Monique was not talking down to the bonnet wearers. She actually delivered what is called wisdom. One of the great problems with our community is we don’t know how to hear and accept wisdom. I’ve been in the airport and young beautiful black sisters are in their pajamas with bonnets like they rolled out of bed and came to catch a flight. I’ll say it again for the people in the back, if you don’t respect yourself, no one else will. This piece of wisdom can be delivered simultaneously with all the other things going on in the world. At the end of the day, if a few people recognized the wisdom in what she was saying and stopped wearing bonnets in the public; it’s a win.

I don't think the brother knows what a bonnet is let alone, what Monique was trying to point out. As my late father use to say, their is a time and place for everything. Going on a airplane, cruise, concert hall, award show, even a sporting event was exclusive at one point and time. People who attend these events, dressed up and looked their finesse. It seems when it comes to our people, we don't give a dam anymore. The same outfit you wear to the club, you are wearing to church. The same outfit you wear to go to the supermarket, you are wearing to go to the airport. But yet we want the same respect as other races, who knows the difference between wearing the appropriate attire for the appropriate occasion. Wakeup people?

The bonnet debate is so easy but people feel like they should not be told what's appropriate. Ladies wear your bonnets but there's a time and place for them. Monique said she saw a female at the airport with a bonnet on. Now, it's that ladies right to wear what she wants and no one should tell her what to wear. We can do better regarding bonnets and tackle the other issues as well. It's not one or the other.

You can control your own personal image but you can’t control how others will view you. If you simply don’t care, then go ahead and do you. But a lot of people want to do whatever and have people be ok with it at the same time. When I was growing I was raised with the mentality of “ don’t make us look bad” with the “us” being the general black community. Obviously bad is subjective. I think we all contribute to our racial image, but once again if you don’t care then do you.
