I agree with your assessment. Molly is a better Breaker and more dynamic. She isn't worldclass but she is better than Raygun and should have won this. Molly isn't polished; However with some training I think she would have been decent at the Olympics. I am not saying she would have won a medal but she at least would have been decent.
The basic difference between them is that Molly would have relied on moves rather than a contrived "style" so even if she wasn't very good either, her performance would probably be seen as a lot less mocking and funny, thus less memorable. Make Merit Great Again
The reality is that both bgirls had no chance to make it past round robin. I disagree with you on some points (zenny). Did we get into bboying for the moves, yes! But then then we understood the difficulty on everything else. Character/flavor/style are non teachable things and I have seen people KILL the battle just on top and never hit the floor, or barely, while the other guy just does the flips and moves. I have to say raygun has way more character and individuality than moly does, to me moly looks cookie cutter whereas ray has somewhat of a uniqueness to her, meaning she’s memorable. Everyone in the world can remember and and try and mimic her rounds while nobody even remembers what they final round looks like. Sure she doesn’t have the explosiveness but that’s not the full essence of bboying, that’s just a fraction of it. I have a weird non explosive style but I have gotten and entire event standing and shouting and ooohing and ahhhing over a non explosive round, why, because it was different and dope. And everyone comes up to me 15/20 years later and says “hey remember this move you used to do”. Shoot I don’t even remember but it was ingrained in their brain but they could remember what so and so did last event. Overall do I believe she should have been in the Olympics? For what the Olympics were going to be for the people, no I don’t think she fit in, I don’t think either one did. Now if we treated breakin like gymnastics like break it into categories, power, footwork, dance etc. then maybe. I just think we’re going a little to deep into this but I’m glad that all that’s on people’s lips and minds right now is “breakin” so yeah, let’s at least use this opportunity.

If Holly had made it to the Olympics she would have done her thing but she wouldn't be influencing people to mock breaking by doing corny ass moves like The Sprinkler lol. The wild arms to the roll back. The Kangaroo pose. I bet Holly wouldn't have done any of that. She would have maybe crashed a bit on her elbow airflare attempt and no one would be making viral memes of her a week later. It’s not even that her ideas like Kangaroo hop are necessarily trash, but their execution is. Give her signatures to bboy Diaz and I bet he would flip/develop her ideas in such a way that the crowd would go insane.
The Olympics are about showing the best of the best, if this is there best they should just save everyone the embarrassment and not participate on the Olympic level.
What annoys me is you can tell that neither of them have spent any time performing on the street, and absorbing the culture. Because if they had, they would have got told that they didn't have what it takes. These are routines developed in dance studios, with very little negative scrutiny. They're basically street dance routines, with a little bit of downrock. It's not breakdancing at all.

The fact is Holy Molly is a member of Raygun and her husband's dance organization and was a hand picked opponent for Raygun. They both were in on the fix. Many of Australia's best female breakers were excluded from the Olympic qualifying process which was ran by Raygun and her husband's organization. Shame on Raygun/husband for manipulating the entire Olympic qualification process by keeping the real talented female Australian breakers away from the Olympic qualifying process! Raygun did all this in order to enhance her academic profile. But instead she made a mockery of the artform in front of a global audience while disrespecting the Hip-Hop culture. Her/husband have received over $300,000 in taxpayer money since she started breaking 10 years ago at age 26 to fund her research into breaking and founding their organization. She's a culture vulture! She's not a colleague, she's a colonizer - they not like us!!

I have no idea about IceMans claims though Molly was faster and had way more skills so she seems an unlikely plant to make sure RayGun wins. Can't comprehend how RayGun thought she was competitive level, much less Olympic level. At least the Olympic Federation got RayGun's gender right.
I had Molly slightly winning when I originally watched this. I think it was close enough that the hype surrounding "Raygun" was what gave her the win. Either way, there was no one in this qualifier who had any chance of winning a medal in the olympics. What concerns me is all the requirements needed to even compete in the qualifier. There were most likely better break dancers who were excluded due to requirements.
Molly was effortless and Raygun looked as it was a struggle but neither was good enough for the olympics. It’s a shame that alot of talented Bgirls didn’t know about the tryouts until after the deadline.

You brought up one thing I instantly thought, she’s too old! Most pro dancers are nearing the end of their careers in their 30’s. Only the best of the best can last longer at competition levels. She just doesn’t have the physicality to get Better at this point if she has lnt already
I mean if she really dedicated herself to working out and breaking she could get more fit and thus better at breaking but yeah, 30s is old for dancers, especially for breakers. But there are bboys n bgirls still killing it in the 40s, just gotta take care of your body. I'm 35 and I can still probably make Top 16 in my city.
She wasn't the only one at that age, the guy Danny Dann who took the silver medal is 36 years old, B-Boy Menno is exactly the same age, B-Boy Hong Tenn is 40 years old, B-Girl Ayumi is 41 years old!
I gotta admit Molly wasn't really better than Raygun in this one. The only difference was one has the vibe and the other doesn't. If they gave negative points for awkward moves then yeah, Molly would have crushed Raygun. The more I see the more I'm convinced the only right thing to do was to declare it desert.

Generally speaking, Modern School is based on the Classical School. They generally have a very strong Classical background, which they try to improve. But Post-Modern School rejects the Art itself. From there perspective, there is no Breakdancing. Breakdancing is Subjective Art form. Breakdancing is whatever they call Breakdancing.

Could it be that the judges have a lot more familiarity with the moves Molly did, so it was easier for them to not give points because they had a point of reference - i.e. they've seen the more familiar move done better so they're not as impressed with it. Whereas Raygun had newer moves, which the judges had no point of reference, so the judges couldn't really score it as critically. For example at @8:56 you named the exact move Molly was trying to do, but that it wasn't "completed". I think Molly is far more impressive in terms of her strength and physicality. I would have more expected Molly's performance at the Olympics. I think people watch the Olympics to be put in awe by those with superior physical fitness, and when comparing Molly to Raygun, Molly should have qualified.
@@JadeJohnson-ve2tk some judges do weigh creativity and originality as the most important category but yes I think in a competition like the Olympics, pure physicality needs to be given more respect. The judging system they use does not have a category for dynamics or difficulty and I believe they should add a category like that next time.

It's all good if this is just personal opinion, but would like to know how to rate your commentary when watching this. My apologies if you're someone known in the community, I was just seeing what Gunn's other dancing was like compared to her Olympic performance and stumbled across this.
I've been breaking for 21 years, not that I am a known bboy or anything but I have footage in my shorts section of me throwing down. I've also been reacting to and using my own judging system to judge battles on this channel for about 2 years now. Blessings
@@ZennyReacts thanks for responding. I think my biggest complaint with Gunn was her repetitiveness through the three rounds. I feel bad for the people in Australia that didn't have a chance to compete for a spot and for Gunn, who brought what she could as a 36 year old woman to a dance style she started in her mid-20s. In a sense, that's like someone starting gymnastics or ice skating in their 20s and going to the Olympics; they're just not going to match the physicality of people that have been doing these events since they could walk. I will say I think she's exceptionally brave for stepping onto that world stage knowing how far behind those other competitors she is; I'm not going to buy into the conspiracy theories that she organized her way into this. Not saying that there couldn't have been some racism/social caste conspiracy stuff going on, but doesn't seem like the right fit for someone invested into cultural studies focused on minority groups trying to gain entry into and compete in a majority-dominated sport, so if it's there, it was most likely taking place without her knowledge.
Moy and Frost were also on the Olympic judging panel. Frost probably felt partially responsible and is the only person who gave her a tiny score for originality at the Olympics.

Raygun understands the movements . She just awkward and doesn't have bounce or snap for the moves. I don't think she learned basic 6 step and freezes from the beginning. I saw some techs. But she didn't execute them well. She would be helped if someone worked with her and she got her cardio up. I have viewed Australian b boy battles before and they know what's up. Then I belive the Squadron went there to compete in the check mate battle. Also Moy and kid Glyde judging maybe Molly repeated or etc. With a little work she could be better she understand concepts and some patterns. Good follow up !

no. she and her husband picked who could be in the competition to be picked for the olympics. they essentially shut out all the ones that have really good skills so they can rig it in her favor. her husband is the head of this committee.
@kurtcur apparently it's a competition. However the Australian branch was set up by her and her husband. The committee is made up of her, her husband, and people they know. There is a video of part of the competition where it was down to her and some other woman. The woman wiped the floor with her but the votes from the judges, which are made up of her husband and people they know, picked her as the winner. Now there's a massive campaign to make her accountable for all that they've done.
She was an industry plant. Set up by Australia, and whoever regulates or governs the breakdancing sport in Australia.... it had to do with her Academia involvement, so they set it up for her to be first representative for Australia of breaking at the Olympics. I wonder if they ever had any idea she was this bad? She was getting worse the more money/funding they gave her and the closer she got to the Olympics, according to her Academic profile this has been going on years, and of course like with everything else in Australia they censor everything, they would have said no complaints were ever made against her.... you can tell even the old biddies dressed her.... if this was meant to showcase Australia as a serious contender on the international scene, it was designed by stuffy old academics that were so out of touch with reality....i dont think she has ever seen a real breakdancing battle, anywhere , she didn't even know that breaking was banned in NSW schools.... i mean cmon how out of touch do you have to be?
The one in the red jacket is absolutely terrible. The one in the blue T-shirt does at least have some crispness, bounce and rhythm. She's ok, but not great. But the red one is rubbish. When she rolls about on the floor, she looks like a traffic warden having a seizure.

Welp, glad you did this to showcase Australian Breaking scene and where they stand against the rest of the world. However, at the end of the day Raygun brought tens of millions and probably hundreds of millions of people eyeballing Breaking good and bad. Media was going to find a way to belittle Breaking like it has with Hip Hop for 51+ years. I want to see Zenny reacts to all the other battles at the Olympics. Now everyone can just level up from here and help other scenes grow and get better.

We see your point of view and judges point of views in battles and we see that they don't always align, but we can find out why or why not a bboy and girl won or loss a round or battle.

So I don’t know anything. One is more visually interesting from a dynamic perspective but Raygun does “interesting” stuff that is low to the ground. I think men and women are different and maybe the comparison of upper versus lower body movements is what’s giving us “bias.” But I get it the upper body stuff gets you all that power that you can “see” Maybe she’s not so bad in a women’s competition. Don’t come at me 😅lol but you have her 17 points and the other 18. So they’re actually very close. Maybe the judges noticed something else you didn’t from a lower body perspective. Dunno. I think I’m biased too. But if you look at Angola Capoeira it’s very low to the ground and that stuff is hard on the legs. So what’s “hard” is relative to what part of the body is being used.. anyhoo. I still don’t know. I’m not a judge.
Hey your perspective is valid. I love how Raygun is getting more people to my channel, dissecting battles and just generally interested. It definitely was a close battle. No one got smoked.
They aren't actually. It is just the judging panel didn't find better breakdancers when they could've done. I am sure there are much better female breakdancers in Australia than Raygun and Molly.

@@ZennyReacts you're right about getting into style after foundation. If not that order, that's like getting a super-car without much driving experience. Get a Honda or something. You gotta admit without style everyone looks the same. Putting yout own twists on things makes moves look better. The immense strength for big moves is crazy and you'd have to be crazy to not admire that. But at what point are you actually going to do you? The moves that have names are just templates a while after being created. If it wasn't for style you'd just be seeing the same things over and over again.

Foundation IS style actually when you think about it, the foundation OF your style. Gotta have the proper foundation (that also includes the right physical capabilities to do the moves) to even pull off style.
