The Hood was a good ship, but it was older than the Bismark, and never modernized. It was always too busy in cruises to be modernized before the war began. People can think whatever they want just because someone thinks the shell entered the wave trough doesn't mean it did. Regardless of all the guessing what we do know is the Hoods armor deck plating was no where as thick as POW or Bismarck and that was a weakness, would thicker plating have changed the outcome of the battle? @walterkronkitesleftshoe6684
HMS Hood HAD to go into battle when she did. Hindsight is a luxury only WE have. Bismarck belt armour = 12.6 inches Hood belt armour = 12 inches (Though angled so as to give 13 inches of protection). Bismarck deck armour = 4 inches Hood deck armour = 3 inches Hood's vertical armour was well upto the standard of contemporary battleships, her weakest aspect was her horizontal deck armour, but Holland already knew that and had raced to close on Bismarck. Hood had escaped the "danger zone" of plunging fire, only to be then hit by a million to one shot that found an obscure "achilles heel" in her vertical armour.

@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684
@@spionsilver9626 It was nothing to do with "overconfidence". The simple unescapable fact is that Bismarck's & Prinz Eugen's sole aim was to steam into the British transatlantic convoy lanes and sink as much tonnage and cause as much disruption to the convoy schedules as possible. The two German ships were on the very threshold of those convoy lanes and the wider north Atlantic, where it would have been immeasurably harder to force them to engage. The British admiralty did what it HAD to do, WHEN it needed to be done and with what tools were then available. Prinz Eugen is where the recording came from. The ship you see firing nearby is Bismarck, the smoke on the horizon at the end is Hood's sinking

@Al.J_02
@Al.J_02 5 месяцев назад
@@jeffpotipco736 There is no evidence for the flash doors being opened in Hood. The practice was strictly forbidden and everyone in the Royal Navy knew exactly why. Even if it wasn't expressly prohibited, thousands of men dying horribly with only a handful of men surviving was probably discouraging enough. Hood had more than just one armoured Deck. IF the Shell were to fly at an angle to be able to penetrate the first deck, it would loose a significant amount of it's penetrative power and in all likelyhood be stopped by the second armour deck below (Hood had three). It would explode, if at all considering the quality of German shells during the Denmark Strait, far outside of the reach of the cordite stored in the magazines. Plus, the range that day was very close, so Prinz Eugen's shells would have had a flatter trajectory when fired off, similar to the Bismarck, meaning they would have skidded along the deck, deflected. The tighter the angle of the shell hitting the deck, the further the relative thickness of the armour increases, thus greatly increasing the chance of the shell deflecting.

So did Bismarck, it's irrelevant. Wooden decking had nothing to do with the ship's armour.

Respect to the german soldiers for their great job in hitting her were it was needed to sink her that fast. The Hood attacked the Bismarck and the Hood got what she deserved. Of course for the soldiers who served on both sites, life or death is very close together as experienced by the german soldiers shortly after this event. War does not determine who is right, only what is left.
