Ravel n'écrivit pas après coup une réduction pour piano de la musique pour orchestre et choeur du ballet Daphnis et Chloé, mais il commença à peu près en même temps, en 1909, la composition des deux partitions, achevant celle pour piano le 1er mai 1910 déjà et terminant celle pour orchestre et choeur le 5 avril 1912. D'une redoutable difficulté technique, la version pour piano seul de Daphnis et Chloé, dont la vidéo permet d'entendre la troisième partie, est interprétée ici par Claire-Marie Le Guay.

This piano version was written by Ravel himself. He completed it in April 1910, that is almost two years before the orchestral version.

What a pianist Ravel must have been! This music is truly virtuosic. Everything Ravel wrote for piano goes "over the edge" but it is a case of a technique measuring up to the divine inspiration of the music that poured out of the supernal imagination of the "otherworldly" Maurice. With Ravel I run out of superlatives!

Actually, by concert pianist standards, Ravel was mediocre (and he knew it), unlike say Debussy. However, this is all relative, and he could play most of his works kind of "satisfactorily" (except Scarbo and the Toccata from his Tombeau de Couperin!). A composer can write exquisitely conceived piano works, which are exceedingly difficult to play well, without being at all a "great pianist"...

The piece is performed by the French pianist Claire-Marie Le Guay.

This version written by Ravel is for one piano. The popular transcription for 2 pianos is by Vyacheslav Gryaznov.

Je ne peux malheureusement pas donner ici une adresse directe. On peut toutefois aller sur le site "Sheet Music Archive" et, dans l'emplacement "Search", faire une recherche avec les mots "Daphnis et Chloé". Ce qui conduit à divers liens, dont l'un s'intitule "Ravel, Maurice: Daphnis et Chloé - Complete Piano Score" et permet de télécharger la partition entière (et pas seulement la 3e partie) pour piano seul.

Daphnis et Chloe is my (almost) all time favorite piece of music, and as a piano player I would love to find the solo score. It's just very difficult to find. Anyone know where this score can be found, even purchased?

imslp.org/wiki/Daphnis_et_Chloé_(Ravel,_Maurice) The vocal score is the complete ballet, with all the orchestral music arranged for piano by Ravel. The vocal lines (ah-ah-ah!) are separate, but for many parts, this doesn't matter. I don't know why there isn't a complete recording of this. It's a solid 45 minutes of piano music by Ravel! There's also a link there to three excerpts, set by Ravel for piano solo. I've heard these played. Lovely. To answer "Zeke," above, so far everything I've heard is doable by two hands. I've played some of this myself, either slowly and deliberately, or up to speed and "shredding" all the way.

Cette partition a été publiée aux éditions Durand. On peut l'acheter ou la commander sans problème auprès de commerces spécialisés. Sur l'Internet, un ou deux sites la proposent même sous la forme d'un fichier "PDF" téléchargeable gratuitement.

This is obviously not the Maltempo transcription. It sounds simpler and, very frankly, I am able to hear what Ravel wrote in much more simpler way. The Maltempo is magnificent, but it is a virtuoso version of what Ravel wrote. Very frankly, it is written for upper-level concert pianists. This version is much more playable and simply presents Ravel's inspiration without the virtuoso clatter that the Maltempo version presents. Where in the hell is this version available? Right now, I am attempting a simplification of the Maltempo version for my own abilities. It sounds scandalous, but I just want to be able to enjoy the Ravel masterpiece with my own fingers and not wait for some upper-level concert pianist to perform the Maltempo version to glimpse the Ravel paradise he wrote one day in 1910.

J'ai déjà cherché dans le web mais je ne trouve aucun partition pour le piano seul. Je trouve piano avec les voixes, ou le piano à 4 mains, ou pour duex pianos... si tu veux tu peux m'écrire en privé l'adresse.

Of course it is better for orchestra, it is probably the greatest orchestral work ever written! However, Ravel's sound vision of love transcends one instrument or seventy. The intimacy of the piano sound grabs the soul deeply where the orchestral sound grabs the soul dramatically. With Ravel it is sincerity, it is intensity, it is authenticity. Ravel's work is the greatest orchestral piece ever written and to be able to touch the heart of Daphnis et Chloe with my piano fingers is the most sublime experience of my life.

Ça sonne fort bien - normal, c'est du Ravel - mais enfin la version pour deux pianos sonne encore bien mieux et avec beaucoup plus d'ampleur. Ce qui est pour le moins bienvenu, s'agissant du plus grand orchestre que Ravel ait écrit.

Well,"Lever du jour"is beautiful,"Pantomime"not bad,but"Danse générale"not successful at all as played here.To make it work would take some pianistic re-distribution and a seasoned master of complex writing such as M-A Hamelin(for instance).This is an obvious struggle for the player here.The clarity and some lack of body in the sound might suggest a Yamaha was used?Very interesting to hear. Thank you.

I think there is no weakness in the "Danse generale". Yes, it isn't pianistic and quite a challenge to play. But the pianist goes beyond good and gives a dramatic, clearly played performance of generally an unpianistic score.

The Maltempo version adds a whole new level of complexity to this already impossible Ravel piece. I am attempting to play it and realize that given my shortcomings, I need to rewrite the arrangement to be able to play it. It will not be a simplified version, I will attempt to play the notes Ravel wrote and leave out the Maltempo concert version aspect to the arrangement. Of course, if I were up to the Maltempo version, I wouldn't touch it. It was beautifully done. However, I want to play it to approach what Ravel wrote, given my shortcomings. Maltempo wrote this arrangement as a concert version of the piece requiring a technique beyond me and many other Ravel lovers.
