Thank you, this was very helpful as I am new to breeding my own rats to feed my snakes. I have been non-stop doing research and I have found your channel to be the most reliable when it comes to information on rats. I have went on many sites, and talked to other breeders, and they are fairly knowledgeable. But I don't just like to rely on one source, or on one person.

I did make a video about cleaning when we had only 10 rats. I guess it’s time to do an update video on our cleaning. We use aspen bedding.

I just found your videos and love them! I am about to set up a colony to feed raptors. How many breeding males do you keep at any time? When you retire your male(s) do you use one from a prior litter or do you purchase a new male to prevent inbreeding?

I started with 10 females and 1 male. I do keep a males from a previous litters. It takes a lot for rats to have inbreeding issues.

My main racks are built with cement tubs found at Home Depot. My maternity rack uses Freedom Breeder tubs. Both videos on how we made them are on the channel.

Do you hold back rats from each litter? How many males vs how many females? When you give the mom a 4 week break do you take her pups and leave her alone or put her with another mom?

I do not hold back from each litter. If I hold back any, it is to increase production or to replace older rats that are coming to the end of their lifecycle. Every once in a while I do keep a few that are special to me. When mom are on their break they are out back with the females they were with. Each tub is labeled and each female goes back to their tub after litters are separated. She remains with at least 1-3 other females during break periods. Rats should never be left alone. They are social creatures and will deteriorate quickly without a friend with them.

In one of your videos you mentioned how to wean out that ones who are aggressive. I have 6 female rats that gave/giving birth, 3 right away when I placed my hand in tank bit me. Two has never bit after they had babies not matter if I touched them or the babies. However out of the blue I had a momma rat bit me twice, first was when I was putting a baby back. Needless to say her pups are 15 days old. Does this make since to you why all of a sudden she bit? Should she be weaned out or was she trying to say something? I am lost. Maybe you can do a short video on how you would wean out rats, what ones you keep, all around saying the do's and dont's for what to look for and what to keep when breeding would be so helpful. Thank you.

We don’t either at this time. We use babies that die naturally or purchase pinkie from our local big scale breeder. The goal is to not have to buy at all.

Is there any licensing needed when starting out breeding? Can't find any definite info about it.

Typically, no, but always follow up with state and local laws. Some states are strict on quantity, color, and breed.

When you separate your females from the male,…where is the male? Is he alone in a separate tub? Thanks!

I have 3 tubs of at least 3 females for every male. He is cycled through each tub every3 weeks. This gives him 3 weeks with 3 females, 3 females will be resting and 3 females will be raising litters.
