It is a shame to see this store closing however I got a pretty good video here. Unfortunately in the end, I got kicked out as they do not allow photography here. Also it was not even a Macy's employee that stopped me. It was an employee from the liquidation company

Thank you for documenting this. In a few years from now when department stores will be a thing of the past, this will be an amazing record of what used to be. With less than a day before closing, I'm really surprised at how clean the entire store looks. When our store closed the floors were caked in dirt and grime, since our store's cleaning contract ran out several months before we closed. Thank you again for this professional and detailed look at this store.

The hidden restaurant you discovered was a Sword & Kilt which was an upscale eatery operated by Thalhimer's which was the original anchor. The restaurant was closed and walled up when Thalhimer's was acquired by May Company and converted to Hecht's. The restaurant remained closed for the remainder of time the department store continues operations following the conversion to Macy's.

There was a time when department stores had restaurants. The long-gone Tri-City Mall here in Mesa, AZ had a new look JC Penney. I remember the former fenced in dining patio had its tables and chairs all stacked up after the restaurant was discontinued. The former new look JCP at the old Park Central still stands and is occupied by United Healthcare. The old patio is still there with the same vintage fencing. I know the Sears at dead Fiesta Mall used to have one too. I remember it having food in the 80s. Nordstrom continues to have cafes. The one at Scottsdale Fashion Square is always busy on weekends with hungry shoppers. It also smells really good there, too.

Very cool I'd say you got it documented well. I'm gonna have to ask my mom an sister about that restaurant they spent many weekends there in the 80's. Should have told her yea where part of a mall documentary crew. But regardless you got the good stuff the mechanical on the 3rd floor was cool.

I'm surprised to see GAL fixtures on the freight elevator instead of Otis Lexan. Was the freight elevator installed with GAL?? Or did GAL replace old fixtures??

The Top floor is actually the penthouse. Instead of traditional rooftop HVAC units, they utilized the penthouse for HVAC equipment and Mechanical.

I'm confused, does the liquidation company have the authority to say no photography?
@upanddownadventures

Did you mean to edit out the music? Or are you going to leave it in the raw clip only? Am I correct that a lot of freight elevators (maybe not newer ones) have simple controllers that only remember 1 call at a time? (I think in many cases they don't remember calls with the door open, that often will ring the alarm). Being asked to leave the whole store just because you were filming seems overkill (unless they knew you were in non-public areas, then I could see why, though they likely would have the right to ask you to leave either way). I wonder if they did that because of a particular reason, such as security concerns somehow related to the fast that the store is almost closed (or maybe privacy concerns, though that would be less of a problem if the store was closing). Thankfully I have never had trouble filming the elevators in Macy's stores, but I do know they often don't allow photography.

The people that asked me to leave were from the liquidation company. Not even Macy's. However they were in charge so I had to comply as it is private property. I seriously doubt I was seen as there was no security here any more and all the offices were empty.

They probably didn’t want anyone videos or photos with the liquidation sale because of the item prices. I have never had an issue with a Macys with elevator videos or a livestream.

Many department stores in the past prior to food courts had a nice restaurant inside the store.

Well the music still works I hear Maps by Maroon 5 at 6:56. VERY RUDE sales people at the end saying you can't film, BS, the store is closing, it's not like it's hurting anything. You should be allowed to film. When circuit city was closing the people were the same way.

This is pretty weird that a liquidation employee harassed you when they don't even own or work in the store.

Liquidation employees are often known to be rude for some reason. WallieB26 was treated like dirt at a closing Kmart he went to once by a liquidator.
