+Smaughunter Wasn't aware of that either actually... I was mainly feeding my dog gizzards and tripe for their organ % because he doesn't seem to handle liver well (especially beef). He gets sick sometimes, possibly because he can't handle the amount given to him. It's a hit or miss, so I'm always nervous to give it to him. Now I guess I need to look for a different organ that won't upset his stomach... Any recommendations that you could give that may be more gentle for him?

Ve Mo liver does have to make up 5% of the secreting organ content in a balanced raw diet because it is an essential source of vitamin A but there may be some tweaks you can make so that your dog won't get sick. You might try feeding smaller quantities of liver at a time, one tiny piece each meal and you may try different protein liver such as chicken or pork liver. Your second 5% organ content should be kidney, sweetbreads, or spleen. Sweetbreads are very mild and contain enzymes so they might be a good choice for you.

Smaughunter Thanks for the tips! I actually found a butcher that also produces dog food and the mix I'm getting contains heart, chicken with chicken heads, and an organ blend, so I'm assuming that will have things like kidneys, spleen, etc. It doesn't list the organs since I'm sure they just add whatever they have on hand. I also picked up some beef liver today and will take your advice! I gave him just 3 tiny chunks of some tonight and will give him a couple pieces every meal. Hope my poor buddy does better this time around. I'll also check out the Facebook group for sure! :) Thanks!!

Salmon oil is great, regular fish oil capsules (typically still salmon lol) Krill oil, sardines, All great for dogs coat! I love coconut oil too. That's what I use as an extra fat source in my dog's diets. The coconut oil gets them shiny QUICK!

This can be done for cats to, just a little different combo, but they too can eat raw.

@Millenial Picasso raw is more expensive but if you think about how many issues kibble can cause and the vet bills associated, the cost evens out.

I don’t believe in so much meat in the diet. I had a few litters of Rottis and although I live by a Slaughterhouse and have everything imaginable, I would only feed meat 2-3 times a week. It’s more a treat than as a stable to the diet. A one sided diet for humans as well as Dogs is boring. I don’t agree with Many Whom are on this RAW food tick, although it’s been around for Decades. Now it’s Fashionable until Folks realize how EXPENSIVE it is. I use the Fresh diet. Meaning just that, fresh veggies, meat, fish, fish oil, muscle meat, rice, eggs, eggshells, and kibble. I try to keep it balanced and interesting. But a pure meat diet, is too expensive, and unhealthy for the dog. When starting the pups to eat whole food I started with a Brei, with ground meat, veggies, rice, an egg, and oatmeal or cream of wheat. Then at 6-8 week’s gradually giving them bigger pieces, causing them to chew their food. I find that the food aggression comes from them trying to gulp down all they can as fast as They can. It comes from the Wolf. That shouldn’t be reinforced. I also used to put my hand in the food, to show that it wasn’t going away, and that I was the Alpha. Although Many New Owners will want to feed the same food as the Breeder, this is unrealistic because of the costs, and regardless of how careful You are in selecting the New Owners, fact is not all the Pups will be eating a Raw diet. A hundred bucks for meat, and kibble, should last almost 2 months. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but You will need a freezer, which enables You to buy what’s on sale and freeze it. The idea with proportioning the meat is very good. I would place portions into baggies and freeze them. When I wanted to feed liver, chicken, hearts, beef, horse, goat, or whatever I’d thaw it out and serve it. It’s all about PREPARATION. Beef spare ribs would never be on Their Menu, but mine. They would get the bones. Also try finding a Calcium powder, or making it from ground eggshells. See the Fresh diet is actually more time consuming but the whole food groups are covered and it’s less expensive. Have fun and never stop learning.

Margo Young yes you should it's way healthier then kibble I've read and any kind of kibble makes dogs teeth look all nasty. You can feed your dog raw chicken feet, raw duck feet or raw duck necks those can help for your dog to be chewing on it and it will clean his/her teeth

Jim VanDersnooth I think the reason that is OK is because the wolves are eating the whole body of the rabbit, the organs the bones, the hair, and everything.....which is I think what makes that a balanced diet as long as in the different seasons they change their prey selection to make up for anything.

+Jimmy Stole I'm so happy you were able to get some good info from this video!! Honestly, we believe that if you're feeding them a balanced diet, a variety of muscle meats, raw bones, and organs.. they don't need much else as far as probiotics and vitamins. We do give our dogs "Bully Max" which is a supplement for working breeds because we work them out a lot so anything they are not getting from their meals they get from this. They get all their other needed nutrients from their food. The dry food we give them also has that stuff added in there as well. Everyone's needs are different though so your dogs might need a little something extra. We unfortunately are not very educated on what else to give them as our dogs have been perfectly fine with what we give them. I'm sorry!

I've been feeding raw for 10 years kudos to you for being such a great fur mom HOWEVER I'm concerned about the red meat bearing bones like the short ribs and the soup bones. I've always read/been told the only edible bones are chicken bones as they break down easily in the stomach and the meat bearing bones should only be used for for chew bones and not to be digested. Have you ever had any issues with the beef bones being feed? Where did you get your guidance for feeding the red meat bones. I'm always looking to learn more!

+Christie Lynn Ballin-Fox hey love!! Thank you for the wonderful comment! The way bones work is all are okay as long as they are raw. The only issues you can have with feeding bones is when they get cooked. Beef bones are actually the only ones that could be fed after being cooked. Chicken and pork bones splinter like wood when they get cooked so they can pierce their insides. As far as raw bones all of them are perfectly fine to be broken up and digested. Think about how wolves eat in the wild. They eat all the bones from every kill they make! We have been feeding them raw beef bones since they were able to eat raw meat and have never had a single issue!

if you go to a local butchers it'll be 100 times cheaper than it is to buy from a local super store.

Giovanny Melendez my friend started her dog on a raw diet,having heard my entire life that raw meat has too much bacteria and raw chicken has salmonella in it .I felt compelled to look into this... I turned to ASPCA and it actually has raw meat raw eggs bones & COCONUT oil on their list under POISON CONTROL NUMBER??... I see her point they are related to wolves but there has been a lot of generations gone by how do we know that our dogs still produce a large amount of acid to handle the bacteria?? Maybe the domestication of dogs over years caused the amount of acid to lessen... Idk... I was looking into it but I've def Decided against it .. I'll keep cooking my chicken...

i know your comment was a year ago but Blue brand dog food has got many recalls and known to be poor quality and misleading ingredients. I know this from personal experience. check out dogfoodadvisor.com if you choose to stay on dry food.

+Nasay Jones they love their chicken gizzards! They're essential in their diet as one of the organs that we always give them. Gizzards and hearts are staples in their diet. Nyi will eat them fresh but Drogon will only eat them if they're frozen. But they are very good for them they get a lot of their daily nutrients from the organs that we give them! I would highly suggest adding organs into your pups diet. You can't feed raw and expect to be giving a balanced meal without a balance of muscle meats, organs, and raw bones. As far as pork goes, we stay away from it with raw meat. We will give them pigs ears or rolls but that's the only part of the pig we give them. That's just personal preference and you should do a little research on giving raw pork meat. Our opinion is that pigs are filthy animals and wolves even stay away from pigs in the wild. But yea, I would just look into that and form your own opinion. There are plenty of people who feed raw that have no problem giving raw pork, and plenty of people who think like we do. So that's up to you and what works for your family!

makaela harris Dogs/wolves do not need vegetables or fruits whatsoever. They are carnivores. Feeding fruits and veggies is optional but not required by any means. And omegas should be added through supplement or oily fish such as salman, mackerel, or sardines.

E and the double P's dogs are actually omnivores. Cats are true carnivores. Dogs in the wild are opportunistic and eat whatever they can find that they like. Personally, my dogs and cats actually like a wide variety of foods including fruits, veggies and even breads. They can have all they want except only a tiny bit of bread occasionally. My dog loves apples, squash, pumpkin, spinach, i havent seen him refuse anything! Ive had cats who love peas, corn, green beans, cantaloupe, broccoli, noodles, and of course anything milk based!

Dogs and wolves to eat the stomachs of their prey which do have other food groups in them. It's a small portion of their diet but they do eat other things. The food in the stomach is digested so that's another thing to think about. I don't think raw vegetables is good for dogs. Uncooked carrots come out whole!

@@RachelBliss821 The only time wild canines eat the stomach of an animal is when its a small animals like a rabbit and the stomach is too small to not eat. The stomach acids burn so why would a wolf or coyote, or fox stick their face in that? Wildlife observation teams also report that wolves will shake out the stomach contents of large prey and only eat the lining.

I haven’t actually started raw diets yet but how would you calculate for the fish on that day, like percentage wise? I was thinking BARF 70/10/10/10 (lean meat, veggies+fruit, organ, bone) but haven’t actually found enough research stuff for fish, supplements, and eggs.

Brylee’s Betta’s when it comes to prey model raw fed diets, the heart counts as a muscle meat as it is not a secreting organ. It’s also worth mentioning that green tripe is also counted as meat and NOT organ. If anyone wishes to feed tripe, green tripe is the only useful choice. The normal tripe you find in stores that is bleached has no nutritional value and will just be a waste of money. Bigger pieces of meat are best. Avoid ground meat as much as possible. It’s chewing and gnawing the meat that cleans the teeth, not the bones. Do NOT feed turkey necks only. It’s no issue until it is - there are many people who have lost their dogs to choking on these very easy choking hazards. Beef soup bones are absolutely horrible, and only useful if you wish to make bone broth. Do not use weight bearing bones from large animals. You will crack your dogs teeth with these. There is a lot of good information out there if people are actually open to education on it. Sadly this persons video is not really educational as they are learning themselves.
