I appreciate your passion for Pi products. I have 4 of them myself and have enjoyed playing with them for 7 or 8 yrs too. But at this point it's really hard to justify. There are 1000s if not millions of used thin client PCs on Ebay and other auction sites with faster processors, capable of handling up to 16gb of ram, windows, linux etc near this price point for the Pi 5.. At $35 where it started, it was an amazing hobby. As you get over $100 by the time you get a power supply, heatsink, case, you're into the realm of some new low cost mini PCs that run circles around it.

Which is one of the reasons why I love this channel. He shares the same passion as I do and most of us that come to the channel. Nice post ❤. The main reason for me is power consumption and GPIO pin. With the best priced mini PC on eBay you won't get the power consumption and GPIO for my use case.

Certainly true from a practical perspective, but pis are a lot more fun to work with than a boring Intel based black box. I have several NUCs and several pis, they are both great solutions, I plan of gettig some pi 5s soon.

For me part of it is the fact that we can all have the same device at a relatively low cost. I appreciate the low power usage. The Pi gets a lot of use cases that aren’t found elsewhere. I can create a tutorial that’s easy to follow and standard for everyone. There are so many unique projects for the Pi

The Zero 2W seems to be back and the 3A is still available. Both are as capable or more as the original Pi B was. Thinking of the Pi B from 2013, it's still supported and runs the current PiOS just fine. The Pi5 is what the Retro Gaming, NAS, Desktop Computer and Media Player folks asked for and still is for the tinkerers what the og Pi was.

Great video as usual Lee, got my Pi 5s on order for October confirmed, I will stick with the Pi official active cooler a bargain at £4.90 and looks really well engineered, I love my Pi 400 passive cooling keyboard enclosure running at 2.4ghz no sweat and hope they bring out a Pi 500

Seems like a Pi 500 is a sure thing - if the extra oomph that the 5 provides is needed in any application, a desktop replacement is it. Hopefully 8GB will also be offered.

a metal nibbler tool would make a fairly neat cut to widen the metal or thin plastic case hole for the USB.

Nice, personally I'm hoping for a FIRC like passively cooled case. I have two custom passively cooled cases from a company in Quebec Canada that I really really like. They have drop down columns on the lid that connect to the CPU/RAM, but because the lid is milled from a single piece of aluminum and the cut outs on the back are designed for the PI4, they won't work on the PI5

As of Dec 2023, there still aren’t enough pi5 cases that use the pci ribbon connector for m.2 daughterboards. At least getting a pi5 has been pretty easy.

I think the official heatsink and fan then probably suss the stash of standoffs and Perspex top and bottom... All these custom cases are a bit of a money pit. It'll be interesting (when you get to it) to see the difference between a USB and PCI hard drives. Maybe you could compare the argon M2 difference between pi4 and 5?

I looked at the Argon site and didn't see any announcements for a replacement for the M.2 there. At first I thought that they would just need to redesign the top half, but the bottom part with the M.2 memory will also need redesign if it is to use the new PCIe interface instead of the USB3 slot.

Since the PCIe interface is single lane, the USB3 is about the same speed. It would be nice not to lose a USB port though.

I'm hoping Argon comes out with the equivalent of the Argon one case for the pi 5. I really like mine, and use it for the pi I use on the desktop. Very neat looking and great cooling.

I am going to update my Raspberry Pi 2 to 5. It looks like Ethernet adapter position is matching to 5, but other connectors can be in a wrong place. I will update you after receiving 5.

The company has a very competitive active cooling solution at 5€. You can even oc by 1ghz. Third party will need to be competitive if they want people to buy theirs.

Hi Lee, Really interesting video as usual. I have my PI5 on order but was wondering if you could check something. I use a 52PI perspex case the same as you, with the microSD adapter to access the slot at the front. Does this adapter slow down the speed of the microSD card with the PI5 or does it work just like a "pass-through"? Just hoping you could test that as I am sure many others use the same system with their PI4s. As usual you are my first stop for all things PI based. Cheers for all you do.

Lee , tine I think for you to do some drive speed test running the operating system from a ssd or usb drive as with the new RP1 south bridge chip each usb socket now has it;s own separate usb controller. 5 GiG through put on each usb3 socket !!!!!!!! Can we actually plug 2 ssd's into the usb3 ports at the one time without a crash... Say Retropie on one SSD and all the rom's stored on the second ssd or a film library stored on the second ssd no nas required..?????

Thanks for the tips. Can you please test the NESPi 4 USB to SATA adapter on the Raspberry Pi 5? Does it work? Does it perform well? Is it bootable? (I have a NESPi 4 case that currently has a Pi 4 in it. I think that would be a great choice for a Pi 5, because of the easily swappable hard drives.)

All the sata usb cables I have that work with Pi 4 also work with Pi 5. Same with m.2 and usb sticks. Compatibility seems great

Isn't the mini tower kit built for both the 3B and 4B Pis? I thought it came with both side panels for either board? Get a file, for metal, or a course emery board (for plastic cases) and file the the Ethernet socket until the USB socket has full access. I'll be modifying my 7 inch touchscreen case to fit the 5.

Thanks for the video this really helps. However let me please rant a bit: how idiotic it is to remove the headphone jack from a maker board? oh wait maybe they meant to use it on a nice 4k monitor that has a nice integrated 3.5mm audio port..... except the pi5 doesn't even have enough power to really be used with a display like that and at best will run 1440p as fast (or as slow) as the pi4 was running in 1080p.

we need to know the reason why they swapped the ethernet port to the other side because that kills the greater majority of existing cases, which will result in more artificial obsolescence and potential landfill waste. the point in many enclosed cases were to protect from dust as seen in open racks and open case designs. the more consistency they can keep across new models, the less clutter and chaotic mess is made.

Hi Mr Lee, near the end of the video, ya suggested that a 5V fan should be enough to cool the pi5, but will it prevent it from throttling during heavy load? Wouldn’t it be better to use a heatsink (even a small passive one which then be cooled by a 5V fan)?

The Pi 5 has a power button... can this be accessed in any of these cases? This is why I am holding off on cases for a while, because I can see the power button being an issue, more so than the USB/Ethernet powrt configuration. Otherwise, I would be looking at the old Pi 3 case I butchered to hold my first Pi 4. Still, interesting video.

The power button isn’t mandatory as you can still switch off by the plug. As it’s the first Pi with a power button, none of the cases provided access to it unless they are open at that end.

@leepspvideo You can bypass the power button, by unplugging at the mains. Can you bypass the power button, by plugging in the Pi, and it then automatically switches on and boots up? At the end of the day, we need patience. New cases will be around soon enough. You need to have a whole host of new items for the Pi 5, because of the changes to things like POE. Give it a few months, and we will have choice again.

Safe shutdown script works with pi5 in Nespi4case (i tested it) only doesnt works Led light. Maybe with a little change in the script the led would be works. I have no idea if this GPIO is the same like pi4. can you help us for adapt this amazing case in the pi5?

i found the problem. Pi5 is not the same gpio pinout but its similar. In pi4case led indicator needs the TX0 pin and pi5 doesn´t have it. We need help for adapt or make a little "mod" for adapt the pi5🙏

I have an update with nespi4Case. I read in two communities than the gpio is the exactly pinout like pi4 but the RetroflagShutdown script doesnt works. Buttons are functional but safe shutdown doesn't works and Power Led is off. If i turn off safeshutdown in the board, led is On. maybe we need a script modification but i have no idea. Can you help us with it?

The Pi 5 can be powered by the Raspad battery. I’m confident it will work. However plugging lots of extra devices may be a problem. This video was more intended to show the case you already own that works . I wouldn’t recommend buying a Nespi case for a Pi 5.

Can the new Pi5 be used as a streaming device? I tried the Pi4, 4 gig running Ubuntu, then Brave to log into You Tube, but it was pretty sluggish. I'm trying to do away with my Apple TV.

Apple TV is a great streaming device with official support for all the big streaming services. Unless you have a very old one. The Pi 5 is nice and fast but won’t get 4K support from the big streaming services

Roku, fire stick and Chromecast are all decent 4K streamers for official Apps. The Pi 5 is great for loads of other things. It’s also great for Kodi or Plex @@subiesojourner777

Aluminum is the American and Canadian spelling for the silver-white metallic element (number 13 on the periodic table) abundant in the earth’s crust. Aluminium is the preferred spelling outside North America. Neither term is superior to the other, and both are etymologically and logically justifiable.
