I planned a trip to Raton to film the Southwest Chief and had hoped to catch it on the pass, but 40 miles of road construction delayed my arrival. I was very lucky however and caught the Chief just after it had arrived at Raton. I have added some other highlights of the area including some of the remaining semaphores near Wagon Mound, and the Castaneda Hotel at Las Vegas. If the Castaneda looks familiar, you may have seen it in scenes from the movie "Red Dawn" that was filmed in the Las Vegas area.
For more on the Castaneda, please check out this excellent RU-vid video:

Beautiful! Very nicely done and with a good music selection. More rail videos need to be like this one. I've been reading up on Raton Pass and this has made me want to get there even sooner. Thanks for sharing this.

Cool that the same engine was in the consist and that Raton was your stop. I suspect Amtrak keeps the same locos on the SW Chief except when being serviced. Lots of Santa Fe history with that area. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I'm happy to report the Hotel Castaneda is now reopened after a beautiful refurbishment. I wanted to stay there in July, but the place was totally booked by a TV film crew, but the hotel officially made itself available to guests again on July 26 2021.

I opened up Raton Station about 1 week later after the upload date of this video. Raton used to open every early June thru Late August for the arrival of the Boy Scouts. Detraining at Raton to continue on to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron NM, 40 miles away. A few days later on June 12th, 2011, Raton Pass (including I-25) was shut down for a week due to a massive fire on the pass (Called theTruck Fire). Original speculation was that WB SW Chief engine sparks caused the fire. Since the fire came very close to burning parts of Raton, people were not too happy with me and Amtrak. Fortunately it was determined that the fire was started by 2 ATV's sighted by the engineer on train 3 coming into Raton. Thank for the memories.

@BNSF7776 I agree, the last time i rode the SW Chief was in 1995 and we ate lunch and watched the pass from the dining car. This was the first time I'd been to the Raton depot off the train. Not sure where the coal mine would be. York Canyon is mined out and the spur track is used for car storage now. Thanks for watching.

Good one Jim, It's very senic from riding #3 over the pass. It would be a sad shame to loose the chief on the route. Heard talk about a coal mine opening on the line some where. 5*****

Did you notice the over-printed title at 3:07 shows "Santa Fe - La Castaneda" instead of Las Vegas, NM

What it meant was that the Santa Fe railroad owned the hotel and built it in 1889, thus the Santa Fe's possessive indication. The comment was not intended to denote location, but ownership. Thanks for watching.
