I really appreciate this video. I grew up in Alexandria Va on the Highway as a baby to 14 years old and then moved to sterling/ashburn area in 1994. I have always preferred New Balances over anything else. Even as a white cat it was my defining shoe showing that I was glued to the DC culture. I'm 35 now and still have pairs and pairs of 993, 991, 990s. I will always be fresh in a pair of cool grey NewBs!

Just to correct a few foggy memories: We started wearing NB in 1985 with the blue/grey and burgundy/grey 574s then the grey nite-glows in 1986. 996, 997, etc

I use to spend my whole summers in D.C. back in the 80’s and 90’s. Did D.C. wear leather New Balance like that? I remember vaguely but I don’t recall seeing the leather joints being rocked like that. @Curtis Chambers

We were sportn the basketball NB in NYC in 84 .
@abxtale
@abxtale 6 лет назад
You buggn son. The NB 680 basketball, the 991 and the James Worthy's were definitely official in the mid 80s. We were sportn those along with the Top 10 Adidas, then came the Michel Jordans(85), Patrick Ewings (86). NYs sneaker game was sick!!!
@abxtale
@abxtale 6 лет назад
Depending on the year, some Ewings were wack, just like some Jordans were wack just like some NBs were wack depending on the # and style. I specified the 1st editions in 1986 when the Knicks drafted Ewing, when the White with the blue and orange stripe Ewing Adidas first dropped. Those were wack to you? The Basketball NB 991 basketball sneaks(84) were wack to you?
@abxtale
@abxtale 6 лет назад
LOL.... I guess that would make sense since y'all weren't Knick fans back then....Call it a difference in opinion. In the 80s, DC was more into track "tennis shoes" as y'all call em. NY was rockn with track sneakers, but we were more into the basketball look between 83- 88. But in the 2000s with the whole retro thing poppn, I've seen a few DC cats sportin the 86 Ewings in the DMV. And I'm living in PG right now.
@abxtale
@abxtale 6 лет назад
Whoa... Slow down brother. You must mean before everybody within the DMV. Cause y'all definitely wasn't rockn Shell Toe Addidas, Pumas, Timbs nor Air Force 1s. before NY dudes. Your man just said that y'all weren't into the Hip Hop thing back then. And every foot wear you mentioned came from old school Hip Hop culture and fashion. Pumas which I see DC youngnz rockn now along Shell Toes was a B-boy thing dating back to the early 70s in the Bronx. NOBODY was rockn them before us. When y'all started rockn your sneakers or boots with untied loose laces, that's a B-boy thing. And I been in the DMV since 87 LITERALLY!!! So from that point up until present I know exactly what DC was rockn. And it wasn't Shell Toes, And I never seen a cat from DC sport AF1s until Nelly made a song biggn up the shoe. And Nelly out of his own mouth said he got hip to AF1s when he was in NY.
@abxtale
@abxtale 6 лет назад
Yes I brought Nelly to the table. Since it wasn't til he made " 2 pears" in 05 that I started seeing AF1s on DC dudes feet. Even B-more was ahead of y'all. Kinda like y'all knew nothing about Shell toes Til Run DMC made "My Adidas". So cut it out bro, you know where I'm coming from. And you're the one who needs to pay attention to your mans words.Yes he did say DC had it's own style or (the Old code) before Hip Hop infiltrated the area. The same way NY had it's own look. He also said the new generation eventually got with Hip Hop where it open their eyes to different stuff that had nothing do with DC. So the Old style that new DC kids started to follow was NY hip hop fashion. Are we watching the same interview here? And I'm debating with you. So you should post pics or show documentation where DC cats was sportin "AF1s even. SHELL TOE adidas before EVERYBODY"? I guarantee your man don't have pics showing DC dudes sportn the footwear you mentioned before the mid 90s and 2000s. And back in 1982 NBA players from different teams mainly in inner cities were given the 1st AF1s by Nike to promote there new product. Where do you get this Georgetown nonsense from?
