Hi, my workflow with this Ms-20 is usually: mess with the first patch until I'm happy, record it, then start to mess with the second track and so on. It's very much impulsive so I rarely write down all the pots/wires. I think part of the fun with analog synths is the uniqueness and un-reproducibility of the sound :)
Lol, I don't remember where I saw a guy with cables going from fruits and vegetables to Eurorack modules, I thought it was funny doing the same with the wobbling head of judgemental Beethoven :D
I listen to this track a couple times a day. I'm absolutely obsessed with the sound of that main bass riff. I've always wanted an MS-20 and this might have just put me over the edge. Do you happen to remember roughly how to make that patch? Did you feed the output back into the external audio input to get it to sound that overdriven and filthy?
Hey thanks, I might try again to create this sound but I'm scared to realize I can't lol. But I can tell you a few points that I remember: 1) 99% of the times I indeed feed the output into the ext signal input because it filthens the sound in a very nice way. 2) The biggest part of the sound are the two filters with the resonance very high and the frequency knobs moved by hand by just a few millimeters around the sweet spot (aka, making the sound scream without actually touching the resonance point, which would go crazy because of its high gain. So you arrive almost there, caressing that point, if this all makes sense lol). 3) I checked the cubase project and I noticed that the deep lowend didn't come straight from the ms-20 as is, but rather from Izotope Neutron added in the insert of the recorded audio. Specifically, I've used Neutron's Exciter module to drive the lows and low-mids quite a bit. If I bypass the plugin the sound looses its deep power, while keeping its typical aggressive character. I hope this helps :)
Oh yes that helps a lot, thanks! I'll probably just try the exciter in a multi FX pedal or maybe layer it with my Behringer Neutron for some low end. If I ever manage to recreate it I'll make a patch sheet or description and let you know. I don't own the MS-20, but I think I'll get one in the coming year, It's always been one of those holy grail synths for me.
Hi, yes everything you hear in this track, including kick, fx, hihats and lead is Ms-20 mini. I can't remember the chain of the bass processing, but I probably used compression and eq.
