Raspberries in the organic garden.
This plant, which can last from 10 to 20 years, is a great option to include in our organic garden or food forest and will give us a lot of exquisite and very healthy fruits.
It grows wild in various regions of Europe, although its cultivation is also quite widespread.
It is a vigorous shrub, with a semi-woody stem with thorns, which blooms and fruits during the second year of life. The part that has given dried fruit dies, but regrowth in the form of new stems that are born at the foot of the mother plant. From their rhizomes, shallow long roots arise, producing vertical stems that give rise to new seedlings. These shoots have a biannual cycle, as long as they remain attached to the mother plant. If we separate them from it, they will form a new perennial plant.
The red raspberry generally needs the use of supports or tutors, preferably trellises, since its stems are easily curved.
There are mainly two types:
Climbing: They give two staggered annual crops, in summer and autumn.
Non-tracing: They give a single annual harvest in summer, more abundant.
The most appropriate method of reproduction is the separation of their first year offspring, it can also be done by layering. It is not advisable to do it by means of seeds due to its low germination and for not presenting the new plant faithfully the characteristics of its parents.
The ideal time of cultivation is autumn, to favor the establishment in the soil of its root system.
It spreads very easily, forming leafy bushes.
It is quite resistant to winter frosts and high summer temperatures, although it is sensitive to low spring and frost temperatures that fall below -1ºC.
They require light and moderate watering. Its roots are very sensitive to moisture and drought.
It requires loose soils not compact and with good drainage. With neutral or slightly acidic PH. We will avoid planting in clay soils since it does not tolerate waterlogging.
A good contribution of organic matter will be necessary.
When the branches reach two years, they will wear white and small flowers, which will arise from the armpits of the leaves in small corsages.
Its fruit, the raspberry, is composed of numerous “drupes” globose, small and rounded, each containing a seed. These drupes are grouped together forming a conical receptacle.
The most common color is red or yellowish-orange, but there are varieties of white or black fruits.
The pulp is aromatic and sweet and sour, very pleasant. It can be consumed raw or used to make jams, jellies or drinks.
It is a fairly perishable fruit; we will keep it in the fridge for 2-3 days, although it admits very well the freezing.
Its fruits are very healthy.
They contribute mainly Potassium, Iron and Calcium. Stresses its content in vitamins B3, C and folic acid (Vitamin B9), an essential vitamin during pregnancy. It also provides Vitamin A, B1, B2, and B6.
They provide a significant amount of antioxidants, capable of neutralizing free radicals.
Raspberry is one of nature's most delicious and desired fruits, and it is also easy to grow, which makes it a very special addition to our organic garden.
