Raw Sea Water Pump Upgrade - Ford Lehman 120HP 6D380-120 (2715)

In this video, I replace/upgrade the OEM Jabsco raw seawater pump with a Johnson ordered from American Diesel Corp. (americandieselcorp.com/). The upgraded pump is a one-piece design, increasing reliability. The AD kit includes a longer oil cooler hose and a small metal pin to block pressurized hot oil, preventing leaks around the gasket. Mating surfaces and the pin get coated with Permatex #2 Sealant.

you were smart to order an upgraded pump. I had Volvo's and Chevy's engines in mine. I always kept an eagle eye on my temp gauges and inspected the filters & pumps. I was lucky & caught the temp slightly high before a trip. I took the pump apart and noticed one fin of the impeller was starting to split. I ordered just the impeller talking with the service desk. when they quoted me the price; i stopped him and said all I wanted was the impeller, not the whole pump. He replied," you've never had a Volvo before have you ?". I could buy the whole pump for the boat with Chev engines for that price. Yes; double clamp all hoses. Like they say about boats = Bring On Another Thousand.

Hi Ray: Great video of changing the raw water pump. We had put a quick release impeller cover on the old pump in Vestri which was much easier to remove when checking or changing the impeller. I am not sure if you can reuse it on the new configuration...but give it some thought. Can't wait for your cruising videos this year. Cheers, Howard

Thanks, I saw the thumb screws. :) I have been exploring the low water temperature issue and pulled out the sender the other day. From what I can tell, the temperature sender installed is an AC Delco used in old GM cars like Corvettes. Likely it is a single gauge sender and not a dual gauge, I think. If that is the case, it would make sense to read low, as the resistance would be off with two gauges. I put it back and going to try disconnecting one of the gauges and see if the temp comes up. If so, I may just install a switch to choose read flybridge or low helm until I can source the correct sender.

Thanks for that information Ray you know that I know very little about boating I did not realize that it was cool with seawater, I would think that would be rough on the system with the salt water going through there through a motor?

There are two cooling systems sea water and fresh with antifreeze coolant mix. Inside the engine they use regular automotive diesel 50/50 mix coolant. The sea water system uses external heat exchangers for engine and transmission oil and fresh water coolant. Here is a diagram of a typical system. boattest.com/sites/default/files/images/2023-10/Screen%20Shot%202023-10-31%20at%204.03.28%20PM.png The fresh water cooling system also is piped to the boat's water heater which has a a built in heat exchanger so when we arrive there is a full tank of hot water.

Oh, I forgot another thing they use screw in sacrificial zinc anodes in the raw water system so they corrode versus the metal in the exchangers. Looks like this amzn.to/4bP1Oo0
