Join us in Rausu, on the east coast of Hokkaido, on what I think is the coolest drift ice cruise in Japan. For just a couple of weeks each year, its possible to take this cruise, not only for sightseeing, but for epic bird photography as well. This cruise makes you feel like you are polar explorer, and it takes you to one of Japan's best bird photography locations. Seeing eagles on drift ice from a boat made it possible for me to shoot the best bird photos I've ever taken.
Whether you are planning to travel to Japan when it re-opens, or just enjoy some virtual travel, you have come to the right place. Japan Photo Explore is a series of travel and photography vlogs and videos that show you some amazing places, some you’ve probably never heard of.
Hi, my name's Nick Pitsas. I am a photographer and video producer and I've been traveling to Japan since 2009, including five trips in winter, so if you have any questions about travel and photography in Japan, I'm happy to try to answer them. I look forward to your comments and questions. More videos are coming so if you’d like to see them, please click the notifications button so that you’ll know when new videos are uploaded.
For all the photography in this video my photography buddy Ted and I both used Fujifilm X-T2 camera bodies. For the bird photography we used Fujifilm XF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 lenses. If you have any questions about gear, let me know.
Please note that none of the content of this video, nor the equipment we used, was sponsored.

Last time I was in Hokkaido one of the locals told me that if it gets very snowy you can't access Shiretoko. Do you have any experience with this in February?

Yes, that's right. Most of the Shiretoko Peninsula is not accessible by road during winter, including February.

When exactly was this video shot? I’m planning to visit both Utoro and Rausu on February 10 to experience the drift ice up close.
