Are you doing it again this year? How many water bottles did you go through? Did you eat? Hope to see you out there! Good luck!

Yes, I'm, @i8fish . I'm much weaker and heavier though, so not competing for top places. I had two bottles and refuelled twice I think - at 50 km and at 119 km. I still had one bottle almost full at the first stop, so it may be worth stopping a bit later. I ate one energy bar after u-turn at top Cypress Mountain and then only gels maybe every 45 minutes. Energy bars previously suffocated me when in effort. Thanks, and good luck too!

Awesome video. Can’t wait till 2022 gran fondo! What gear set up do you use ? Will a sub compact chainring 52/36 and a 11/32 cassette be good for the hills to Whistler ? Or should I go full compact ?

Thank you! I used 52-36 / 28-11 and rarely used slowest gear, except for parts of Cypress Mountain. Most of climbings are quite moderate, rarely over 7-8%. It's very personal though, depends on one's power and endurance, the race is long...

Amazing!! What equipment did you use to view these metrics on the video? appreciate your help

I used Garmin Virb Elite with 2 frame per second recording speed (so I can easily create fast-motion then). It needs power supply from powerbank, without that it can last less than 3 hours. See the picture at www.strava.com/activities/1794316344/overview . Metrics in this case come from Wahoo Elemnt Bolt though the camera creates the fit data too.

Congrats on your result! How did you overlay your stats on the video?

Thank you, William. I use Garmin Virb Editor which came with the camera (Garmin Virb Elite). But maybe it's possible to use with other cameras too, it allows selecting other GPS sources too (in this case Wahoo).

@@zbynekvyskovsky I guess the camera made individual files and you have to compile them all together with Virb Editor?

The camera creates both video file and fit file (with the metrics). Then the editor it's able to find both and pair them. If you are not happy or have better quality data, you can choose other fit or gpx file from different device. Even for each metric you can choose source separately.

Good vids, thinking about doing this year.. but seems like you started out with the causal riders and didn't have anyone to work together in the first 60km. Is the start line-up based on first come first serve?
@zbynekvyskovsky

For standard distance (122km), the riders are split into groups according to estimated finish time (though some still overestimate or underestimate). In Forte distance, there are much less riders (that year it was about 350, I think), so they start alltogether. I guess I could have tried to move to the front but I didn't know what to expect so stayed where I arrived. I eventually caught the second group at the top of Cypress so it worked at the end but yeah, it's good to check the finish time from the last year and find appropriate place already at the start line... This year, there will be only standard distance though, well, if anything at all...

@@zbynekvyskovsky Good to know.. that's good to be grouped with ETAs as getting blocked-off by slower riders could be frustrating. Yeah I was suppose to go skiing there last week, now just hoping to use the flight credit for this epic Fondo!
