That EF-111A Raven 66-0016 is one of 4 that still survives after they were take out of service in 1998 and is on display at Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico.

There is an old F-111 bomber, I think it is just a bomber, on static display at an airport in Brown Wood, Texas. My NCARNG unit 1/130th ARB was flying and training there when an F-4 , not the Phantom, Tornado, not the jet fighter, came through and tossed one of our AH-64D around like a toy. Our tents were torn to hell. This ten years ago. God where has time gone...

I have seen that documentary as well but I have to agree with you about this being more nitty gritty. I did feel the History Channel documentary was being a bit smug about it all and did not really convey the danger the crew were in nor how their skills helped them achieve success. With this telling of the story you actually felt that they deserved their medals.

That show was terrible. But I’m still a little confused here. Was the Mirage effected by the Raven’s engines or did it clip the ground die to the low-level flying?

For anyone wondering how this event counted as an aerial victory, it is classified as a manuvering kill where your opponent crashes out of the fight. Another type of unusual kill is where the enemy pilot is seen to jump or eject before the plane is actually attacked.

My dad was an RAF Electronic Warfare specialist and campaigned actively with the M.O.D. for the EF111. He rated it as the finest ECM aircraft in the world. He spent much of his time with the Raven crews, envious of their fine aircraft. Sadly, the RAF declined his many requests for a review of their EW capabilities. Another great story Mark.

Would this be the aircrew who didn't fire a shot in anger, but then went on to write a book about it? Mmmmmmm Oh and the navigator went on to be wheeled out on the media for god knows how long afterwards, talk about milking it when you actually haven't scored any kills...... The navigator's brother was a CT in the RAF, a bloke who'd like to live off his other brothers 'fame'. A right cock a doodle.

I was stationed at Upper Heyford U.K. in the late 80's. My unit boasted the F-111E Aardvark, an excellent strike bomber which later participated in Desert Storm out of Turkey. There was also an EF-111 unit at our base. Didn't see them very often, but they were beauties with the two toned gray paint scheme and all. I was in Korea on F-16's when the war broke out but heard of Heyford's action in the conflict and felt proud that I had recently been one of their airmen.

Check out Charles Lamb’s “War in a Stringbag” where in a similar situation he duped two Italian fighters into a diving attack on his Swordfish at low level and they end up flying into the sea. In the same boom he mentions a similar case in training in the Caribbean where, during training, a Skua crashed int the sea doing a dummy attack on a Swordfish.

Another great story you've dug up. It was only the Australians that really appreciated the capabilities of the F-111, keeping 24 examples flying until 2010 by using the aircraft retired by USAF in 1996 as sources for spares. It's only the introduction of the F-35 into Australian service that will restore just some of the capabilities the RAAF had with the F-111.
