Georges Prêtre conducts Ravel's Boléro Rai National Symphony Orchestra (Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai) at his first symphonic concert. Turin, 1994
Because the music is constantly the same in rhythm throughout the piece there is no need to wave the baton for beat purposes. This brilliant conductor uses the occasion to use his facial expressions to take over. BRAVO to this exceptional conductor!!!
George Pretre took this old warhorse and made it refreshingly new and exciting again. Perfect pace and tempo. Too many conductors rush through as some musicians play the same 20 notes over and over for 16 minutes. It needs to he slow, languid, sensual feeling and sensing every tonal layering and slowly reaching the climatic end. A perfect performance is when you feel like reaching for a cigarette afterwards.
Siamo abituati a Bolero quasi marziali o aggressivi.
I suggest comparing with LSO conducted by Abbado one (which is the first symphonic concerto i've ever seen, at age of 4. But i must agrre with youm, Pretre's conducting and interpretation were wonderful). best regards from Italy
One of the greatest performance of this piece. Appropiately unique. My impression is that Pretre's movement contains nothing unnecessary. He doesn't show anything orchestra members can make themselves while inspirating them.
Mr Georges Pretre is excellent in his conducting the way he sways and justates his movements are just perfect a joy to watch music is perfect thank you
Eccezionale. GrazieGeorge
Trivia: at 10:36 the first oboist from left is Carlo Romano, the original oboist of 'L'oboe di Gabriele' (film score of the 'The Mission' movie) by Ennio Morricone
Ravel's Bolero is always a work you love, or hate. Often it depends on who is conducting. According to Ravel the work should last "about" sixteen minutes. We can't be sure of what the composer wanted, since his recording and in his concerts, the composition was played "about" right. As the work became wildly popular, while he was still alive, Ravel was said to have liked it less. Some modern conductors have less respect for the score. Thus, we hear players given a few effects that are not in the score. Pretre follows the score. His rendition may be closer to the original, but we can not be sure. Pretre always gets what delights his soul. He is an original that imitates no one. Still conducting at ninety-two.
