It's a good trail for beginners to intermediate hikers. I have been to Rawson lake and really enjoyed the hike. Yes, pacing yourself is a good idea. I did that and made it to the lake and around. Majestic view of the rockies.
Hey Keith, just a heads up, its likely a bit too early in the season for this hike. That saddle carries a lot of snow till late June and is an avalanche risk till about mid June. Make sure if you do do it you bring sturdy micro spikes and are familiar with avalanche dangers and risks. Having AST1 would be advisable in doing this hike before the snow has fully cleared. But either way, its an amazing hike! Cheers, Jesse
Unfortunately you can’t legally camp at Rawson Lake, and there would be very few limited tent placements. On top of that it’s a primary corridor for a local bear and her cubs each year. All combined it’s a camping no-go which is too bad because it would be beautiful if there was space. Lower Elk Lake is a great option if you want stunning scenery by an alpine lake. Easiest route is backpacking, but there is also a backroads drive-up. Cheers and Keep Moving Forward!
Hah. Well life’s a journey... and so are my hairstyles! (Although I think I’ve settled down a bit more now... the beard can change at any moment though. Lol).
