I had a fun time doing this for The Path to Carcosa and The Dunwich Legacy, so that means it's time to dive in and do it for The Forgotten Age. 5 years later, let's check all these cards out!

Commenting partly for the algorithm but also to thank you in general, Justin, and applaud your discussion of Arcane Research in particular. Kudos.

I have a few thoughts on some cards to compare/constrast our opinions and experiences. Love the list and every other thing I've disagreed on, I've simply re-evaluated the cards based on your good knowledge. But these four are where I wanted to share my thoughts. - Alter Fate: Great ► Fantastic. The result of the card is "neat", but when you start actually thinking about the impact of it being played after the fact, you see it has a heavy amount of shadow impact. From characters who would have died, wasted actions from some cards, entire turns that would have been wasted instead of getting clues, and often, scenarios that felt "easier" were because key fates were altered. A perspective that I'm sharing that I don't think was considered is that the value of this card skyrockets in correlation to how much less you know about a scenario. The consistency it adds in a blind run when you make mistakes on things you didn't even know were mistakes has garnered my respect for it, even for consideration of "Broken" in some of those cases. - Survival Knife (0): Great ► Good. I feel that it's upgrade is Fantastic to Broken, but often I find that Survival 0 CAN be great but if I had a .45 Automatic, a Machette and a Survival Knife 0 in my hand, I often find myself going others before the Knife gets upgraded. It's currently in the same tier as Ornate Bow, Old Hunting Rifle, Timeworn Brand and Stunning blow. In all cases I would choose those over this one. That said, it's still a good card, and fantastic in cases where the damage taking synergizes with your investigator in particular. (I suspect/feel this may have gotten "too early in the video" bias, but at the end of the day, I'm hashing out semantics on a top tier opinion list. LUL at me!) - Expose Weakness: Fine ► Regret. I'm sure there are others who have found a good place for this card, but for gimmicks I attempted to make a deck with 2 of this, and it's 6xp, two card slots in a seeker deck, and a typical "test to reduce difficulty by 3-6" for a single attack (2 cards worth) with no real action economy gain.. it just made me always ask "What could I have gained by 6xp, 2 cards and something to assist in fighting?" Honestly, I walked away feeling like I would have done better with 2 overpowers in a seeker deck and used the 6 exp to indecisively swap level 0 cards around 3 times. This card is like tasting durian Kool-aid when it had grape on the package, to explain how I feel about it now. (Fun excuse to share this story/opinion) - Persuasion (0): SITUATIONALLY Regret ► Fine, Good or Great even [Situational Disclaimer: This is in light of the recent taboo that removed it's humanoid keyword.] This card is weirdly transformed by the keyword adjustment, and the more that I play with it, the more I find that the humanoid keyword was there as a balancing aspect more than I realized. Running 2 of these with Fine Clothes is a wonderful experience (Even singleton Fine Clothes with Big Draw/Hand) It plays like reverse seeker handcuffs in my mind and provides some of the unique ways to solve problems like all other cards that remove threat from the board without killing it. I actually prefer this in my hand instead of the disc I've found, which surprises me. Playing with it instead of other staples in light of the taboo has completely transformed the way I value this card. (IMPORTANT NOTE: I don't think he even said the word "Taboo" in the entire video, so with that in mind, totally understand why this wasn't a conversation point. But I figured sharing this story/perspective could be neat) - Fence (1): Regret ► Fine My only thought here is that I see plenty of ways to build around this where I personally wouldn't have regretted it. It creates a fun change to the game if you want to build around it, and other cards in the Fine tier are as situational as Fence. I mean, I value it as much as I'd value Try and Try again. But yeah, that's just my mileage with it.

Marksmanship is great, practically a ranged Spectral Razor for gunfighters. It's at it's best against Penguins or The Man in the Palid Mask where it's potentially saving you 4-5 actions (2 moves, 1 engage, 1 attack) but even in the basic cases it's amazing action compression for protecting your teammates or shooting Whippoorwills. People tend to assume it's a meme card like Telescopic Sight or Springfield M1903, but it's actually just a great combat trick like Sweeping Kick or Brute Force.

With Cornered(2) you are taking this if you are taking lots of cards with no or non-useful icons. It's basically turning any card into a unexpected courage. With otherworldly compass - it's floor is the same as a magnifying glass on all but the initial location. You can take this and not feel bad that you don't have a magnifying glass in both hands. Also it's a relic so doesn't necessarily take up a hand slot.

Dark Prophecy belongs in "fine" But besides Diana there is 1 other place --> It's a nice 1 of in Jaqueline to help find the elder sign for her weakness (as you can't cancel any of the tokens).

Watching this, I see Justin explaining his levels like the following: I regret playing this... = I regret playing this, even when I should have been in the perfect scenario to play it Busted = It's busted, it's great even in scenarios that it should have been the worst card to play.. which don't exist.. cause it's busted. Fine/Good/Great/Fantastic = +1 Tier if it's in a deck that it's made for, -1 Tier if I play it in any other deck, +0 if it's essentially filler Doesn't change the fact that it STILL makes cards like Arcane Research very odd to think about.

Not done with the video yet but - hey I played Backpack 0 in Ursula and Bob and it was great. Also Blood Eclipse 3 probably doesn't have a home, but I've found a home for Blood Eclipse 1 in Vincent and it's so good in there.

I also agree that Arcane Research is a thing that allows Mystics to be on the level of other classes. Purple bois are never as good as specialists, and their tools cost A LOT of exp. Arcane and Rabbit Hole just let you build a decent all-rounder instead of a meatball with Wards

Can you see why I chose TFA over PTC? With Core + Dunwich, there were just more usable cards with TFA in my opinion. Also I just drew bloody Paranoia with 6 res... we don't like Paranoia...

You should have stuck with your gut on "Stunning Blow". If I'm fighting and I can take it, I do. It just feels great to be able to say that the massive boss enemy isn't a problem for another turn and we can all kick the crap out of it. I personally would have bumped Arcane Research into busted, but really it's only because you can take two of them; I house-rule my deck building to limit it to only one because I think (at least pre-EotE) it was a bit boring watching every Mystic grab two right at the beginning.

I also forgot to say that Take Heart is in our group is basically "Eucatastrophe" because 9/10 on the commit, we end up passing even if we are down 2 or 3. Somehow it always works out in our favor? So we end up including it because we know that if we commit it, we will pass.

If it was a reaction, I think it'd be very playable. Other numbers on the card would probably need to change for that, but it would take the slog out of the card for sure.

Gotta disagree wrt fence. I recently played an illicit deck (Finn), and it almost felt like cheating playing all assets fast (and/or at a discount). That said, indeed for anyone else without a plethora of illicit cards... much less useful.

I agree, I'm playing it in a Kymani Jones underworld market deck, and it's the first thing I want to get out. Especially nice with Pay Day. Also, the ability to leave weapons in your underworld market and only pull them out when you need them letting you play them without attacks of opportunity is great. I would say in a typical game, I'm getting 5-6 actions and 1-2 resources out of it. That's a very good deal.

I don't think Otherworldly Compass is as good as you make it out to be. In my opinion it's a worse Flashlight. What I don't like about it, is the fact, that the connecting locations have to be revealed. That already makes it unplayable in solo and very rough in 2P since you need someone else to reveal the locations for you or spend tons of meaningless movement actions to reveal everything around you. If it was just connecting locations it would be worth the experience imo, but as it is I don't see why I should be spending 2 XP on this in such a contested slot. I get that the value increases in 3 or 4 player games, but I'd still say there's better things to spend your XP on.
@PlayingBoardGames
@PlayingBoardGames 9 месяцев назад
I played it in the deck that I discussed in the video after recording this and Otherworldly Compass was an absolute all-star (in two-handed solo, mind you). It's not a card you buy to go in any deck, but after playing it, I'm confident the card has homes it shines in and stand by my ranking for it in this video.

@@craftymoustache I think you need to either be in test at 0 or specifically the Trish/Lola Santiago deck for it to be worth the time and XP. I'm doing the Trish/Lola deck and commonly grabbing 3 clues for one action while testing against 0, it's wild.
