The bridge is sweet but can we agree that the bass its self is the coolest thing that Dan has made.

1. I always check my setup before the gig and I've never broken a bass string on stage. (I started gigging at 17 and never stopped. I am now 71.) Ease of adjustment isn't requisite, but nice to have. 2. I doubt the difference in tone/sustain would ever be noticed playing live. Especially given a drummer who won't stay off of that crash cymbal and a guitarist who doesn't know he has a neck pickup. I do, however, hear an improvement in the lowest registers - increased clarity of the 3rd, 4th and 5th partials. Impressive. 3. (and this is my point) When I'm at home practicing - trying to get my phrasing right, working on a Bach Bourree or trying to get Jamerson's groove - THAT is when I'm really listening and need the best sound I can get to stay focused, purposeful and enjoy the music. I'll likely purchase this bridge. I, too, enjoy innovation and I'll take all the help I can get. 4. Great review, but then you do a good job with pretty well all of your videos.

I'm a guitarist so I'm not sure what type of sound is most desirable from a bass players perspective. I did find the Fender bridge to be more pleasing to the ear, but from what Dan was saying, I think preserving some top end bite and having more sustain gives you more options as a player. You can always EQ away some high mids, but if your bass doesn't preserve them you can't really bump the highs if they're missing to begin with. For playing heavier rock and upbeat worship, I can see how having a bit of bite could help distinguish the Bass from the other instruments in the mix instead of it getting lost next to the pads/keys. I'm interested to know if it really matters to y'all bassists out there. I guess if the Fender gets you closest to the sound you need 90% of the time, then you can live without the highs the other 10%.

@@8stringwrshpleader I'm bassist., In my opinion, i think it depends on what technique or genres that you're gonna play with. I usually do slapping and fingerstyle, so i love fatter tone in lower mid but brighter in higher mid (like musicman stingray tone). So i prefer to have a smoother and fatter bridge For picking in punk or metal scene, some bassist love to preserve the twanginess rather than cut them off. Idk, it's just my opinion.. I'm not really get into punk or metal scene, i usually do rock, funk, jazz, and pop music

It sounds like it added a bit of spring reverb. Kinda reminds me of when someone would kick/run into my old Peavy Bandit 112. It may just be the memories, but I'm not a fan. The concept is interesting though. Maybe with a bit of stability to kill the tonal characteristics of it I'd be into it.

You got lucky, the original bridge on my mex fender was terrible, the grub screws on the g string would work their way down and bottom the string out when I’d do slap/pop, and the intonation screws would work their way out as well. Could’ve used some purple locktite to try make them stay put, but I just upgraded it to a gotoh bridge with better tolerances, completely solved it.

Maybe. I find this remedies one inherent issue with all bass bridges that has a break angle over a saddle. The standard and high mass Fender or BadAss 2 are not very different in tone, I find. This stems from 20 years of touring with Fender-style basses.
@BadvisionStudios

@@mattiasjp I like both. Used Badass ii on many basses in the past. Upgraded a recently acquired Fender Jazz and tried the Hi-Mass and loved it. Every bit is good as the badass and honestly I don't hear that much difference at all but costs way less. First time listening through *without* headphones, I thought "B is the new bridge, but it will get lost in the mix". Put a decent set of phones on and listened again.... The fingerstyle chord section had me **seeing** the string vibration on the drone note. I get it now, and think it would help cut through. That said, I'm not near good enough to justify spending almost 2 bills on a bridge like that. I will spend the 60-80 for a LQ or Hipshot (latter preferred, most recently), but double that? The bridge better correct my technique on the fly, and auto tune any wrong notes. ;)

I have an LQ and it sounds great, but I'd go Hipshot. Needing a luthier to file the saddles on an LQ is too much of a hassle for me. I prefer being able to install things on my own so I can get back to playing, and sadly not all techs really respect an instrument.

The Ross bridge allows more harmonic content to be heard. Tapered end strings are designed to do that on traditional bridges - I wonder what those would sound like on the Ross 🤔 I like the design a lot and I do dig the extra “Zing” which can be tamed with your tone control for a smoother tone, or left open for that piano ring and slap tone.

It needs a redesign with a tube and a locking screw, to take up the part of string that shouldn’t be part of its sung length I love the concept, but he got really arsey with me when I said that neither the locking winds, or the silk wraps on strings should be part of the sung area of a string... He literally said it doesn’t make a difference if you have two inches of silk wind sticking out the bridge... Like no Ray, it will.

That’s a good point. I stopped using the silk strings years ago, honestly forgot that some bass strings even have that, it would look kinda goofy on this bridge.
@Jonathan_Doe_
@Jonathan_Doe_ 3 года назад
@@GunsandGuitars It’s not only silk wind strings there’ll be issues with, if you listen to sample B, the upper harmonic content is a bit out of tune, that’s because the lockwind part of a string near the ball end is actually stiffer, so having it exposed causes some harmonic weirdness.

Great review, Dan!! I can definitely hear the difference. As a recent convert to flatwounds, I preferred A. But, I knew immediately the Ross was B from your previous descriptions. I played steel rounds only for 30 years, so I see why you dig it. I have theories that explain the tonal difference, but they're just unproven theories (unproved/unproven??). My favorite flats come with warnings on the labels saying that only the silk portion of a string should be on the tuner post, and we all know why... the B and or E strings will break. After checking my 30-ish bass collection, I have 4 that I could use a Ray Ross on. They're 2+2 and 3+2 headstock 4s and 5 strings. None of my 4 in-line headstock (Fender style) basses can take that bridge and still allow me to use these flats: LaBella LTFs, DTFs, and Golds, TI jazz, Sadowsky, EBMM Cobalt, GHS, Dunlop, and DR Legends. Since I have all these installed on basses, it's easy to see that they are all 1 to 2 inches too long. Does anyone make 32" and 33" scale flatwounds that could remedy this issue? Most of us don't build or own reverse headstock basses. I personally would not risk an $80 set of flats to give this bridge a try.

When you enter a dark room, you can only see fuzzy shapes and outlines. Turn on the light and you can see everything in the room with clarity. If someone is faced away from you on the other side of the desk, their conversation lacks impact and vitality. If they stand right in front of you, place their hands on your shoulders, and look you straight in the eye, their conversation has presence. These words were not intended to be scientific. Most definitely a significant difference. The added sustain is definitely a bonus. However, the tonal qualities change significantly, so unless you can use eq to get to where you want, then you just end up with a different sounding Bass. The mod made for an increase in attack, as well as higher frequency response ... However, that was at the expense of the low-end. Depending on where you want the Bass to fit into the mix, it could be either good, or bad ... Final observation: the new bridge sounds a lot more similar to a Rickenbacker. Hey, that's a value for money improvement if it saves the cost of a Ricky !!!

I thought the Ross was more "pingy", and I suspect it was due to the thicker section of string near the ball-ends being in play, rather than being behind the saddle. The trad bridge sounded more "refined" - but I bet you could get that sound from the Ross by rolling the treble down a bit. For aggressive music, where the bass is taking center stage, it could be an advantage, but in a mix, I doubt it would matter one way or the other.

More thoughts: I question the long-teem durability of the design, as that's a lot of vibrating load pulling at 90° to the screw thread and pole. How long before the threads become siezed together, or alternatively loosened by the vibration ... ? Also, personally I'd want some sort of cover over those vertical posts, for palm muting and just hand protection. Most of my Basses have solid heavy-duty Bridges, unlike the 'lightweight' Fender design. Most Bass manufacturers moved on from the Fender antiquated style decades ago ...

I know this comment's old, but according to the creator of this bridge design, the pins are designed to be naturally pulled downward by the leverage made by the tension of the string, as to create more downforce against the body of the bass. I imagine the screws and whatnot are robust enough to handle that if that's the intent of the design. I can't speak from experience but supposedly the pins aren't uncomfortable to palm mute. YMMV, of course.

I put a couple little neodymium magnets on the back of the headstock that holds the hex key for the guitar I use it with. if it gets knocked off the guitar is probably broken too. I nailed it. B. Louder, brighter, grit, big bottom end and sustain. Gotta see how much these babies are and do some modding on one of my cheap basses. Probably my Dean MetalMan-Z. It's a cheap one. Had to do full fret end redo out of the box.

Yeah. Definitely gonna throw this bridge on my Dean.

The boost in upper mids might also be well suited to a short scale bass, where overtones are said to be fewer.

Have you checked out the Babicz Full Contact bridges? I absolutely prefer the Babicz over what I saw of this bridge. I'm currently working on a couple of bass and guitar builds and one of the basses will have a babicz full contact bridge and another will have the Hipshot bridge designed to replace the Rickenbacker craptacular bridge

I've been looking for a different style bridge and a few months ago thought the Ross was quite different! It has a nice "boing" to it. It had a great "open/unrestricted" sound to it. You mentioned the "piano tone" and yes I agree and have been interested in developing it. I think I'll be picking one up! Always dug the piano type sound. I am very interested to check out the feel of this. I think it will be fun to play with and develop the feel for the strings And what new sound discoveries that are waiting to be found! Thanks man, I really appreciate this review. I love the headstock cutout and very interested in this too by the way!

Have you tried Rotosound PSD strings yet? "Piano Style Design" contact core, with adjustable-length core strings' tails. The most complicated string replacements ever, but clarity unlike any other strings...
@driverbass1554
@driverbass1554 3 года назад
@@justincurtner4818 I have not, but do remember these. And had always been curious about them. I've actually have never played Rotosounds, I've wanted to try the Steve Harris set because they are flats. I have heard the Roto round wounds can eat up frets and that they don't last long. At the price they are, I've just never tried them. I used Dean Marley Blue Steels for years, until I found stainless steel round wounds from Ken Smith. They last for a real long time and actual are smooth from the get go. Kinda like the DRs I s been using. I am not a fan of D'adario on bass, they are fine on guitars tho.

@@justincurtner4818 you say the core strings are adjustable? Very interesting.
@justincurtner4818
@justincurtner4818 3 года назад
@@driverbass1554 Yes, you install the "ball" ends [actually cone and cup] yourself, so that each string has the length of naked core you choose. You do end up having to adjust action at the saddles too, as it drops each string down by a millimeter or so. They're stainless roundwounds though, except more responsive, and so will not be to everyone's liking, sound-wise. This is only on the PSD sets, not any other Rotosound sets.

I love everything about that bass guitar. Even if it doesn’t affect the tone it affects the physical stress of the strings. Great stuff!

I'm curious about the Ray Ross Bridge as well and would love to try a comparison on my channel with a Badass II bridge. But I really can't get over the fact that it looks like only "half a bridge". Like, I feel like there should be two sets of posts to keep the string as back as possibile and avoid the final string windings to end on the vibrating section of the string and to avoid the thick section of the string going around the tuning post on the head stock, which already happens which most Fender stock bridges.

More of a difference than I expected! Fender-style sounds more balanced. RR is a bit more punchy. I like both. Really depends what sound you're going for.

As a fairly hack-eared bassist, I wasn't expecting to hear a difference - but could clearly hear it within seconds. Also totally agree with the piano string analogy: very dreamy indeed. I like hearing the occasional plug for more top-end stuff when it's warranted like this (even though my broke-arse, who still borrows a bass to play gigs, could never afford that...) Nice vid

In terms of adjustment I would guess that sting height would be pretty straight forward, but what about intonation? As traditional bridges have both an anchor point and an adjustable saddle for intonation, moving the saddle does not affect the string length or tension, but on the Ray Ross as the anchor point and the "saddle" point are one and the same wouldn't this mean that adjustments in intonation would affect string tension as well? I could imagine having to detune slightly in order to loosen tension when moving the intonation point back (and vice versa). Is it more fiddly than a traditional bridge when setting up the intonation?

Dan, I don't like the price tag of the Ray Ross bridge, but that's about the only thing I DON'T like. The tone is fantastic! I didn't perceive the differences in sustain until you pointed them out, but I liked the tone better by a good bit. My favorite bass is the Music Man StingRay bass; the Ross bridge made your bass sound more like one of those than the Fender style bridge did. As you say, the cost is hard to justify, but there are definite positive returns to be had from the Ross bridge. I say that it is most definitely better than the Fender style unit!😎❤️️🎸‼️

I like both, I agree the Ray Ross definitely sounds brighter while the Fender had that lower tone feel to it. I think in all honesty it would be based on build as to which I would choose. Although due to the Natural punchiness of a Short Scale, I'd like to hear how the Ross would change the tone on that. Great video as always.

I'm surprised by just how audible the difference is - much more significant than I would have expected. I prefer the Ross though I could see why some might prefer the other bridge. I doubt that this bridge change alone would make much of a difference in say a live mix, but if you stack enough component choices like this they can add up to make a really great-sounding instrument.

This is a really exciting new concept. At the end of the day the tonal differences were minimal (nothing a little EQ couldn't... well, equalize) but I slightly preferred the Fender-style as it sits more where I perceive bass to fit in the mix without treading too much on the guitarists' frequencies. I like the lack of break points but part of me wonders if the associated lack of tension relief makes it more prone to string breakage at the ball end. Also wondering how this does with palm muting... a niche style for bassists to be sure but due to the design it looks more difficult.

I like the fender bridge better because of the fuller low end but then again you could just eq the tone on the other bridge to get the low end back and tame the brightness so you have the sustain benefit

I bet this bridge would sound great on a fretless bass, and that slotted headstock design with the sideways tuners would probably add to a good fretless sound as well.

It's an interesting take on a bridge design, for sure. I'm more curious in how the strings react in regard to feel/stiffness/pliability under your fingers because there is no break angle over the bridge saddle; it's straight. That would be a much bigger benefit - for me - instead of getting an approx 10% change in tone.

I did pick it out, I use an optical compressor to achieve something similar, now i’m just a Sunday player, but if I was building or had a repair sure, but to toss the old, maybe not. That said: I took my Opti-comp off my Bass/acoustic board and put it on the electric. Well, it bugged me, bought a second compressor. Feel is part of the pleasure of it, once you found a key, you can’t go back.

I like the Ray--it sounds like your playing position/technique is having more impact on the sound. I'm sure it adds also some more sensitivity to the string meaning they're a bit looser feeling?

nice vid and cool bridge (although i have some doubts about how it intonates, since there's uneven winding) i wonder how it'll compare to some of more high-end bridges - like Kickass, Babicz etc.

I liked the sound of the Jazz Walking bass with Ray Ross, it’s got that umpfh that sometimes seems to be missing, but for the rest of the samples I felt the A sample which was the Standard Style bridge had more ”sophisticated” or balanced tone in it. I think it’s case sensitive and could be just that tweaking the EQ might actually bring out more of the qualities of each. What left me wondering though is how much tighter or harder does it make the feel of the strings, I’m intrigued because I kinda like to play quite low setup myself, but on the other hand I kinda like when there is a little more tension or it feels little bit tight when you olug the strings.. (I have a heavy plugging style) Have to test this out!

Big difference in the tone and the sustain. I would definitely swap out my bridges for that one. I am using Shaller and Hopshot bridges on all my basses . The strings and bridge are the first things I swap out when I purchase a new bass, then the pickups with Seymour Duncan 1/4 pounders. I use Babicz Bass Bridges on all my Gibson Basses. My Erne Ball Music Man is the only bass that is stock. Gotta buy one of those Ray Ross BASS Bridges.
