For tyres I learned the thinner the glue the more it leaches between tyre and rim better and gives a better join and also the less you need. I've never sanded the inside of the tyre just wipe with alcohol and apply the tape once applied I then heat the tape with a hot air gun (softens the glue for even better adhesion as well as making it easier to turn the wheel outside in again).

Great video! What may be easier than duct tape: in my wonderful sport of bmx they sell rim lint (rim tape might work as well) which although it doesn't stick, its a very thin and very rigid woven material. Probably more malleable and less stretchy than multiple layers of duct tape(not sure if you used multiple), so this mod could possibly even be improved upon!
