Roll 3 is currently playing. Its four melodies ‘Loreley’, ‘Preisend mit viel schönen Reden’, ‘Schäfflertanz 1. Teil’ and the ‘Wendelstein-Lied’ can be heard in March.
The clock with 43 bells and 32 life-size figures was installed in 1908 when the New Town Hall was completed. Every day at 11am and 12pm (and from March to October at 5pm), the clock plays two stories from Munich's 16th century history every 10 minutes or so. The carillon is now out of tune, which is also a topic of discussion at the Munich City Council.

The upper half (02:44) of the carillon tells the story of the wedding of the local Duke Wilhelm V (who also founded the famous Hofbräuhaus) to Renata von Lothringen (Renate of Lorraine). In honour of the happy couple, there is a tournament with life-size knights on horseback representing Bavaria (in white and blue) and Lorraine (in red and white); the Bavarian knight wins.
This is followed by the second story (05:18), the Schäffler dance, which takes place in the lower half of the clock. This story depicts the end of a severe plague epidemic that took place in 1517. The coopers are said to have danced through the streets to encourage the inhabitants to leave their homes again after being frightened by the plague. The coopers remained loyal to the Duke and their dance came to symbolise perseverance and loyalty to the authorities in difficult times. According to tradition, the dance is performed in Munich every seven years. In 1700 it was described as an ‘ancient custom’, but today's dance was not defined until 1871. The dance is performed during carnival; it was performed in 2019.
