Man if you compare this video with the tour of the "Summer Bay". You certainly see two different philosophies regarding the role of the skipper/vessel owner in providing accommodations to the crew. I realize there is a 60+ year difference in the age of the vessels. But one skipper's idea is that if you make your crew comfortable you will get more out of them. And the other's is that it is a work vessel. Therefore, making the new guys berth in a dank, "Nastiest places on earth" stateroom, and giving them the cheapest possible junk food is fine. I know who I would rather have worked for if I was that age again.

wow this was super cool!!! I was looking for a tour of the boats after deadliest catch and didn't expect to find a tour from one of the actual boats. so interesting to see more behind the scenes of some iconic places, like that seat in the galley when there were tons f fights lol

Here is a "fun fact". In 1974 the vessel that became the F/V Wizard was refitted as molasses carrier, named Clifford K. (ON 594470). That is right, the proud Wizard was previously a molasses carrier. With this barge being of the single screw type and the beam lenght ratio (also the draft) being what it is there is no way this combination would be considered a "best configuration" for a Bering Sea crab boat. Now the Northwestern is more of a purpose built fishing vessel. I sure would like to see, if only on paper a "dream configuration" for a boat intended to be a Bering Sea crab boat, from the very beginning. OH intended crew makeup when the Wizard was a fuel barge was 22 enlisted men and one officer. I am retired now (auto mechanic) but when I was out looking for work I would ask to be shown where "my stall" would be. If I did not like the setup (like it would take too much jockeying around to get a large truck or van on the rack), this would be placed on the negative list, a list that helped me decide what job offer to take. It is nice when you do not need to take a job offer that does not fit well, something I believe that happens with the Wizard, and not totally due to the boats construction.

I had such a vivid dream last night that I signed up to do some bearing sea crab fishing on the Wizard. It was so real, the emotions, the feel, the sounds and smells... Very wild. I woke up SO GLAD that I wasnt actually on this vessel.. .even tho its the raddest one on the show.

Keith is my favorite captain because hes so human in front of the camera you see it all the anger he has when something or someone does something wrong but then at the flip of a switch if one of his guys gets hurt hes there.

I like Keith too, but I don't know if I would want to be on a ship with a short tempered captain. He might go off on you for no good reason at all. You would have to constantly have to try and please him for the littlest of things like getting him a cup of coffee when he asks for it. That's not the kind of shit I would want to deal with. But I agree with everything else you said.

Such a scary feeling to me to be out to sea hundreds of miles from shore and your depending upon nothing breaking down on the ship. Like Kieth said, it’s like a floating town. It’s comforting at least to know there are back ups for virtually every piece of equipment on board to keep systems running. But help is SO far away😬

I hope Keiths attitude towards his brother has changed over the last 12 years since this was published. Mouse has saved his butt for years now and really never gets enough credit for it.

Nobody from Captain to greenhorn gets paid enough for the work they do and conditions under which they work and live.

Ive been watching deadliest catch for a long time. It has to be the toughest job to do. You can be gone in know time. All it takes is for the right wave to hit the boat or get crushed between crab pots and more.yea they can make a lot of money. But it's a very dangerous jobs in the world. I'd have to really think about it. Good luck to yall.

Captain Keith used to be my favorite Captain, but as the seasons went on I noticed he is just a loose cannon. He treats people like garbage, even his own brother, the only thing he cares about is the boat and how much crab he catches. Keith even attacked the camera man for not making him coffee, he literally grabbed the guy by the jacket and pushed him 15feet down the hall and against a wall, just for not making him coffee which is not even the camera man's job. I remember the first two seasons I thought that Sig Hanson of the NW was a bully and always thought that Keith was a nice guy but after a while I noticed that Keith is just plain crazy and Sig Hanson isn't such a bad guy after all. I would never in a million years step on the Wizard, his workers are treated like slaves, the only worker I seen Keith respect is Freddy otherwise everyone else is treated like pure trash by him. Unfortunately my all time favorite very respected Captain Phil Harris of the CM is gone, but he was the one man that was always strict but fair to everyone. It's always the ones that go to soon. RIP Phil Harris. Karma will catch up with Keith sooner or later.

He's very crabby when crabbing. The other skippers seem to handle the pressure and the demands of running the boat a bit better than Keith. He's also taken a few brik braks for how he has run the boat and put his crew into Danger. ie a put up a Tarpaulin over the pots to prevent iceing up in storm force winds; in reality others said the boat was overloaded with pots for the weather expected. Seems like they have two of everything...except the important bit like the Main Engine....

Would it be very important to have a secondary engine so if the main engine went down, you could at least keep the ship pointed into the swells?

Think of Keith as a Drill Instructor. If you fuck up expect hell, but if you keep your head down and do it, you'll live. He runs the boat as a business, as his livelihood is on the line, and his family needs him. Look how often he calls his children. I also think him trying to quit tobacco chewing is causing a few of his temper flares.

Whilst enjoying whatever the bio weapon is that is being pandered off as a respiratory flu I caught up on 12 seasons of Deadliest Catch (sick 8 weeks) The Wizard was always one of my top favorites. (Time Bandit & Northwestern always tied for first w/ Wizard & CM tying for second) But man. The Wizard isn’t looking good in Seasons 15-17. It looks super rusty. Something significant breaks every other episode and Captain Keith went from being a sort of SOB caricature to pretty much just an SOB. I used to enjoy thinking “oh boy Keith is going to pop his top” but now it kinda seems like all Keith does is blow his stack. Kinda wondering how many seasons Deadliest Catch has left in her. PS: on a totally unrelated note it seems like Edgar got screwed. Yeah Mandy is cute but all of a sudden she shows up and a major character through 14 seasons just disappeared. Wasn’t he part owner of the Northwestern? We didn’t even get a title card that says “Edgar now enjoys time with his family. He owns a body shop in Everett”. The dude was on over 250 episodes. 😐

He basically gets stressed out and takes his anger out on others. A captain should be more mature and not let his own personal issues affect the crew members. But I agree that his heart is in the right place and for that I like him, but I wouldn't want to work under him.

Redundant = failsafe. If one system goes down, the second one is brought on line. When you are 300 miles from a dock, out there in rough seas, this stuff is necessary. Things break and you can't afford to be without electricity, water, air, GPS, communications, etc. I work in Information Tech. Everything we do at the datacenter has fail-safes. Redundant power supplies, drive arrays with hot spares, etc. This keeps things online when something fails.

The vessel is old and worn. Any vessel 77 years old shouldn’t be on the open seas enduring the abuse and punishment of a crab boat. Especially the Bering sea! Too many lives at stake. Just because it may pass inspection doesn’t guarantee it to be safe. But unfortunately money can sometimes distort one’s vision when it comes to safety which is the case for Keith and many other crabbers. Generally speaking on average one crab boat goes down every year with little to no survivors.
