Thank you Jake 🙌🏼 been getting links sent to my inboxes all weekend and just managed to sit down and watch. Chuffed to bits if I'm honest and of course very grateful and even flattered with the review. It's nice to hear compliments about stuff that I spent a lot of time and effort with. Can't thank you enough, and all the best with your channel 👊🏼 🥰
Hi Matt... as per the whole buzz of the video, the thanks very much returns to you for the great music and great times you've been a big part of creating. Appreciate you dropping in and leaving this comment. Love and Respect 👊🙏 - Jake
Hi Matt I love your work I just didn’t know how many tracks were yours!! As I said in another reply, your tracks are basically Carl Cox whole set at Fantazia Big Bang ‘93 cheers
Slipmatt is a legend... He's been around a long time. Slipmatt along with Stu Allan both the Godfathers of the rave scene... Shame Stu Allan is no longer with us. A true legend gone to soon. RIP.❤
D J Slipmat was my intro into hard core rave in the early 90'S, Had just brought my first BMW E30 325i, filled the boot with amplifiers and subwoofers and just cruised to his music, happier times 😊😊
Classics.....I was around 15/16yrs old at that time, On a Raga Tip, completely lost in life at that age, brings back so many memories, now still lost in life but enjoying a beer & SMD 1 A, I forgot how good he was then.........listening from Indonesia :)
Ah ...welcome to you from all the way over in Indonesia 🙏❤️ Lost in life at 16....yeah man I remember that. Trying to find your way. Lost still.... I resonate with too. I think the only real difference is that as you get older, wisdom can help to realise that perhaps there never was an actual 'way' to find 🤷 Just whatever meaning feels right in your heart ❤️❤️❤️
😃 Hardcore breaks between 1991 and 1994 is in my opinion the peak of the rave scene, a golden era combining both 4 to the floor kicks with crusty breaks. Dj Slipmatt crossed genres and unified the people in the dance. This is why Slipmatt will always be my number 1 👊
Hi ya, I just wanted to say thank you so much for these videos. I'll be 47 this year, I was introduced to hardcore proudly in 93 when I was 16. Sometimes I can't remember what I did yesterday but these tunes take me straight back to the best early music years of my life. I still love the oldskool vibes to this day. These videos are greatly appreciated.🙏 I've found some amazing mixes on SoundCloud.
Just found this channel sat down listened to tracks i haven't heard in decades and bought tears to a 57yr old Great memories of experiences and lost friends came flooding back . Thank you jake .
The recurring theme sample you mention that is found in a lot of the SMD tracks is an effect called “cyclic timestretch” that you could do on Akai samplers that were mainly used to make these tunes. You’ll notice it’s the same breakbeat used in the track, except processed using the timestretch feature which makes it sound all metallic and echoey. There’s a good video here on youtube of Bizzie B explaining how to do it on the Akai sampler.
We had a pirate station here in the West Mids in the early/mid 90s called ‘Exile FM’. It was BRILLIANT! It started on Friday evenings and played non stop until early hours Monday morning. They played all of this stuff. Naughty Naughty, Vibes and Dougal, Wishdoctor so on. The only place you could hear it at that time. I’m nearly 48 now & still love it!
So nice to hear someone else enthuse about parts of these tracks like I do! It normally falls on deaf ears with friends/family. Check out Slipmatts podcast ' World of Rave', its flippin brilliant too! Keep up the good work Jake , enjoying these vids.
Hi mate, thank you for that. Yes not everybody appreciates the passion pointed in the direction of this genre. I will check out the podcast. Cheers for the heads up 👊
Loved all these tracks back in the day and had them all on Vinyl as well. His remix of in complete darkness was always great. Some of his later remixes were really bangers as well, Always loved his remix of take me away, And also a good memoory for me was Dj Demo - You're Mine (Slipmatt Remix)
DRUM BEATS WAS MY FAV. I WAS LUCKY ENUFF TO GET MY 7" ON A RAGGA TIP SIGNED BY SLIPMAT ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO WENT HE LAST PLAYED AT THE VENUE PENZANCE CORNWALL, EVEN GOT PHOTO TAKEN WITH HIM WITH THE SIGNED COPY
Just discovered this channel. Love it. This cat knows his stuff, and his passion and energy are deeply infectious-as is his obvious love for the scene.
For all who liked happy hardcore in 1990s when they were young, will always remember the music, and your sets Amazing how you guys can put music together Your music vocabulary is very interesting, in how you describe the music you play.
Wow thank you RU-vid algorithm for suggesting this - I started listening to slipmatt during university with secondhand mixtapes. This brings back some big memories of over 30 years ago. Big thank you for this video ❤
This brings back l memories. Haven’t heard these tunes for years. Almost 50 now and had to start doing the dance with the tunes again. Love it. Thankyou and a big Thankyou to slipmatt
What an innovative channel, excellent presenting and fantastic music. I have to say, thank you for your words on SL2 Hypnosis Remix, there is something magical and dreamlike about that tune, it has captivated me since I first heard it. I absolutely love it and have been enchanted by it since 1992 (the magical year)! Fantastic channel!
I just wonder what the scene would have looked like without Matt in it ? He shaped so much, and it panned out a lot along with his vision tbh in terms of music, and just being one of the best DJ's to ever do it. So thankful he's still around.
That SMD sample is the funky drummer break. It's been timestretched in the Akai to be twice the length, then played an octave higher so it's back to the original speed but all pitched and weird sounding. I didn't know it was funky drummer until right now when I tried it and got exactly the same result :) Great vid btw. I'm on day 17 of waiting for a couple of SMDs to arrive and am starting to worry they've gone to the great hermes hole in the sky. My question is - did Slipmatt make the compnded remix? And if not, who the hell did? 😂 He did say he made SMD based on compnded and wanted more tunes like that one to play. Oh and the horsey clip clop coconuts is apache 🤣🤣
Mate, just discovered your channel. I absolutely love that era of 91-94. Those SMD plates are absolute bangers, you're spot on there! Good luck with the channel, subscribed 👍
Doing 46 this year in October, time does fly, just wish sometimes we could fly back and visit. So many good vibes. Just keep havin'it ! Was into the hard house and trance later (Camden Palace@Peach) but kept all the music I ever bought, couple of the UD slipmatt specials still knocking around
@@rave-vinyl-reminiscence Thnx mate, I seriously appreciate your effort. I am so grateful to be able to find people like yourself on RU-vid, managed to find a few channels with recordings of the London pirate stations (early garage mostly) up till 99, you can't imagine the smiles 😜
89-93 crew thank you so much man that track noise been trying to find that out since 😂 you know how it is you just hear bits of tracks in a mix respect 😎👊❤
Dj slipmatt is the daddy. Best dj on the planet imo. Aint nobady that get tunes in the mix as quick or as on point as mr nelson. His dreamscape 8 set is unbelievable for how many tunes he plays in that hour n a half. And its all vinyl none of this pressing sync bollox. As for the smd series all are masterpieces but for me the b side of smd3 is the one, its just a unique track nothing else sounds like it.
I had the absolute pleasure of chatting to him at the ultimate 90's rave at Ingliston in Edinburgh. What an absolute gent and humble man. absolute LEGEND
Slipmatt knocked out some absolute banging tunes but Smd 1 has gotta be 1 of my favourite tracks from the 90s. Great channel that took me right back to the best times in oy life, even though the memories aren't as clear as i would like. 🤣🤣
DJ Slipmatt such a legend. Met him at Madisons in Bournemouth. Love his World of Rave podcast and also Slips house. If you are an old raver check em out.
I'm 56 now and there's nothing like the original tracks. No disrespect to smd but the music was made up of old samples from the originals. Slipmat is a legend. I'm enjoying the uploads by the way, good stuff.
Other than ron wells i cannot think of one producer that does not use samples. It is what the whole thing is all about. Not sure what you are getting at dude 😃
The best mix (studio) of any DJ I ever heard was 'Slipmatt Vol.3'... Never forget going to Soul Man records to in my sisters Chevette on a hot mid June day in 1991, coming back with some vinyl and hearing Moby Go for the first time... Bought vol's 1 & 2 after that, they were equally as good.... GOAT hardcore Dj IMO for both selection and using of skills in just the right measure (not to excess). Legend!
Cheers for sharing mate 👊 I hear you about the importance of a balance between good DJ skills and not being excessive. It's very possible to actually do TOO much and detract from the beauty of the tunes themselves.
Vol. 3 Would love to hear that. I have one which starts with SMD 1 then 'The Void'. Double cassette and I had to find every tune from it! great mix. But mine was from 93.
When I did pirate radio we had to play ads every 30 mins. One of the ads had way in my brain on it and I must have heard it 100s if not 1000s of times, I can even hear the voiceover in my head whenever I hear the song now. Same with Transglobal Underground/Temple head (pitched up obvs). Still don't get bored of hearing either despite how caned they both were.
Exile FM had an ad for a taxi firm using Hurt you So by Jonny L. I can still remember the script and phone number. ‘Taxis, taxis! You need a taxi? Call…’
@@nedseagoon5101 ha. weird isn't it how certain things stick? It was done by some guy called Rob G and it sounded all professional but he was just some random bloke from Nottingham on the scene. I met him once. The tape even had bits worn out and it wow and fluttered, people must have heard it 1000s of times. I think on Thursdays or Fridays we had a late slot which had no specific end time so when we finished we put a tape in that was recorded earlier and sometimes it played all weekend if nobody went back.
Brilliant remember all those productions and it brings a flood of raving memories back from my youth. As did most I listened to hardcore in my Teen years growing up with my mates on the streets getting up to no good and eventually as we grew older we went to the raves and experienced the nights . What memories ! As I got older I swayed more towards House music then and came away from the underground sound and experienced Ibiza. I still love house music to this day but I still respect that these underground sounds led me to all the great dance music times and experiences I’ve had in my life ! 😃🙌🏻👍🏻🎶
Slipmatt was my favorite happy hardcore DJ back in the day was the first tape I'd play when I got a new dreamscape pack. SMD 4a was my favorite. Great video
I love it, takes me back to my first few years of DJing 1992 and 1993. These records were so hard to find back then especially being from Florida but On the Ragga Tip was absolutely insane tune. LFG. These were the beginning and precursor to all the amazing Breaks, Jungle and Drum and Bass. I was familiar with all of these hardcore tracks but had so little few of these amazing tracks. But they influenced so much that came after it.
I love the way you get so worked up over certain sections of these brilliant tracks, I have my own breakbeat collection made up of tunes for exactly this reason, they just resonate and excite like nothing else.
Slipmatt is a belta DJ. I've jumped around afew raves while slipmatt was on the Dex at Rezerection ingleston.seen sL2 afew times too also at the Rez .1992-1995
First time finding the channel and being educated on tunes Ive heard but never named. I found, the longer I watched, the more interested in you presenting and your explanations, than the tracks. Bravo.
Wicked video, I really appreciated this, thnaks for putting this together. "Hear Me" and "Breaking Free", two of mt all time favourite tracks from Slipmatt. I often thought Kevin Lemon D got his inpiration from listening to him! You can hear Violent Killa in "Breaking Free" easy peasy (for me anyway!). Have a top weekend, sir! Where you from, what you on...? Easy!
The “coconuts” on SMD 3 are the bongos from Apache by Incredible Bongo Band, sped up and chopped to all hell. I’ve never heard these SMD releases. We got everything very late over here in the US. Thanks for sharing!
Ah...nice to be able to share them with you 😊 They were milked every week over here in the UK back in the day...and so they're loaded with many memories.
Jake you’ve opened my hart and mind agen when I first seen you I was writing all the tunes down, I’ve got the slipmat vinyl but that ten 44 I didn’t know what it was or who bye , I’ve got a tape with dj hype and what a tape with ten 44 and slipmat vinyl on , keep on doing your channel, rockin ferrous, peace love happiness, and who’s out there
Great stuff , Love the Sterns flyers on the wall , What a venue that was , I went many times loved the underground room with the techno , Was a regular at the Rhyrhum station back then too ,Great times , Thanks for the trip back in time , Oioiiiii
You have summed up everything I feel about Breaking Free and Hear Me! I genuinely consider the bass drop on BF as one of if not the best on any track… Absolutely T for Tremendous!
Slipmatt, so much to answer for. Just lovin these dips you make into hardcore history. Definitely hear some interesting stuff here as long it doesnt get too sirupy. Thanks for the effort🙏🎶❤
bit obvious, but first time i heard on a ragga tip. it was the last song played in club labrynth and the place exploded in sound and colours. ill never forget that moment. it sounded like nothing id heard before.
Mate it's 10 past 1 in the morning and I just found this video. I gotta catch up with the rest now. You OK to take the blame when I ring in in the morning? 😂 Wicked. Looking forward to Seduction, I'm sure you're working round to that one! 🤜🤛
😂 that's a late start on a such high energy music vids mate ! Seduction...I'm going to definitely have to revisit and do that video properly some time in future. I did a lot of his stuff in my very first video...which already feels over basic and falling way short of the necessary respect needed to be paid to John.
Wow.. I never knew the artist/name for ten 44, always thought it was a DJ Red Alert & Mike Slammer track! Another amazing video mate, the way you describe the tracks you play really resonates with how I feel about them. When/where are you playing next?! Would love to come and hear you, you have exquisite taste!
Ah thank you mate 🙏 I'm really glad we're connecting with the music there. I can see why you had Ten 44 down as a Red Alert & Slammer tune...there's very much an 'In Effect' thing going on in the drums. I'm starting to feel the pull of some potential live sets in future ... I can feel it in the air 😎 You'll be the first to know here in this channel when that happens, that's for sure. Thanks for tuning on again pal 👊
Jake, I’m from 🇬🇧, on a business trip , back tomorrow … Listening to this in 🇩🇪 , what a fantastic bit of work you have done here , Very informative & a great listen / watch. You have obviously spent a lot of time listening to Slipmatts music. More D.J’s pls . How about RSR - Ramos Billy Hunter Force and styles Dougal To name a few. All the best with your incredible channel brother, M (South West crew !.)
Hi mate, thanks for the lovely comment and support 👊 Other DJ's definitely to come in future...as always, as much as can be reflected by the records I've bought and loved over the years 🙏😎
Thanks Jake, Can’t wait… I’m hooked , can’t wait for the next video. Loved the Comment from Mr Slip Matt himself, I reckon you should try and get a DJ In - and a Q & A with them , Much love ,
Cheers mate, yes it was quality of Matt to chime in. Been lucky here so far with that...Mike Wells (Force Mass Motion) and Basement Phil also came into the comments on their videos. It's a lovely community 🙏❤
I got a copy from a little charity shop in fleetwood whilst on holiday to Blackpool.didnt even know what SMD was although I was into the music.needless to say when I got home and played it had a big grin on my face!😃
Met him in slammin vinyl once or twice. Seemed decent enough. Don't really think these are guys worth idolising but they definitely did wonders for their craft and passion. The guys at slammin vinyl set me on a musical journey as like a 13 year old kid trying to make music. DJ'd at my first rave at the age of 17 coz of these guys. United Dance Bagleys. Amazing. Very much a dream for a kid like me. Thinking back now it's bizarre. Bagleys was the theatre of dreams for those of us who could only listen to tape packs and yet there i was on the decks at an illegal age 😂
Yes mate 👍 To be fair, I personally think very few people in life are to be idolised. Admired, inspired by, loved for what they may do or be...but never put up on some pretend pedestal. Cheers for sharing your memories there...awesome experience for you back then 🙏😊❤️
You sure are cranking them out Jake! 🙌🏻 Love the idea of you featuring a DJ as well as all the labels you are covering. And what a legend Slipmatt is. Still going too, playing out everywhere and doing his Slip's House podcast. 'Party Tools' is such a bang on description for so many of his tunes. Man knows a dance floor for sure. Actually saw SL2 doing a live PA way back in 1991. I have so many of the records you featured here and they were all getting hammered at parties and on tapes we were blasting the first couple of years I left home. What memories. Still remember seeing On A Ragga Tip on Top Of The Pops haha 😆 Way In My Brain will always hold a special place in my heart though. Bloody brilliant and one of my favourites from that era. In fact it'd be hard to pick a true favourite from all the ones you played here. So many belters. Thanks for another cracking episode man! ✌🏻
My favourite video so far!! Many a amazing memories dancing my heart out to all these tracks. When I first heard SMD1 I was blown away!! The other samples missed in SMD 3 were Mig 29 and Hocus Pocus (magical trance mix) Can’t wait for the next instalment Jake!!
Glad RU-vid suggested you in my feed…..love your passion,I grew up throughout some of the best music and great nights out,it was funny when you played the first SMD track I have it on while label never knew who it was…I started my raving day’s at shroom in Streatham and my weekly club eventually became Rage.So lots of this stuff was dropped there.I got wrapped up in the whole thing eventually ended running a small record label through the 90s as raving and sitting in a home studio making music I liked going out to was much better than working a proper job for a living…….i must admit my breakbeat part of my record collection isn’t big but my old skool collection of house music i still love, unfortunately I had a stroke 3 years ago that makes it extremely hard to play on my decks now losing the use of my right hand getting records out the sleeve is a bugger lol but still can make music on my iPad,I feel sorry for the people who never got to experience those times .HARDCORE YOU KNOW THE SCORE
