RAVEN Cannons - Future Tank Weaponry

RAVEN (Rarefaction Wave Gun) cannons are pretty obscure. They've seen some pretty limited development in past few decades, but they seem somewhat promising as weapons for light tanks and armored vehicles. If I had to explain them really simply, they're basically spicy recoilless rifles. Will future tanks use them as main guns? I honestly have no idea.
I tried to slow down while talking for this one, hopefully I'm easier to understand.

Hey question, you said the recoil isn't always the same. Could they combine the plasma charge (from a previous video you did) along with the RAVEN cannon? I assume yes, but this would lead to having to externally mounting that as well, unless oscillating turret.

@@Spookston True but complexity and expense are marginal drawbacks when compared to increased combat effectiveness. Also in your ETC video you didn't talk about how the crew might troubleshoot or field repair anything. So if something goes wrong with the ETC is it just caput until they get back to base?

@@mr.normalguy69 looks like a good ifv for urban combat with terrain traversal. In a demon filled world where terrain is very uneven due to all the destruction and you want to support the troops in the massive crumbling cities and prevent them from being slaughtered by demons both big and small then this seems like a viable option, especially since argent energy can provide its power (the biggest hurdle mechs face in fiction). Also tanks would have alot of issues in the environments you see in doom eternal, a legged mech would work very well with the narrow streets and rubble. The only critique I have is the lack of hands on this mech. If it fell over it would have to use its gun barrels to get back up, and also hands gives it some melee potential (many demons do like melee), and allows it to also help in support roles.

"We don't want another M-16 situation on our hands." The M-16s jamming problem came about because troops were provided with ammunition that didn't reach the correct pressure requirements. This made the weapon jam when it was just BARELY dirty. It didn't jam because people didn't clean it. Edit: I had incorrect information. The Powder used during Vietnam (Ball Powder) had greater pressure and burned slower. When the powder was changed it went from firing 750ish rpm, to 1,000 rpm, which wore the guns out faster. The powder burned slower which ment it was still burning when the bolt was opening, this caused it to foul more quickly. Troops were also told the gun would rarely ever need to be cleaned, & there was a shortage of cleaning supplies for the weapon to boot.

@signorUebelst
@signorUebelst 4 года назад
okay two things: First as far as I know early recoilless rifles were a developed as anti tank weapons in the interwar period (between WW1 and WW2) because they allow for heavier projectiles and heavier propellant loads, without makeing the weapon to heavy to be man portable. But that could just be an alternative interpretation of information. Secondly while watching this I got an interessting idea: Should the canon be ale to with stand it and the recoil absorbtion be felxible enough a RAVEN canon could use a variable delay on the opening of the breach vent to change the muzzel velocity in correspondence to the used projectile or the prefered fireing arc. This could with the cannon being mounted the right way and specialised ammonition allow for things like indirect fire or allow air burst ammonition a bigger degree of flexebility of when it bursts as now another variable can be changed, not only the time after fire but also the speed at which the projectile travels. Naturally this all depends on the tollerances in the system.

One of the major differences between more traditional recoilless systems and these RAVEN systems is the weight. Recoilless guns can get away with being made lighter because a significant portion of the expansion stress is negated by the open vent. This in turn allows the weapons to be mounted on lighter platforms or carried by infantry. The RAVEN weapons breech and barrel need to be sturdy enough to withstand the entirety of the expansion pressure, and do so until the system cycles enough to open the vents. This leaves these components needing to be almost as resilient as more traditional cannons, which in turn leaves them weighing a comparable amount.
@aguywhodoesntexist

I saw a really great concept being studied in the 1980s of using liquid propellants. Either single liquid (monogol) or dual (duogol). The advantages are many: The liquid tanks can be fitted conformally and be any shape for better volumetric efficiency and a liquid will have a longer and cleaner burn accelerating the round more linearly. More muzzle velocity too. But I've never heard anything come of it.

About the fouled up part, RAVEN cannons can still foul up significantly from where the exhaust gases are vented. As for the costs. It's not only that the system costs more overall because of its complexity, but also the afformentioned need for special turrets for the RAVEN cannons to be used. This means that RAVEN cannons have the issue of modularity for a lot of existing vehicles since mounting RAVEN cannons means the hull it's mounted on needs to be reinforced to withstand the mentioned backblast

Take a look at Metal storm. Uses the concept of superposed ammunition in a single barrel (which has been around for 500 years) and electronic ignition. You can adjust rate of fire to be anything since no action required. Why its not being exploited much, it does seem to be one of the avenues for future weapons, and would be a great light weight system for scifi armor since you can just drop the tube when you have expanded your ordnance.

I could see these being more popular during WW2 where missiles were almost unheard of on aircraft and 75s were mounted on naval aircraft but they almost brought the plane to a complete stop when fired sometimes. I could see them replacing the machine guns on today's aircraft with these however. Having a high ROF recoiless AA flak gun would be useful in a dog fight.

One of the most effective weapons in close support and for hunting down unlawful combatants has shown to be a medium caliber autocannon on a stable platform. Like the Apache with its 30mm chaingun. Drones work too but a hellfire is very expensive and not very versatile, but drones are generally to light to support a 30mm autocannon. But they could likely use something like Rheinmetall 30mm recoilless autocannon (RMK30). And it even have a higher muzzle energy than conventional 30 mm autocannons making precision strikes easier.

In my research for my future-history setting, heat mitigation can be easier than it looks if you are willing the shell out the cash to do so. Remember those 'red copper' pans? You can use similar composite material for gun barrels. In addition, it is becoming apparent that armor is going to go a similar route as Battletech's, given the fact that a composite metal foam pretty much replicated the properties of the structural material 'EndoSteel'. Due to this, it is highly likely that we'll see armor similar to Battletech's sooner rather than later.

You could make the breech opening more consistent, by implementing burst disks calibrated to perforate when the desired barrel pressure is reached. This avoid the need to have a recoiling assembly that is precisely calibrated, although you would probably still want one so as to facilitate ejection of an obturating stub. Plus, just because recoil is reduced to 40% does not mean that the residual recoil is negligible. Tank guns have extremely high recoil because they impart very high kinetic energy. So a muzzle brake as well as a recoil damper is still required. The complexity of turret design will militate against any weight savings. While an oscillating turret is an option, they tend to be heavier than simple mantlet designs. From what I have seen, some turret proposals for high elevation turrets involved a crane arm that could raise the barrel above the turret when elevating. This would require a cleft turret. After all the systems integration, armouring of the venturi (it will have to be at least resilient to 155mm shell splinters), and turret design, I doubt that it will be much lighter than a closed breech gun. Of course as you say, the advantage would be in mounting these guns to much lighter vehicles with much smaller turret rings and bearings than would otherwise be possible. But armies across the world have largely abandoned airborne or amphibious vehicles. The armouring imperative has grown vehicle combat weights way past 25 tons, which is already considered to be the upper limit possible with vehicle masses that can still be amphibious. You can cheat by raising vehicle height, or using a swimming skirt to increase displacement but armies have mostly turned to integrated pioneer / engineering corps with bridgelayers instead. So the need for RAVEN in light vehicles is also starting to be eroded. Just about the only application that I can envision for a RAVEN system would ironically be in a rapid fire medium calibre role employed for short range AAA. The lower barrel heating and reduced recoil would greatly reduce the weight of turret systems for slewing the turret. In the AAA role there is usually no infantry to be concerned with backblast. And being able to fire larger calibres (or saboted rounds at higher velocity) can give much greater effective range. A rapid fire 105mm RAVEN system firing saboted projectiles like the OTO Melara Super Rapid Vulcano 76mm at 1200+ m/s would be ideal to deal with drones out to 3km+, and can interdict cruise missiles or low flying aircraft. And it would have inherent self defense against other ground forces, although it would be vulnerable to tanks. But with a lot of armed forces leaving SHORAD to missiles, even that role might not be open to such a gun system.

Bit off topic here but what do you think about the XS1 Goliath from COD:AW ? or most of the vehicles seen in there?, mostly interested in the Goliath because that can not only withstand heavy gunfire it can also withstand a rocket engine going off and still being able to keep the pilot safe from the scorching heat.

Maybe they can somewhat compensate for the back blast by making a funnel at the back funneling upwards, so atleast the infantry are saf-er, but it will be hell to use in thicc jungles.

Could you talk about that explosive reactive armor(ERA) isn't the be all and end all of tank armor for the fact that you could harm any infantry support near you in a combined arms warfare.

isn't it possible to vent the backblast upwards? to minimize the risks for the people taking cover behind it, or does doing that drop the gun performance ?

How about MLRSs or Multi Launch Rocket Systems for tanks where you have one or two shoe box sized containers filled with mini rockets launch from a tank. Basically you start with an initial launch stage then after sometime the second dispersion stage starts giving a shotgun effect.

Rheinmetall developed a recoil-less 30mm revolver gun for use on attack helicopters and they put one on a "Wiesel" tanquette for testing. (Which shows up in the "Armored Warfare" game.) What astonishes me about it is that apparently the thing has a higher muzzle energy than the GAU-8. No idea how that is possible with a recoil-less gun.
@antalz
@antalz 4 года назад
How do you mount this thing? You can't rigidly affix it to a turret, it'll blow itself right off the trunions when you fire because it's not recoilless. So it has to be able to recoil. But if it recoils, how are you going to vent all the gas to the outside? Is there some magical super-tubing I'm unaware of? Mount the thing on the outside of the vehicle you say? Then how will you load it?
@samhansen9771

I wonder if you could make a recoilless rifle that uses a smooth cartridge case that shoots out the back from the pressure when it fires so that it temporarily increases the chamber pressure a bit and prevents the problem of back blast by only firing back a single large object that can be deflected up to lose its momentum. Obviously the main problems would be reliably "extracting" and the added length at the rear of the gun for the case to travel through long enough to keep the chamber pressure up.
@MrQuantumInc
@MrQuantumInc 4 года назад
Sounds like an attempt to create a mid-point between a conventional heavy gun and a recoiless gun, combining the advantages of both, but also the disadvantages. I would assume the mount allows the barrel to travel a great distance such that the barrel is moving backward the whole time the projectile is moving within the barrel and keep moving while it vents after and only stops once the projectile and most of the gas is gone.

Any possibility of RAVEN small-arms in the future? If you can safely vent the gasses from the chamber of a machine gun, or one-handed SMG, you could have a lot more power with a lot more control. The mechanics of doing that with rapid fire might be complicated, though.

I think merging ETC cannon with RAVEN canon is the way to go. In ETC cannon one can use much more powerful explosives, which leads to more stress, thicker barrel and so on. RAVEN technology can reduce stress on the barrel of the gun, and requires more precise burning time, which ETC technology can provide. Each technology is reducing drawbacks of the second one. Electromagnetic gun on a tank is far future.
