. Speaking of which I have a vice I could use some help in identifying if your able to. It clamps to a table and pivots but I have never seen one quite like this before as it’s all cast iron and the shafts are beautifully machined and while it has a ball pivot it also has another clamp so it can go around 360 deg and has another clamp so the height can be adjusted. It has a patent number but no makers identification marks. I would find it hard to believe it was made in China but who knows? Thanks Stuart 🇦🇺
Hello Stuart! Congratulations on getting that clamp! I am so glad you are happy with the quality! They were just beautiful clamps! Anytime you have a query feel free to send me a pic! bicycleguy@aol.com
ScoutCrafter Thanks Scout that’s so kind of you. I will send some pics of the vice after Xmas as we leave for Melbourne tomorrow to spend time with the kids and grandkids. We are in Canberra so it’s a seven hour drive each way but well worth it. Hope you have family to spend Xmas with. Thanks Stuart 🇦🇺
The zip wrench is a funny little thing. Once we had a battery powered tape measure, it retracted and lengthened by pressing a switch, it was way, way too bulky and heavy for everyday use, so it only got used to see who could stealthily extend the tape up high enough to try and knock flys off the workshop ceiling lol.
Never thought I would use beautiful and hammer in the same sentence but that is how I would describe that hammer. As far as the zip wrench It reminds me of a kids toy back in the 80's. It probably would last as long too. I can't imagine taking that to work and trying to free up a rusted bolt. It would probably shatter in a million pieces.
Nothing like pot metal and plastic for making a strong wrench. Although when I see the the jaws opening and closing, it reminds me of some people's mouth.
Hello 57W- Like Charlie McCarthy! LOL I remember how Pot metal was always a problem when I was restoring cars... The Mirrors, nameplates and some moldings would always pit! Then if they broke, welding was out of the question! Potmetal crap! LOL Thanks!!!!!!!!
@@ScoutCrafter About the only thing you can do is make a mold and recast the padt. It wasn't only the poor quality metals used but the fast cooling water bath left air bubbles that weaken the piece. You still get things that are cast poorly. Short cuts make for cheaper production cost but boy the customer really pays for it.
@@ScoutCrafter Not yet. I think my first big museum with everything was back in 1975 we stopped at the Pioneer Village Museum in Minden Nebraska. 8th graduation trip west to Colorado although we went as far as the Salt Lake. We wanted to see the salt flats race area. Of course then Dragon wasn't open. I picked up a motorcycle in Denver in 03 but it wasn't on my radar. Of course I would like to catch the Cody museum and the three NRA museums. The machining and mechanics that went into designs is my main interest in going. If I had the time and funds I would visit every historic museum in this country.
I have a Black & Decker auto wrench, which is pretty much exactly the same. Got it as a gift, never used it but it's a lot of fun just pushing the switch and watching the jaws.
Hello Emerson! Yes! A few companies made this design and now Kobalt makes a very similar wrench that is mechanical and doesn't need batteries! I play with it every time I go to Lowes! Thanks!!!!!!!!
Interesting hammer,I liked the side nail puller, and the overstrike protection, but can you get replacement wooden handles for such hammers.? Those three rivets or screws look like weak spots where the handle could fail..consider wood drying out, vibration from striking..That adjustable is a total "As seen on TV " gimmick..take tge batteries out and put them to use in a more practical appliance, put that toy into the loony section of your museum..Looking at that Harbor Freight catalogue, tge layout is very similar to our Super Cheap Auto ones..as are their stores layout and product range, guess they are copying Harbor Freight..regarding pricing in those catalogues, they are probably staying within a price range to suit their market..nice to see Kenji the wonder cat.
Hi Bob! The good news is Dalluge is making the same hammer in Titanium and replacement handles too... I agree that the three rivets might introduce a weakness. The Dalluge hammers have two rivets. These hammers were no gimmick as carpenters across the country bought them all up! Very hard to find an original Woody today. Yes the HF is just like your Super Cheap Auto... Amazing how the prices went down n 20 years! LOL Thanks Bob!!!!!!
There was a time when my father wanted one of the convertible ladders. The kind that can turn from an A frame to a straight ladder to a platform etc, and Harbor Freight has them for $125. I bought him one and he liked it. But I always kept an eye out after that in case I ever saw it for less, and I swear, 5 or 6 times a year they would have them on sale for...$125 They never went lower. I watched for years and they were always, always $125. It’s crazy
Hi Joe! Yes! I have a little giant ladder! It was a gift many years ago! I never used it! The funny part is they make it look super light on TV but the ladder is heavy! Bulky too! I'm too big to trust a folding ladder fully... A-frame ladders yes but I would never trust it as a platform to stand on! The ER is full of ladder people! LOL Thanks Joe!!!!!!!!
Hello Ricopolico! The music I get has to be copyright free or else RU-vid can take down the video! So all the music you hear is from RU-vid's copy-right free music library! They have a great selection! Thanks so much!
if i aint wrong i think black n Decker came out with their zip wrench first and they also had their own line of electric tapes that would spool out with a press of a button.
I have the Black and Decker version of the zip wrench, it makes a reasonable, rough gauge, micrometer. Not sure I would use it as a wrench unless it was absolutely the only option though.
Back in1998 Harbor Freight had retail stores here in So Cal, I actually worked at the 10000 Magnolia store in Riverside, I was 19 going on 20 when I got that job I think it was August of 1998. Back then almost everything was in a white box with only a SkU # to tell you what it was,. After almost 4 years of working there I think I had 1/2 that stores inventory memorized, the entire hydraulic section, air tools, and blue tarps I think I probably still know the old part numbers to ironically I would guess that most of the SKU numbers have been phased out. It was a smallish company back then and it didn't have coupons but it had an "insiders club" where you would fill out a questionnaire and you would get mailing flyers and stuff. If I remember right the goal was to open one do store a month. I remember volunteering to open at least six or seven different stores here in Southern California, until they got to far away that $4.35 wasn't worth driving for. That job was fun and for retail it was a good company to work for minus the absolutely terrible pay (like all retail). Back then my garage was a sea of Orange shop tools, my floor jacks were orange, my jack stands were orange my bottle jacks were orange, my engine hoist was orange and black, my engine stands were Orange lol I used to get a discount of 25% off of the lowest sale price and as a young kid just getting started buying tools I bought a lot of stuff from there they probably got half my check back. Some of that stuff I still have and use other stuff I have since replaced. Back then I could tell you what was quality and what wasn't in the store. I think the quality is about the same on most stuff today as it was back then other than last time I went down the hammer asle Isee they no longer sell hammers that have a loose head that were brand new, I remember I used to like the hammer section because they all look like retro 1940s and 50s hammers, hardwood handles nice-looking Hammerheads with green paint for an accent color... I bought a lot of the stuff and was disappointed with almost all of it,. Hand tools such as ratchets are definitely better quality now than they were then back then they looked like a snap on but fuel played any amount of torque to them the guts would fall out of the ratchet into your hand... As a young Tool Guy on majority of my tools came from Harbor Freight and what I wanted something good quality I would go over to Sears and buy USA Craftsman back then it was very rare that Craftsman sold junk tools but they were about double the price of Harbor Freight. Unfortunately everybody went to Harbor Freight instead of Sears it is probably part of the reason why Sears is going belly-up today, because they decided to buy stuff overseas and stick on the Crfaftsman label really tarnishing the brand name but still charging double the price. Thinking about it today I think I am still currently using the engine hoist, the jack stands, the bench vise, the bench top drill press (SK#548, it is an exact knock off of an old 1950s Delta) I still have the long frame Jack (6600) although it is since quit working and I really need to restore it talk about a handy tool a long frame to floor jack was it for pickups and SUV's, the bad thing is with Harbor Freight is they don't support most their tools from back then even though I have the parts list breakdown of the tools still. I even have one of their old display tables in my garage that are used as a workbench, they were going to throw it away it was made out of one by fours two by fours and four by fours with a three-quarter inch plywood top. Now I'm going to wake up and have nightmares of SKU numbers again Thanks for the fun trip down memory lane. Good times.
Hello Alexander! Wow! You were there when it was up and coming! You know the funny thing is with the China stuff it was always hit and miss... Some products were great and others were junk! Thus the bad reputation China has now... Taiwan on the other hand doesn't make junk and lots of HF's new inventory is from Taiwan! Thus the higher quality! Still there are lots of Chinese stuff lurking around but they even had to up their game to keep up! Great story! Thanks so much for sharing it!!!!!!!
That Hart Woody is very nice, I would like to find one of those but the chances of finding one here in the UK are slim as Harts were not sold here to my knowledge until the modern TTI owned incarnation. I haven't even seen one on Ebay. I do have the Titanium Dalluge version of the same design, as they are available here but expensive, a very good framing hammer it is too.
90 something bucks for a hammer! No wonder I never saw one like that, if I saw a price like that back then on a hammer I would not have taken a second glance!
It's like most tools. I have a friend that's a carpenter, and he wouldn't dream of owning a cheap one! When you make your living with a tool, quality counts!
@@g-palloyd3600 I agree but only up to a point. The last 15 years mechanic's tools have more than doubled but haven't changed much. I have a lot of Snap On stuff but at today's prices I KNOW I can find just as good much cheaper. I don't buy truck tools at all anymore.
Yea, dog, you're right, there is a happy medium. And, BTW, I would love to have top of the line on all my stuff, just sayin', being on fixed income, I can't afford top line, my carpenter friend can't afford not to! LOL! Thanks
Hi! ScoutCrafter, I got to say watching your Hammer Video, got me hooked on them now lol 😂 just purchase a craftsman hammer at Lowe’s , Merry Christmas to you and your family.
SC... The pricing is stable because back in 1998 Harbor Freight had quality tools not subpar tools. So now their prices reflect their quality. Not all their tools are less than quality but most are. I know you are bias to HF but everyone knows the facts. Back then 9 0f 10 were quality made with quality parts now 9 0f 10 you have to take a gamble. The other reason is back then 9 0f 10 were Life Time guaranteed now is buy at your own risk. Well that is my reasoning behind the prices being stable. Don't hold it against me. SC... Have a wonderful Christmas.
Hello Bison! I would never hold it against you! I agree HF used to sell close-outs and other Name brand stuff at a discount... I do like the company... Only because I like the way they run the stores and offer products that are hard to find elsewhere. I think if you have a good eye you can get some good deals there but if you don't know what to be leery of you might experience buyer's regret... Their roll-away tool boxes are awesome! =) Thanks!!!!!!!
SC...Yes, the roll-away tool boxes are fantastic. You don't need an $8,000 tool box to hold your tools with. These work great just as good as the S brand. And they come in colors too!!
Hello MrHeadBanger! Really! Wow! What a small world! He died in 2009 in his sleep and his family just had a second autopsy to prove it wasn't from drugs! RIP Billy! Thanks!!!!!!!
Hello John! I still didn't pass the stone! Or maybe I did and don't know it! Either way I decided to ignore it and the advise to do a follow up... LOL Thanks John!!!!
Wow they should still make that hammer. It is cool. I would buy one. I guess there is some place the wrench could be used. lol I bet it would eat up batteries. It is fast.
thats how we ordered stuff back in the day,out of a catalog and called in the order,i was hoping for a test of the gator grip socket!!! ziz zip,i am done
Hello Roger!! LOL Zip Zip, I am done! =D How many time I laughed my butt off at that moment! Even now it makes me smile! Poor youth of today... Not knowing true comedy! Thanks Roger!!!!!!!
What a funny wrench! I want to build my benchgrinder in to a bench polisher. But I'm not sure it is strong enough, it is 0,33 HP, what do you think about that?
Hi Alex! You know HP ratings can't be trusted.. They are often exaggerated. Now like Jusb mentioned if you find the torque of the motor isn't sufficient you can always run a smaller buffing wheel... It will work either way!
Hello Jeff! LOL You know what's funny is they have the deception down to a science! If you look at the wrench not looks like brushed steel! They are tricky!! LOL Thanks Jeff!
Hello Buck! Those Zip Sockets were like the Gator Sockets... They featured retractable rods that surrounded the fastener and were not well received! LOL Thanks Buck!!!!!!!!
