So, this is a link to Raul's Miscast 2022 performance, Come To Your Senses, from Tik Tik Boom (you may recall all the hype surround the version Lin Manuel just released on Netflix this past year. The laughter was about the subtle humor: 1) When Raul Esparza deftly throws in a little accent saying "It's true for Jew, not for me" and later ' Jew were in love, or so Jew said" 2) The extra long pause where they lock eyes. We know they are playing it intense and true to the original, but the tension created by waiting just a little exte long pushes the dramatic over the line into the melodramatic. Which is what they are enjoying playing with - delivering a solid performance with just a little extra oomph. So skilled, so deft. Makes you want to cry and laugh.

Oh, thank you for this! You know how much I love Raul's performances. I agree with the commenter who suggested that the audience was laughing at the accents. It's hard to know with Miscast whether the performers are going for camp or playing it straight, so the audience can never be sure how they're supposed to react. But once they got past the duet to Raul, there was no doubt he was going for the pure emotion and the audience was swept away, as were we all. My favorite Raul Miscast is one I highly recommend is The Man that Got Away. (NOTE: He also did the same number at a Broadway Backwards event, but the video is HORRIBLE, and the Miscast performance is much much better. Be sure to view the MISCAST version if you want to be blown away by another Raul performance!)

I think the audience was laughing at the played up "accents". I didn't find it distracting.

Lin Manuel is not a great singer. Raul is. Raul brings so much gravitas to his performance and he never pulls back, no matter what he sings. The laughter almost ruins the performance for me, but you can tell that he moves the audience because they go quiet when they realize just how serious he is. That's how powerful of a singer he is. He's done several miscast performances, and people always go quiet when he really starts getting into it because he doesn't just sing -- he performs. He does nothing in halves, always in wholes. I am still very angry that he hasn't gotten his Tony.

I don’t think they should have performed together. They have similar tones, but it’s like Lin Manuel is a very less talented version of Raul (as a singer and performer), he should stick to being backstage or film directing (he did such a beautiful job with Tick… Tick… Boom!). Then again, since they have a similar tone, it’s impossible not to compare them, and Raul’s basically wiping the floor with him… and it doesn’t look good for neither of them, their energies are so far apart that it kind of seems Raul is a little over the top, exaggerating, overacting, oversinging, but he’s not, he’s just standing next to someone who is one chromosome away from being a cactus. I know Lin has studied a lot and has a lot of experience, but there are just some things you are born with or without, and cannot be taught.
