Don't forget The King of Queens, Malcolm In The Middle, Married with Children, Fresh Prince, The Bernie Mac Show and George Lopez. NOT a Friends fan lol.
It just makes it all the more special this being a guy who never acted before the show. It says something how far he had come as an actor to this point. Touches me deeply.
Winning an Emmy is a big deal, but man was the competition tough in this one! Kelsey Grammer, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and Bernie Mac were no slouches on their shows!
I know, man. Back in the day the Emmys had real competition where any of the nominees could've won easily. The following year had Ray, Bernie, Tony Shaloub, Larry David, Eric McCormack and Matt Leblanc. Tony won that one.
Well-deserved and rather overdue for Ray Romano at that time. The entire production was a miracle of alchemy when it came to the casting and writing and performing. I know some still sort of snark at the show, dismissing it as “just another” family-oriented sitcom, but I’m as snarky as they come and let me tell you: such people fail to perceive the raw and often dark, twisted nuances couched expertly in the broader strokes of the writing and the stellar performances. The show had a sly quality ever-thriving beneath the obvious, and played brilliantly between the buoyant and frustrating dualities that plague most families, resulting in a wistful tone that was always hilarious and never, ever pedestrian. ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ possessed its own, unique sophistication as the result of walking such a tightrope, where the mundane could meet the insane and appeal to both the jovial heart and the snickering cynic … along with millions in-between. Much of the show’s success was indeed due to creator Phil Rosenthal’s brilliant instincts and certainly to the fabulous (and versatile) veteran actors orbiting the namesake character, but, my gosh, Ray Romano’s extroverted insecurity, improvisational gifts, and genius-level timing/delivery *made* the program. The pinnacle belongs to him, indelibly. And he became a damned fine actor during that run, quite apart from his bedrock comedic chops. Romano deserved this honor in a big way. You better believe he did.
The summer before Raymond started, I went to a comedy club in Mineola, NY. The last act was Ray Romano, whom I had never heard of. He said he had a tv show coming on that fall. The club wasn't crowded, and I sat right in front of him. He was hysterical. I cherish that moment, because I felt like I discovered the next big thing. He deserves every bit of success he has had.
You gotta love how happy Kelsey looked for Ray here. He won every Emmy under the sun anyway so I doubt he would've cared regardless but it's good to see someone be so genuinely happy for someone else. That Kelsey Grammer is one special dude.
The core cast carried the show and they didn’t really ever have any big time guest stars appear like friends ended up doing later. That’s one reason I think Raymond is the better show than friends.
It appeared to me that Rays wife started getting upset as Ray was thanking everybody else, almost like she thought he forgot her, (she even slightly shook her head), but as soon as he mentioned her she smiled..awww..but great speech, well deserved win..But next time thank the wife first.. Lol..love Ray Ramano in everything!
She’s not upset because he was thanking other people first. She’s getting emotional because she’s happy for her husband’s success. Its like tears of joy (without the tears)
When I heard Matthew Perry got an Emmy nomination for Friends that year I was like "ABOUT FUCKING TIME!" Because he should've been nominated ages ago throughout the show's whole run. Love you Chandler Bing, you were everybody's favorite friend to me.
honestly it shouldn't have to be explained, Chandler's sarcasm, Joey's stupidity, Ross' rage, Phoebe's rage, Monica's obsessions, and Rachel's reactions to things in general. If you think it's just sex shit, you clearly haven't properly watched it! The rest of the shows nominated that year is the basis of the comedy of today's sitcoms and most of them are pure trash
How is that 'explaining' how Friends is better? It can be argued that ELR is better due to it's closer ties to reality, and more focused, (one story per show) but both shows were great in their own way. Apples and Jaffa cakes!
It must have been pure bliss yet torture to be an Emmy member in those days, especially in Comedy. I mean, how can you pick between Friends, Malcolm in the Middle, Everybody Loves Raymond, Will and Grace and Fraser?! All excellent shows with amazing performances.
Friends was the most over rated show ever. I only see parts of re-runs by accident and keep changing channels. Love Cranston, but he just did Malcolm for a paycheck. Will and Grace - never saw it, never had any interest to me. Fraiser had a few bright moments, but not something I would program on my DVR. ELR was pretty good overall. Who can't love the Frog Lady.
@@scoutandscooter Yes, Frog Lady! Great execution by the actors, but gave to give credit to the writers who conceived the idea for this episode. Robert finds ideal woman at last except for this one insignificant flaw!
Disagree about Friends but you're right on the money with the rest and I'll add King of Queens which imo should've got some Emmy love, especially because the performances of Kevin James, Leah Remini and especially Jerry Stiller were phenomenal every episode.
It's funny when Patricia messes up his hair as Patricia already had 2 emmys and Ray never had any and he would always tease her when she messed up her lines.
Comedy today can't hold a candle to the sitcoms of the 80s/90s/early 2000s. Veep, Schitt's, Office, Mrs Maisel are all terrific comedy products. But they can't hold a candle to the originality and quality of Frasier, Cheers, Raymond, Seinfeld, Mary Tyler Moore. Not even close.
Watching Patty get so emotional made ME emotional! Boy, what a show... there will never be another that even comes close to ELR! Ray's Emmy was overdue but I'm so, so happy he won because he definitely deserved it!! ❤
I loved this show but have to say his character is definitely one of the most annoying characters in sitcom history and quite possibly the most annoying leading character
He says some really yucky things whenever he's a guest on tv shows. Doesn't seem to have a good sensor for what is not appropriate to say on national tv. And, it's not that they are even funny stories, just rather in very poor taste.
