Ravne na Koroškem is the civic, the economic and the cultural centre of the Mežiška valley. The town is located next to the lower parts of the river Meža, beneath the mighty mountain Uršlja gora. The town is well known for its centuries old ironworks traditions, and was known under the name Guštanj up until the end of the second World War. The name Guštanj was documented for the first time in the year 1248. At that time a typical medieval square began to develop next to the old antique road and the confluence of the river Meža and the stream Suha. Today the frame of the old town centre is presented by the church of St. Egidij, together with the preserved old houses in the Stara ulica (Old Street) and in the square Trg svobode (Freedom square).
