Part 1: Ratan Tata Childhood - Bullied as a kid
Ratan Naval Tata was born into one of the richest families in India. Despite this, he faced a very disturbed childhood. His parents divorced when he was just 10. What followed was a period where he was ragged in schools as divorce was taboo in the 1940s. This only got worse once his mother remarried.
As a 10-year-old Ratan found strength in his grandmother who took care of him post the divorce. She taught him to maintain his dignity at all costs in such situations, giving him an alternative to fighting back playing an important role in shaping his character.
Part 2: Ratan Tata Standing up for himself
Every adolescent in Indian society has faced a situation where he either has to do what his father has chosen for him or what he really cares about. Ratan’s father Naval Tata had decided that he would move to the UK to get an engineering degree. Ratan on the other hand wanted to pursue Architecture in the US. His grandmother once again stood by his side encouraging him to speak up against his fathers’ wishes.
Part 3:Ratan Tata's Life in the US
Ratan went onto study Architecture at Cornell University university. Ratan received a job right out of college and recalls his life in Los Angeles as some of the best years of his life. He loved the weather, had a job, owned a car and even fell in love.
In a post for Humans of Bombay, he speaks of how he almost got married in Los Angeles. But life had different plans. Back in India his grandmother’s health began deteriorating. He decided to move back to India. But he had to leave his love behind as her parents weren’t comfortable due to the Indo-China war.
Part 4: Ratan Tata Return to India - Beginning at Tata
When JRD Tata had learnt that Ratan had returned to India and was about to join IBM he said “ He cannot be in India and work for IBM”. Ratan Tata joined Tata Engineering and Locomotive in 1962.
He worked as an apprentice on the shop floor and his responsibilities included shovelling limestone and working with the furnaces.
Part 5: Ratan Tata becomes Chairman of Tata
When Tata’s legendary Chairman JRD Tata stepped down there were many questions as to who would replace him. To everyone’s surprise, JRD Tata chose Ratan Tata as his successor. This caused unrest among the old guard as some of them had joined Tata when Ratan was just a child.
With the help of loyalists, Ratan managed to Retain Control within Tata. He then immediately began replacing the staff with younger talent.
Part 6: Ratan Tata's Achievements as Chairman

What came next were a series of achievements for both Ratan Tata and the Tata Group.
- They produced India’s first truly Indian car, ‘Indica’.
- In 2000 the group acquired Tetley Tea.
- In 2004 they acquired South Korea’s Daewoo Motors and hotels - The Pierre in New York.
- In what was one of the biggest acquisitions Tata acquired Anglo-Dutch steelmaker Corus Group Plc in 2007.
- In 2008 Tata Motors acquired the Jaguar Land Rover businesses from Ford Motor Company.
-During the 21 years, he led the Tata Group, revenues grew over 40 times, and profit, over 50 times.
Part 7: Ratan Tata Awards
Tata has been recognised and honoured with two of India’s highest civilian awards the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan.
