Absolutely. There's an element to RATT's songwriting where they'll throw you a sonic curveball in the form of placing a progression that's so unexpected and unorthodox, that as a songwriter you're like, "is this a bridge masquerading as a chorus"? "What the fuck IS that"? But it ALWAYS works. And this is the record where they took that element they had cultivated, and started implementing it more and more.

Invasion Of Your Privacy is the album that got me into Ratt. I bought the album from Camelot Music store back in 1988 at barely 10 years old. I admit that I bought the album because of the album cover of the gorgeous woman. I didn't find out until years later that she was a Playboy playmate back in the day. As much as I love Out Of The Cellar album, Invasion Of Your Privacy is and has always been my favorite Ratt album ever. All ten songs are Phenomenal. It has the best sound out of all the Ratt albums in my opinion. I recently last year got the first four studio albums remastered from the label Rock Candy and they all sound better than ever. This interview was very entertaining.

I was in love with RATT by '85.. I had just graduated and my grandparents took me to Yellowstone Nat Park for a week as celebration gift.. No music for a week, basically, although they bought me Motley Crue's new album Theater of Pain at end, and they turned the fader to very back of the van so I could hear it, n they couldnt :) All i could think about was Teri Goodbrake (a girl back home) and Invasion of Your Privacy lol :) .. But 1st day back home (I had bought tickets months in advance), after a week without weed n music, saw Ratt n Bon Jovi that nite in STL... And it kicked ass! Summer 1985 :)

These are some amazing narratives🎶 I remember buying all of these Ratt albums back in the day and seeing Beau Hill’s name in the cassette sleeve. Ratt had such an incredible formula, so melodic and so catchy at the same time. I remember in middle school that there were so many Motley Crue fans at school, I was kind of afraid to admit I liked Ratt much better( I’m 51 and I still feel the same way🤘🏾🎶) The first time I was introduced to Ratt was on the closing credits on Entertainment Tonight one evening and it was the Round and Round video. So at the time in the Sunday newspapers (80’s) there was an insert advertisement to buy 10 cassettes for 1c. Ratt’s Out of the Cellar (along with Prince’s Purple Rain) was one of them and I have been a fan every since🤘🏾🎶🤘🏾🎶

I found the tape he was looking for and he says, "I've looked in every store from LA till now and I find it in Hartford, Connecticut. I wished him luck. Not the kind to freak over a celeb. Definitely should have been a single, as a ballad. Unfortunately back then it wasn't cool to put out too many singles on a record . The standard then was 2 songs, maybe 3 if the 2 songs took off. When Slippery came out and the entire album almost was a single did that mindset kind of shift. I think Home Sweet Home from Crue kind of fell into being the ballad kick off band because Theatre was a terrible album. Smoking was a cover and was just dumb . I think the label was like fuck we don't have a rocking single on this album or a good some except Home Sweet.

Been a fan since Out Of The Cellar and have all their albums including the EP. Invasion is my favorite, followed by OOTC. I regularly listened to this album on repeat and am surprised I didn't wear out the vinyl. , Some have criticized it for being over-produced (which was common in 80s metal) but I love the sound Beau got on this record.

Invasion's guitar sound is TOTALY different than Cellar's, yet Beau said it was the same amp as Cellars'. I get listener fatigue from Cellar's bright and edgy guitar tone. I can listen to Invasion over and over again, because the guitar tone is so warm! I have a Laney 100 watt AOR head that sounds exactly like Invasion's guitar sound! It has almost the same exact circuitry as a Marshall Superlead, but a few parts have different values (the signal capacitors). The mid's are slightly cut because of this reason. This is why Black Sabbath's guitar tone is more heavy ( Laneys' have less accentuated mids than Marshall amps ) I disagree that Ratt used the same Marshall for their first two albums as Beau said... ( unless Beau did some serious mid and treble cutting on Invasions' guitar recording !!! And that doesn't sound like something an engineer/ mixer would do. They wouldn't mess with an original guitar's amp's tone !!! ) Feedback on this would be greatly appreciated, being I love Invasion's guitar sound !.....
@tmx63
@tmx63 4 года назад
The Laney AOR 100 circuit is _nothing_ at all like the Marshall Super lead circuit. Depending on which version of the classic Marshall circuit you're looking at, the Laney has either 2 or 3 more preamp stages, for starters. The AOR series schematics are available on thetubestore website, and the Marshall schematics are available pretty much everywhere. Regarding the tonal differences, something as simple as mic selection and/or placement can drastically alter a given amp's recorded tone.
@curtisprice9806
@curtisprice9806 4 года назад
@tmx3 I have the schematics for both. I modify amps and repair them. The AOR has extra gain because of one extra preamp stage/tube. The circuits are identical except for a few caps that give the mids a different voice.
@tmx63
@tmx63 4 года назад
@@curtisprice9806 Again, two completely different amps. The Marshall - two or three gain stages depending on input used, a cathode follower into the tone circuit, phase inverter, and an output section. The Laney - channel switching, 4 gain stages, a cathode follower into a completely different type of passive tone circuit, another tube stage into an IC-driven effects loop, two preamp volumes and a master volume. Not to mention different interstage capacitor values, cathode resistors and cathode bypass cap values. The only thing these two amps have in common is that they are both tube amps that are covered in black tolex.
@curtisprice9806
@curtisprice9806 4 года назад
@tmx3 lol! Cool....different output transformer, voltages, I hear you. Every little thing makes a difference, and Laney was originally made so people who couldn't afford the Marshall Plexi could buy this close sounding copy. Thanks for stirring my interest to revisit the AOR schematic, and to see the things you mentioned. This was 15 years ago when I compared the two side by side. What was positive though, the Laney has a different mid voice than a Superlead (early 70's). The Laney sounds just like Black Sabbaths guitar sound, and Ratt's IOYP. My Marshall Superleads can't get those mids even with an eq pedal. I post this for people who are curious about this subject matter. Peace

@chriscampbell9191 4 года назад
I would think -- not just from this interview, where Mr. Hill talks about working with the sound -- that the miking and EQing of the guitar amps may have been different between the two albums. Producers do a lot of stuff during recording guitar tracks -- reverb, doubletracking, etc. All of which you could say is messing with a guitar amp's tone, to a certain extent, at least.

Very interesting! A great interview! If they were paying by the day, assuming that's 24 hrs and not an 8am - 8pm thing, why couldn't everyone start later? Beau comes in at 10am and does his pre-session stuff etc. Guess he was looking for more of a "standard business hours" type of gig.

Great interviews! Did you ever speak to Beau about the Dancing or Reach sessions? Also, where do you get your numbers for album sales? Not questioning, just generally curious. I have always been curious about specific US sales, so I appreciate that you include those numbers. It's surprisingly difficult to find accurate worldwide sales for the ratt albums.
@fullinbloom
@fullinbloom 3 года назад
I did do interviews for Dancing and Reach. More info on that soon. The numbers were from the last time Beau researched them, which I believe was around 2005. An easy way to estimate worldwide sales is to take whatever their US sales were and they usually would match that in worldwide sales. So if Ratt sold 3 million copies of one album in the US, they would have sold approximately 3 million additional copies to the rest of the world....6 million total. Of course there are bands that sometimes sold way better overseas like an Iron Maiden or Faith No More, but it's pretty close.

I love Beau’s work. I would have liked to hear how he would have produced really heavy bands. I think he and Testament would have been a good pairing in the late 80s.
@rjc7289
@rjc7289 4 года назад
I would have to respectfully disagree. Beau's sound is too slick and polished to work for a thrash metal band. If he can take the heavy out of bands like Winger, Warrant and Twisted Sister, he would've definitely clipped Testament's balls right off!

Interesting interview! Some Ratt members have complained about Beau. But it’s quite understandable when you realize how young and inexperienced they were in the beginning. Also, when you see the sales figures in this episode, Invasion, now should be close to 3 million and Reach, very close to 2 million. Not that as bad as it looks

Dangerous should have been a single as well. Closer, and Never Use Love are such good tracks - that intro was awesome. This is one of the most underrated rock albums from the 80's. It still stands up as such a fine album. Now, it's not on the level of Appetite from GNR, even though the guitar work is as good as ANY rock album from that era. ANY. But this album is so damn good. It reminds me when I was 14-15 years old in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Usually that first (initial) LP comes easier as it is a compilation of years of work and ideas, even re-worked pre-existing songs. Album 2 usually is crunch time, music execs want it now mentality, schedules, band is famous on the road and trying to outdo the initial success.
@WatchingItBurn502
@WatchingItBurn502 4 года назад
That's what separated the men from the boys right there. Being able to deliver that sophomore LP on a moment's notice ( record company's schedule ). Good bands were smart enough to know that and not only had the killer initial material for record number one, they also already had an albums worth or more of material in their back pocket ready to go for a great headstart on number two as to not have their backs to the wall. Then they only had to write maybe a couple or three tracks for album 2 while in preproduction. Generally those albums were only 1 to 2 years apart also so the songs they did have ready to go for album number two didn't get a chance to sound dated🔥
