Aerials of the blast zone
This video documents of the totality of destruction in the blast zone.
It starts in one of the valleys on approach to the mountain. The trees are still standing but the river below shows the effects of the mud and debris flows that cascaded off the mountain.
There is some video from inside the cockpit of the helicopter then at 4:20 into the video the copter turns to see the edges of the lahar that had buried much of the valley. Roads can be seen that crisscross the area, now cleared of vegetation.
At 6:00 into the video it becomes completely barren as the copter enters the blast zone.
At 7:00 in to the video the pilots spot the shell of a car, buried in the ash.
7:30 into the clip the hulk of a truck is spotted.
The video continues to survey the area providing the first views of the destruction. Towards the end of the video are glimpses of the peak, still miles away and still steaming.
This is newly restored video from the KGW archives converted to full HD.
It is presented in it's original 4x3 registration.

I spent most of the day picking flowers (people) from the Devil Garden. And any body we could find. I was like being on the dark side of the moon.

Just curious, what day was this filmed? It has been recorded that Reid Blackburn's car was found 4 days after the eruption. That vehicle they discovered was his vehicle. He is inside that vehicle, burned to death. Maybe he was discovered a bit earlier!! Side note, you can hear the rumble of the volcano on the audio!! These videos are gold.

the bridge at 1:13 mark was by my home where me and my family lived. Amazing video.

Where exactly was that? I've been trying for years to figure out the location. I've also been told either the bridge was cut up and removed, or it was buried under the ash that backed up from the levies they built. Can you give me some idea where it is?

@@gracielaw5520 hi. Just east of the sediment retention dam. South side of the river. It has to be buried by mudflow at this point. It was a beautiful bridge that was just east of Umiker Rd on SR 504.

@@james.d.squires1972 Umiker is in Castle Rock though, isn't it? Do you mean the last dam they built, near Mark Smith's property (Eco Park)?

@@gracielaw5520 the old Umiker Rd was on the south side of the river on the other side from Echo Park. I remember our school bus going up that road too. We had the longest bus ride. :)
