On another interview, a journalist asked Ray "isn't it too hard to be such a famous person and blind?" and Ray answers "It could be worse, I could be black".
Yeah it’s nice letting the guest talk. I was just watching Eddie Murphy on a talk show and the audience wouldn’t stop applauding after every single thing he uttered.
Yes, I love how he didn’t let his blindness stop him from being aware about the world. I can see, and I don’t even feel that I’m as aware as he is! Haha
@@Tiger42s How can you say that somebody is dumb for trying drugs when you didn't experienced drugs? Different drugs act different for different people. It's all in the user perception if that drug is bad for him or not. For example Steve Jobs used acid to dig deep into his imagination and create his inventions. For some people acid would just destroy them. It's all in the mind 🌬
@@Ady00pk bro everybody is telling you not do drugs! You dumb ass. How many sad story's do I gonna hear. Bro you sound so stupid. Just dumb asf. Ever seen them meth commercials? But hey if you wanna go try some heroin with a dirty needle on the streets go! I'm not stopping you. Most homeless people be on drugs and that's a fact. Ppl overdose daily and die! Did you skip middle school health class??? 😂😂🤣 u stupid. ALL STREET DRUGS ARE BAD
I've heard they hear and smell crazy things instead of getting visuals. There's a blind guy with a RU-vid channel that answers a bunch of questions just like that
A guy high on pot and heroine? Nah, he's cool. Old black dudes who've been through racism are usually chill as hell. Most kids these days though are spoiled, privileged little sh*ts.
When ever I see footage like this of Ray Charles, it makes appreciate how Jamie Foxx is such a great actor. In the movie Ray, Jamie captured all of Ray's mannerisms so well and even the tone of his voice. Brilliant work.
Great guy. So glad he stressed the point of alcohol being a drug, on multiple occasions here. Even in some AA meetings, alcoholics try to divide the two; alcoholic and addict. The former is the same as the latter, it just means "addicted to alcohol." Booze is the real "gateway drug" if there ever was one. Thanks for the upload.
+Reed Rosson yes indeed...the # 1 Killer...as Ray says AK uh hall....99% of all addiction is related to Alcohol...GATEWAY Drug if there ever was one...as a kid i recall it being encouraged...it was wink wink,Did not know that he got clean with H...and of course (and i have done it 100x ) i stopped using HARD drugs like H with Alcohol...it keeps working...every time...time after time
Martin Kahl Same here, dabbled in the H-Bomb and all kinds of stuff. Nowadays I stick to a little beer (no hard liquor or even wine really), a little weed, and sometimes prescribed meds. Cheers and Happy Living to you, sir!
hit the nail on the head thats what ruined me i wouldnt do anything until i drank a beer then its on if iam lucky wake up at home not i n jail again no lie
I was addicted to something once... Ray is COMPLETELY right. You have to decide your addiction is over and that you don't want to do it anymore. Then you have to fight for it. The week that I quit using was one of the worst in my life. The most violent flu like symptoms with constant pain and nausea. The devil on my shoulder kept telling me to call my dealer, but my mind was so made up that I fought through it. Ironically, I thought of the movie Ray and the scenes where he went through a natural detox to get clean. That was a pretty good representation of what it feels like to get clean.
Sometimes it's just triggers being removed. At the start of lockdown I'm like "oh and I can't just go outside for a smoke with coworkers... okay... so I won't then..." That's it, now I don't smoke anymore. After 19 years
Yep, people who have been using know exactly what he's talking about. For me it just took waking up in a hospital to "make up my mind" that this was not good for me
The thing with Ray and other films they show detox, they can't show how long even a minute feels in withdrawal ... and then the post acute withdrawal that lasts weeks and months
He's on the right mindset though. Leave it up to thearispts to help you through, and only speak from experience as unsolicited advice can be misleading to folks.
I don’t know much of Dick Cavett but he seemed like a true gentleman : He even stood up w Ray Charles when the credits were rolling so he wouldn’t look “uncomfortable” . A+ in my book !
Thanks for posting this. Makes me miss the days when regular network television allowed time for actual conversations, even when the guest had no new product to plug. Ray Charles was an extraordinary talent. I saw him perform live at a relatively small venue when I was about 14 years old and I still recall that when he first came out, I got light-headed. Closest I have ever come to fainting. His charisma, presence and the exquisite expressiveness of his vocal instrument was something that was best appreciated in person.
Ray experienced some drug problems early in his career, and once said his main addictions were cigarettes, drug's and women, and still women. He fathered 12 children by 10 different women. Still, Ray was a great man, and musician.
This man is my personal favorite. He crossed the music genres; Blues, RB, Soul, Country Western, Jazz and appealed to several generations. He was also very handsome. This man was a genius and far surpassed the hand he was dealt as a child. Much love. ❤
Ray was spot on. As someone in the mental health field, people have to want to change and be open to change. The pain of staying the same has to be greater than the pain of change. So that’s when the people from the mental health field can come and assist and facilitate change, but change is powerful because it is the person putting in the work for themselves, but they don’t have to do it alone
Ray used to pop across the pond to the UK quite a bit in the 70's. I was only a kid but when he appeared on TV shows I used to be glued to the screen. I absolutely loved him and I still do!
What an insightful man . Just a moment of talking about addiction and he’s nailed it . If you want to give up you have to be of a mind to . No one but you can ultimately make that decision . All the books in the world , the therapy sessions , the meetings . You are the one who has the power.
You know, everyone makes mistakes. Mr Ray Charles had a hard life and went through a lot. Despite everything, he overcame his own demons. He grew, he learned. He’s an inspiration who literally came from the ground up on his own. He’s a beautiful and intelligent human being and I wish so badly I could’ve met him. Rest easy you amazing blues king. We all love you. I know you’re making beautiful music in heaven. Keep on rockin and rollin 🤍 I’ve heard from some of my elders who have had the beautiful opportunity of meeting him, say he’s the sweetest, most kind hearted human being. Very down to earth and a pure entertainer who was in it purely for his own pleasure. Not for fame. He’s a true gift from god. He’s also correct. As a former drug user, I agree completely with what he said.
This is my first time ever seeing a interview with Ray Charles. It's so crazy because he's talking about drugs and I'm struggling with it right now. But every word he said was on point. If I can just make up mind and realize drugs is not right for me, I will be able to quit. Man I really want to.
Drugs or no drugs his prolific output still stands to inspire all...Ray Charles Robinson overcame formidable obstacles to bring his gift to the world...his music speaks louder than words.
How great was Ray with his honesty here? Just Fantastic! A real one and generous with his personal feelings! I have never seen a Dick Cavett clip with anyone that I didn't enjoy but this was really really great!
Rip ray charles.. Everytime i see his interviews i just think. Damn jamie foxx did a great job! Hes amazing! And so is this late great king.. Sleep well big homie 👑
Is there any doubt in anyone's mind that after Ray Charles left us, he went straight to Heaven? His talent was a gift from God and to God, he returned it.
FBI uh oh . Look out ! Casual internet atheist ! I know there is a god because claiming the Big Bang theory explains the earth , solar system , galaxy , galaxies , and universe is like claiming an explosion happened at a printing press and it created an unabridged dictionary , and expecting people to believe it was random . Lol . Sit down
That's how I quit drinking and doing Meth. I just made up my mind and that was it. No docs, no drugs, no hospital or meetings. I simply got bored. We really need to become acquainted with our strengths as a people. Humans are incredibly strong mentally and emotionally and I think there are people who have convinced us we are not. Reclaim your strength! You can do anything, you are wonderfully made.
@@dadoodfrumcheers. you're a badass just for wanting out but you're a super hero when you realize how much stronger you are than it. So, don't stop warrior, keep going and never forget how tough you are
WherAmxZnHappns thats Dick Cavett. He was a HUGE deal in the 70s. Everyone was on his show. And he just carried a convo and u hear amazing stuff when people just talk. Now you see all these podcasts who carry conversations and they kind of stole Cavett’s playbook. Even Howard Stern to an extent (with his interviews only) borrowed from Dick. I highly recommend that u check some of his other stuff on RU-vid. Still wish there were shows like this on tv.
His view on drugs is spot on. You have to want to stop. Your mind has to be made up that you are done using drugs or anything for that matter. Just like Ray said. Much respect Mr. Charles....RIP
As a kid, whenever I'd see Ray Charles on tv performing, I would think to myself that he was going to fall off of the piano bench with all the rocking from side to side that he'd do. When he'd stand up, same thing. Just watching this clip, as Ray stood up from his chair at the end of the interview, I'm saying, "Get up Cavett and hold him so he won't fall. Ray probably had more balance then most seeing people!!! R.I.P. Bro. Ray.
I know what you mean. When I saw him in person in concert, I was astounded as to how impeccable his sense of balance appeared. Light on his Feet too!!😉
A true genius. And to think, if the movie is relatively fair on depicting his life....had he not gone blind, had his brother not died tragically, had his mother not been so smart yet very tough on Ray. Would he have been Ray Charles or just Ray Robinson, that none of us would know from peter or paul.
Ray was clean from drugs but an alcoholic until about 1990 which is why he dies from liver disease. Just kinda ironic he mentions alcohol as a drug several times in the interview.
+Tysons Accosta Liver damage from heroin is unknown. Yes hepatitis (a kind of liver infection) is a communicable disease and sharing needles can communicate it - but that is NOT the same as saying heroin caused liver damage.
