The child didn't report the issue to the right person ....... I'm sorry, but EVERY adult in education should be the "right person" to report to. If they cannot do anything about it themselves they sure as heck CAN pass the report forward to someone who can. Unless of course they are part of the problem......
this👏. especially children who don’t understand the structure of massive organizations. They shouldn’t have to understand who is above who in order to report something like this, they should be able to tell an adult they trust and have their claim legitimately investigated. I don’t understand how an adult could try and stop doing something like getting Larry Nassar into a prison.
Every ADULT, not just in education but in the world should have a duty to report sexual abuse of minors if something is disclosed to them. ANY and EVERY human should hold this responsibility, no matter their station in life.

I cannot believe the nerve of that attorney. She had no problem attacking Rachael publicly, but when Rachael pointed out her behavior in court, she objected to it. I hope that attorney's career is ruined by this case. She doesn't deserve any success or fame.

She reported him and nothing was done. What was she supposed to do, take the law into her hand and attack him? Stand on the street corner with a megaphone? You don't seem to understand how corrupt organizations and law enforcement can be. I have been in a horrible situation before, of reporting a case of child abuse, and not being taken seriously, and there is nothing like the feeling of helplessness and hopelessness when you realize that you've reached a dead end, reported it to three different authorities, and no one will do anything.

I did not consider it heroic to report abuse. I considered it my duty. In fact, legally, I was required by my employer to report it (though I would have anyway). I didn't cry about how no one was helping, I simply stated the sad fact that those to whom I reported, who had the legal authority to remove the child from the situation (police and CPS) did nothing. I was not making myself out to be a hero of any kind, I was stating simple facts. It sounds like you have never been in any a situation involving abuse, and have zero empathy for anyone who has, and ZERO understanding of how our society or legal system works and somehow think throwing tantrums and murdering people is the answer to everything. I called you uneducated because you blatantly displayed your ignorance by arrogantly disputing my CORRECT use of the word "survivor." I'm sure you have access to a dictionary. There are so many variables it doesn't matter which one. Some won't even speak out about it ever. Fear is something a child has to overcome to even tell. I know plenty of female adult who still never told there own mother. A abused child is all that needs to be said, that's it God's children know it's not right to harm a child. I believe anyone who hasn't lived it can't have the ability to process the damaged caused. It should never happen no matter what the cause is it's not the child's fault. It’s amazing. It kind of reminds me of how Elizabeth Smart’s mother said when she got rescued ‘Elizabeth what happened to you was terrible. These monsters took 9 months of your life.’ “The greatest revenge you can exact on them is by being happy.” Life is hard and suffering is real, but what spiritual elevation is achieved when we find peace in forgiveness and not in seeking retribution. It is something I am still trying to find in my own life. It is a personal choice and is a long process.
@@MalloryNewcomb Rachael had very stable upbringing and parents who believed her, emotionally intelligent and emotionally mature parents who included her on important discussions. Who gave her space to heal from her ptsd and showed real empathy and compassion for their child. Who was not so brainwashed by a church that they’d just blindly go with what it says. This helped her to see clearly without mental fog and to not normalize abuse. She was also 15 when it happened and not 6 like Kyle stephens. This made a diff in her ability to understand something seemed off. And even Kyle knew something was off but the adults failed her. Rachael’s supportive parents and husband were and are everything as to what made it possible for her to fight the good fight that she fights to this day

I am a physician who has studied psychiatry and impacts of trauma psychiatry on people's development and coping mechanisms later in life. I've taken numerous CME courses on the subject of trauma psychiatry, studied numerous behavioral psychology books and lie detection books amongst others. I have also 20+ years of experience of listening to survivors of childhood abuse and sexual abuse in particular. Even more devastating are the consequences when 1. Its your own parent or sibling that molested you 2. Laws protecting biological parents send known molestation victims back and forth like a ping pong ball to their abusers to get abused again and then thrown back in a shitty shelter again ( i witnessed this happen in 2003 in Florida first hand at a shelter I volunteered at) There is much evidence into how ACES in family of origin can lead to devastating consequences and normalization of things that are not normal leading to repression and suppression of extreme traumas that then manifest in behaviors that are internalized and come out in negative ways. There is much research into how poor family of origin and feeling dismissed unheard unseen leads to really unhealthy behaviors such as borderline behaviors of self harm, over people pleasing and overly stuck state of dissociation and indecisiveness and poor sense of self and identity and boundaries. I've seen these responses in numerous victims who when they were raped and molested even when it was not by their family member they were dismissed and it led to even more devastating consequences. The critical role her parents played in helping her see to her healing and supporting her DID MAKE a huge difference in the personal power and strength of herself. Often times in survivors of child molestation when they are not believed it leads to devastating psychological aftermath in themselves and they are often living their life not thriving but just surviving. This is at the core part of Rachael's central thesis in her memoir of this trial and part of the reason she has stated she stood up to Larry Nassar. She knew she was strong enough to do it but many were not and their voices would never be heard if they did not have someone who had been in a place of healing to step up and make the first moves. This was very CLEARLY stated in another video and numerous interviews by her. SO YES IT MAKES ABSOLUTE DIFFERENCE that her parents BELIEVED HER and SUPPORTED HER!!! People don't just develop strength from thin air and personal will. Their is both external and internal influences that influence our personal power in society and hence forth our ability to function. In the absence of support systems it can get very isolating and lead to even more pain and devastation for a survivor. Just look at the difference of Kyle Stephens story whose father committed suicide and didn't believe his daughter for years. Talk to any number of child molestation survivors on crisis textline or in real life and they will have a very different outlook. Many of them when they are not able to heal before being traumatized again often keep getting traumatized bc psychopaths often sense the vulnerable and choose their targets according to certain traits. They plan methodically to find people in a vulnerable position. Only this time Nassar made a critical error in judgement bc Rachael was neither 5 or 6 like Kyle Stephens, nor was she weak since she grew up in a more mature family environment rather than an unstable one. For reading references on effects of trauma on people who don't have those sort of supports to heal faster, I suggest you look into the work of Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk (Body Keeps the Score), Dr. Petere Levine, their institute NICABM (look up their youtube page here), and Dr. Nicole Le Pera who speaks to Trauma psychiatry at depth. That is just for starters.

It takes real strength of soul to be able to do that. I was floored by that myself. I hope to have a similar moment of my own some day as a Christian who has traumas of her own. ... I want to get to a place where I am able to forgive him enough to want to show him a better way & show despite his religious legalism and profound impact in my life at one time... There is a better way than he has gone. I wish I could have the strength to despite everything he’s done to me show him that God is kinder than you taught me... She is what some of us who’ve faced abuse have never reached and wish we could. A place of power instead of feeling ourselves slowly dying inside as we continue to suffer the consequences of abuse we’ve suffered. The one saving Grace she had is she was not also a victim of parental family of origin abuse and they were emotionally intelligent people which gave her a lot of privilege and ability to heal. What makes her special is that she used that privilege to fight for those who couldn’t knowing others did not have her level of privilege as an attorney and supportive parents and spouse. So many in place of privilege just sit back and look on and move on. She chose to speak up instead of hide it and fight for them which is why I come back to her book so often and her speech so often for inspiration. I often wonder like she once did if my voice will ever be heard for the years of psychological abuse and financial abuse I faced and threats of physical abuse I faced for years til I was driven to extreme ptsd and joblessness
God bless these young women for standing up to stop this. May this never happen again. Rachael was the best person to end this case with. May he rot in jail.

I have been watching almost all of the victim's testimonies and they make me sick. Something has to be done to protect these women, and organizations need to not silence the victims.
For one, they all wrote their thoughts down ahead of time so that they could say everything that they wanted to. They don't look fake AT ALL. If you don't believe a word that they say, you're quite frankly a complete idiot in my eyes. To have the audacity to think that 150 women would lie about sexual assault that stemmed from one man shows your stupidity.
The raw emotion in her voice is one of the most powerful things I've seen. To go through what she went through and have the strength and grace to do what she has done is incredible.

I commend this judge for letting each survivor give a victim impact statement. On my court date I was too scared to give one. It gives me some strength listening to these women speak their truth.

J W it shouldn’t have happened at all. Worse things happened to some of the other victims (watch Kyle’s statement), but just because it wasn’t as bad as it could have been doesn’t make it acceptable. He used his medical patients to satisfy his sexual needs. We need to treat this like other harassment cases. We can’t just sweep it under the rug because it’s “not as bad.”
One of the greatest lessons I ever learned: just because I’m in a body cast doesn’t mean someone else’s broken arm doesn’t hurt. The point is no one should have been hurt in the first place.

“I began Law School at 19......” think about it. Not only does this mean she’s a prodigy for finishing college three years ahead of schedule. It also means she started law school a mere four years after being abused by Nassar. And now, here she is, fearlessly and with unwavering laser focus, leading the charge towards justice on behalf of the hundreds of victims of the same abuse she herself endured. Victims just like her she had no idea even existed let alone one day represent in court. Some greater power saw her as the one person best suited to help these girls, and that they needed her to be there for them as quickly as possible. Things happen for a reason.
The first thing that made Rachael different from everybody was that her intuition told her at 15 that he had done this before, which she was correct on… She was correct & she followed that intuition until she uncovered the truth and pushed it to the Indianapolis Star. I don’t know why this happened to her, that will never be right and never be OK, but perhaps she was in her position for such a time as this.

John I am seeking compensation for my abuse because I need to pay out of pocket for any treatments. This is going to cost a ton of money. I am doing this so I can finally find peace and deal with the issues I have. We don't know her reasons, but it shouldn't matter!!! No money can help us find peace, but I can pay to get the best help so I can move on.

It is not about men covering for men. It is about the people who have the power, both men and women. I worked with an organization, and watched the woman in charge cover up the abuse of a woman. If this director would have sought justice, it would have cost her money, so she covered it up. It is money and power, not men or women.
I am so glad she gave all to end this. I didnt know that she was the one. When she said she had to give up her diaries to make this happen it opened my eyes. She is now at this moment in time my new idol. I'm 40 but when I grow up I hope I can be just like her. She made my heart grow this morning. Her strength faith and care was awsome to see. I'd say fair would be Larry Nassar being subjected to the same pain, humiliation, and perversion which he exposed hundreds of children to throughout his career, whatever that may be. I have watched each and every testimony given within this case. I have listened to the horrific and disturbing things that these girls and women have been subjected to and felt such empathy when they described how it has affected each and every facet of their lives. Rachel Denhollander's was so powerful and eloquent, and I am so impressed with how well she maintained composure throughout. To all the women who were brave enough to come forward and make their voices heard, I commend you. I hope your strength and honesty will spurr other young people who are being abused to come forward and tell someone.

Wow, I thought Alys statement was powerful but this was something else. She did a brilliant job of summarizing what it took to get to this point and I hope this isn't the end. It should not be this hard for victims to be heard. I have a feeling that years down the line, some actress is going to end up playing this woman and reciting a lot of these same lines. I admire her for offering forgiveness but he deserves none. She knocked it all home.
If there is a film, I hope that the survivor have a part in it. If they choose to: it is now their story and they would be the best authorities on how to tell this story right. They did such a good job here. I am sure though that somebody some day will. The question is if it would take a movie or something more like a docuseries. I love the thought of someone having to read and watch film on sweet little Rachel’s life & finding their own inner strength and a source of inspiration in portraying her.

SilkySlim, what everyone doesn't realize is that accusations are just that, accusations. Unless a person has absolute proof that something was done, you can't really do anything. Just because someone says that someone else touched them, doesn't mean it happened. Can you prove they touched you indecently? Any video evidence? If not, then it's a he says/she says thing. Look at the Duke lacrosse team, they were falsely accused of raping that girl.
Mark W Well, he actually recorded some of the abuse. If anyone listened then that evidence would have come out way sooner, and the abuse would have stopped earlier.
.... I was taken advantage of in 2004. I was raped at 15. I never told anyone. I still, sometimes, have to pass by the house I was raped in. It's so hard to get over. I hate it. And I hate him. She gives me strength. 💛 I admire her.

wow she is an amazingly strong woman! I could never face a court room full of people like this, let alone speak with the strength and grace that she did. Im so proud of ever victim who was brave enough to speak their truth right to their abusers face. hopefully the other girls who didn't feel like they were ready or capable of speaking in that hearing will be able to heal and grow stronger and happier everyday that man is away from them.

The only reason she called out his attorney is because, 1st, the attorney went on record by being televised and said ,she feels she’s only doing this for fame and money. Secondly,she was making a point that she isn’t doing this for fame and money!! It’s very relevant!
Angela Martinez In another interview Rachael did, i loved it when she said that she didn't do this for fame and money but she also knew and acknowledged that to bring change in large organisations such as the US gymnastics association, public outcry and media attention is needed...it was not for personal fulfilment but for justice and to prevent it from happening in the future.. that is just the way the world goes right now...
What an articulate, well educated and beautiful human inside and out. I didn’t think I’d be able to listen to the full speech, but the way that she chooses her words has made it easier than it should be considering the circumstances. I hope that she finds peace and a way to move on from this evil
