David Vine interviews six-time World Champion Ray Reardon at the Crucible in 1992 and reflects on his last hurrah at the venue in 1985 against a young John Parrott.
Golden age of televised snooker. The grand old master lays a deadly snooker, follows up with a killer blow break. Perfect commentary from the great Jack Karnehm and John Spencer.
Ray Reardon was one of the finest all-round snooker players in the history of the game,.... brilliant safety player, and wonderful potter,...and a real gent
Reardon the best all-round player of all-time. Consistency, temperament, potting, safety, creativity, longevity, tactical, mental strength, popularity etc.....Reardon had no weak links in his game
Was there ever a greater representative of his sport than Ray Reardon, or a better sports presenter than the late David Vine. It brings back memories to hear him utter in his inimitable style the words "Six times champion of the world Ray Reardon "
An excellent clip with two great men, the brilliant Ray Reardon, who was one of my childhood idols, a gentleman and an all time snooker great, who is still going strong. And the late David Vine, what a wonderful presenter and man he was too, RIP David.
Yes he was slightly passed it by now by was still ranked 6 at the seasons end however Reardons marriage collapsed that summer. That finished him as he hardly won a match the following season
Fred Davis in 1978, Ray Reardon in 1985 and Steve Davis in 2010: that last hurrah smells sweet! Hendry never really had a proper "last hurrah", I believe that's why he's back; he wants that last sweet moment.
Great match to watch between different generations . Ray Reardon had class and composure under pressure . Love his set up to yellow, starting with last red red to black. Black to yellow is class shot under pressure
Thank you for sharing this video, and what a great interview, interesting thought about paying to turn pro instead of qualifying for it. I think he talked about Numpties without actually saying the word. Still a great legend.
The aura of the steady master playing safety shots til they hung themselves (as Steve Davis put it) was actually a very underrated potter! Great from tight angles into the middle pockets and a decent long game too!
Wrong sport, too working class, rugby league gets similar treatment. Equivalent achievements in cricket or rugby union and he would certainly be a KBE. Even Joe Davis didn’t get one
When Ray was brought in as a pundit 2 years ago at the Welsh open i couldnt help but think the guys knowledge and insight even in his 80s was being completely wasted. He has said himself that no1 calls him anymore. He has probably forgot more about snooker than what most people will ever know. Its a bit late for that now though as he is coming 90 years old. I would still have him in the studio over Reanne Evans any day though.
All good points but perhaps Ray missed the boat by not getting involved in punditry before he retired and was then regarded as too old by the time of his retirement. He was used as a guest commentator on a few mid-80's episodes of Pot Black IIRC but I don't remember him being particularly memorable so maybe he just never got asked again off the back of that. These are probably just two of various reasons, though, in all reality.
He certainly played it sufficiently hard so as to leave it near the top cushion should he have missed - which resulted in him giving away a free ball. Served him right. That's why a miss rule is needed.
