The Unseen is a 1945 American film noir mystery film directed by Lewis Allen and starring Joel McCrea.
Raymond Chandler was one of the writers of the script. It's based on the 1942 novel Midnight House (US title: Her Heart in Her Throat) by Ethel Lina White.
The film was the follow-up vehicle to The Uninvited (1944), in which star Gail Russell surged to popularity.
An old homeless woman is murdered after seeing a light through the basement window of abandoned 11 Crescent Drive. Young Barney Fielding witnesses this from his window next door at number 10.
Elizabeth Howard (Gail Russell), arrives at the house to be governess to Barney and his sister, Ellen, but is met with aggression from the boy who is unusually attached to their former governess, Maxine, and tells her: "You're my enemy! I hate you!" Elizabeth's room overlooks the garden of the eerie house next door, and she finds a watch that belonged to the murdered old woman in her dressing table.

I don't know what this film cost to make but goes to show when there's a great cast, and great script, it doesn't take flash bang to make a great movie. Very enjoyable. Thank you.VFC

Similarly with Rock Hudson movies wherein so many of the lines he utters about women and love etc. sound like euphemisms or irony and are risible knowing he was an insatiable man eater. 😂

I was born in 1950 and I have studied and researched the 40s and 50s just for fun. Movies from this era seem so glamorous to me. I love movies from this era, and I always check out the hairstyles for some reason. I think modern women should bring back 40s hairstyles. I also like the Betty Page 50s look.

Hitchcock connections: Joel McCrea and Herbert Marshall also starred in Hitchcock's 1940 film "Foreign Correspondent". Also this is based on story by Ethel Lina White, who also wrote the book that Hitchcock's 1938 classic "The Lady Vanishes" was based on, and is favorite of mine. "Foreign Correspondent" is also quite good. This movie also has Norman Lloyd, who just died 2 years ago at the age of 106! He has lots of connections to Hitchcock, most well known of which is probably his starring role in Hitchcock's 1942 'Saboteur' and also a small part in 'Spellbound'. He was also associate producer of almost two hundred "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and executive producer for 63 "Alfred Hitchcock Hour"s. Also directed a bunch of each.

Haven't seen this before - thank you! How tragic that Gail Russell succumbed to the effects of alcoholism that began in her mid-20's. I had a childhood friend who died at the same young age for the same reason. How ironic her line is "thank you, I don't drink."
@robertwalker5521
@robertwalker5521 11 месяцев назад
I believe there is some invisible genetic "thing" that comes to life at the first taste of alcohol. I know or knew four or five young women who had their first taste in their 20s. NONE of them made it to age 40. Two had lost custody of their children...and that surely raised their consumption.

Familiar spirit's when u begin to depend on strange influences especially to boost your performance and skills know that there is a Familiar spirit involved, these hollywoodstars and many great people have often relied on certain drugs,alcohol, etc to either boost them up or other reasons whatever be the case darkness has a role to play
@Dory8
@Dory8 10 месяцев назад
@@robertwalker5521 She was painfully shy and drank to cope. It's not "some invisible genetic thing" at all. It's what she hid behind to deflect attention away from her social awkwardness. Because she felt uncomfortable around others it served as a sort of buffer and as a crutch. Gail Russell never wanted to be an actress; her mother pushed her to do it, even though she suffered terribly.

wouldn't say this is one of McCrea's best films, but still find him very watchable! Herbert Marshall, mostly know as bad guy in films, not seen him in many, but THE SECRET GARDEN w/ him and all its variations was a great series of films....films in my opinion all young girls should see to be strong and willful! Gail Russell great in Angel and Badman; Joel McC pretty much always great! Handsome, decent, great!!!

I can't think of one film where Herbert Marshall was a bad character. In the 1964? Movie , Midnight Lace, Herbert's character ends up doing something illegal, money laundering or some white collar crime, I think he had a gambling addiction he was trying to cover up , but he wasn't really a bad man in this role. He was in so many Rom-coms in the 30's and 40's with the most popular starlets of the time, as well as a couple of outstanding dramatic roles that he starred opposite Bette Davis.The Little Foxes and The Letter are two movies I highly recommend.

As I wrote, I had not seen Herbert Marshall in many films, mostly knew him as evil duplicitous Agent for Peace in FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT. Then I saw him in IF YOU COULD ONLY COOK w/ Jean Arthur, which was a comedy and probably 1st film where he played a more positive role! Then led to THE SECRET GARDEN, which was great! Wish to see more of him!

I saw this when I was little (I wasn't supposed to watch divorce or horror shows, but I saw this somehow), and it scared the daylights out of me...still, and I'm almost 70. This is a masterpiece - I thought it was a Hitchcock film until I learned to read. Masterful in everything: setting, storyline, cast, music - and really creepy in atmosphere. I never thought about having another half of my house empty (as a subject for a suspense movie - except for the attic and other apartments in the same building). 😱 I know I would be hearing things over there all the time - it's genius for a spooky setting - I can't think of another scary movie that used an empty other part of the house. Gail Russell is perfect, she reminds me of a baby Ann Sheridan. Thank you so much, this is the best.
