Crouch End is more than just a leafy liberal suburb on London without a tube station!
In this video with @Joolz Guides - London History Walks - Travel Films we walk from Highgate Station to Crouch End including the parkland walk, Bob Dylan, Eurythmics, Trumpton and the usual array of weird facts.
There's the sculpture of Charles Darwin (or is it?), Banners, the chewing gum painter, the Boogaloo, and my favourite bakery Dunn's. Lotus car's first showroom, Hornsey St Mary's church tower and much more.

The small garage in Topsfield Parade used to be a bicycle repair shop called Robert’s Rebuilds back in the 1970’s. We used to bring our bikes in there when we were kids. Brilliant memories.

What a treat, a Joolzy on a Sunday afternoon. Funnily enough I've just relocated back to London and went to Crouch End via Highgate recently. Excellent review, wish I'd known the detail before I went, would have made my walk all the more poignant. As an aside, was in Jackson Lane theatre to see Ricky Gervais's comedy warm up shows, great little place. I really like Highgate.

This Crouch End area looks very original indeed, Joolz. All the older buildings look as good as the day they were built, with many small traditional businesses still intact. The place has also been swarming with musicians and actors too, in the past. What a terrific part of London this appears to be. Many thanks for this video.

Hi Joolz, this is superb. The best thing I ever did was move into this area. The Earl Haig Hall has that artillery weather vane because it used to be our local Royal British Legion club. RBL sold it to a chain of pubs who treated the interior with great respect by keeping it as it was, replete with military regalia and memorabilia but making it a live venue which seemed successful as it was popular. However, it's now a nursery which reminds me of Crouch End's other recent nicknames of Creche End or Nappy Valley; synonymous with yummy mummies.

I loved this wonderful video. In March 1940, at the age of 3, my Dad and Mum and my sister went tolive with my paternal grandparents at 38, Middle Lane. I have been associated with the area ever since then and love it very much. I even remember my Grandma calling us in from the back garden one Sunday during the Battle of Britain, where my sister and I had been following the flight of aircraft in the south eastern sky above, by the sound of their gunfire. Did you know that, during the 1950s, the King of Skiffle, Lonnie Donegan, also lived in Middle Lane, a few doors away from my grandparents. Thank you for the video. It is on my bucket list to visit Crouch End again, as soon as I am able. It is like home to me.

Thank you for the wonderful video. Heck, now realising how much I miss my time in and around Crouch End (1984-1992). Used to work at the Trades Union Congress National Education Centre (was Hornsey Art College now the school). Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox recorded at the Church Studio at that time too. There was a small cafe opposite run by an actress from the 50/60s - her name escapes me. Dunn's - best bakery for miles. The King's Head pub comedy nights were amazing. Saw many a good turn there....lots of whom became quite famous. Stink pipes....I live in Sheffield now where the stink pipes were shorter and topped off with gas lamps becoming "sewer gas destruction lamps". As an aside....actor Martin Clunes lived in a flat in Crouch End when he was with his first wife - early 90s. I've never been able to pinpoint where though.

@@edboss36 There are more shops now because the mall previously known as shopping city was built. The Barton's Department store was destroyed by a fire, BHS was built on the site which itself has gone too. Sainsbury's was in the High Road and you got served over the counter. Marks and Spencers in the High Road closed a few years ago as did the CO OP department store. The railway station above the High Road closed in the 1960s. There have been a lot of flats built. When I was born in 1959 trolley buses were still in service. I was taken home from Middlesex Hospital in Central London where I was born to Wood Green on a Trolley Bus. Super tour -ta, and great to see Banner's still in action (one of John Peel's faves, I believe).

Oh dear, you failed to mention that Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan in the 1950s both lived in the post-war block of flats next to the double stink pipes. Peter Sellers was brought up in a terrace house on Muswell Hill Road about 7 minutes walk away. He could have been in Highgate Station when Gerry Springer was born.

I stayed in Crouch End a few weeks ago for four days--great place. We had a great dinner at the Maynard Arms.

Joolz. I'm a big fan, been watching your videos for ages. I work in the Bull in Highgate. If you're ever in the area, do stop by and I'd be honoured to pour you a pint (on the house of course). Keep up the good work!

Tremendous. Lively and full of extraordinary information. The music seemed entirely appropriate. The piano and the informal singing.
