RC PLANE CRASH - 1/4 SCALE "WING WARP" BLERIOT X1 - POWER LOSS / STALL AT WS & WS SPECTACULAR - 2019 

These builders put their heart and soul into their models, then do all the work of prepping and bring all that stuff they need out to the field, then fly the planes for everyone to see and appreciate, for free! I used to build and fly R/C planes and crashing is just part of the game. It's a test of character. This fellow probably has as much fun building and repairing the plane as he does flying it. No need for anger, stuff happens. Thanks for show, mate!

Absolutely the most scale-like crash I've ever seen! The pilot was pretty masterful keeping that contraption in the air as long as he did! And he lived to fly another day. Thanks for posting.

When Bleriot landed in Dover in 1909, typically, the first people he encountered were Customs officials. When they were filling out all of their usual forms, they came to the section which asked: 'In What Conveyance Did You Cross The English Channel?' segment, which, of course, did not have 'Aeroplane' as an option. After a short discussion with Monsieur Bleriot, the box marked 'Yacht' was ticked. So, officially, Louis Bleriot flew the English Channel for the very first time... In a Yacht.

If you fly RC planes of any type it's not a matter of if, it's when.

Such fine detail in that plane. At least he didn't have to dig it out with a shovel.

This is an exceptional posting. We get a peek into the past of powered flight. We can probably assume that the model handles very much like the original and the aviators of the time probably had results similar to the pilot in the video, sometimes with less desirable outcomes for the man in the cockpit. I saw this crash and it was a fairly windy day,the Bleriot had made a few attempts to land but would just not come down,wing warping controls can be tricky to handle. So sad to see such a wonderful model like this go in so heavily but I hope that it can be repaired to fly again.

Was it just me or did he stall that thing about a dozen times before it finally crashed?

Louis B couldn't handle all that extra power and its asymmetrical blast (including P-factor with the aircraft tail down)! It turned his head, literally, and he couldn't control his landing! On a more serious note, my commiserations. It's an amazing model, and I would like to thank you for giving me understanding as to how the wing warp system worked. Always wondered how that was achieved. I'm sure with your knowhow the model will fly again. Best wishes from London.

The 1909 Bleriot is virtually unflyable because it is tail heavy and has huge positive incidence in the wing. It will stall if the fuselage looks level which makes it hard to control. The center part of the horizontal stabilizer has a lot of positive incidence to keep the tail up. The later version has the Gnome radial engine, a longer nose and less positive incidence in the wing and stabilizer.

Ich wundere mich immer, dass diese Flugzeuge bei dieser extremen hinteren Schwerpunkt überhaupt steuerbar sind.

I'm so sorry it crashed , I do hope it is repairable and soon back in the air . I did notice there was quite a strong cross wind coming from the left . Which makes it not the easiest plane to land , and such a beautiful model too !

Beautiful model! Shame about the incident, but good to know it's airworthy again.

Sad to see such a well built model go in like that. It looked a bit tail heavy in the air and the elevator obviously had a lot of authority. The pilot was too heavy on his controls after the engine cut. You can see that the model was stalling throughout the flight and only the power from the motor was saving it from a full stall. Just before contact you can see full up being held but without the motor this will only stall the plane.

Sorry to say flying was on the stall a few times .You do not roll a wingwarp aerie near the ground .The drag was simply too much and the wing stalled and she went in . Turn should have heen completed withe aerie lined up for landing with altitude to spare .Else keep wings level and land .Damage will be the least .

Yes, it's part of the hobby... It's the part that hurts! Nice to know the builder didn't give up and buy something pre-moulded from foam. A lot less trouble, but then it would never have made it into a TBOBBORAP vid! I'm not sure what went wrong, and sitting here in my armchair I'm certainly not going to blame anyone for anything, but I did notice that the (scale) aerofoil was a low speed, high drag, deeply undercambered one, and that the fabric covering on the underside had become detached on some of the ribs, making the wing section flatter. In the full-size planes of the period the covering was securely sewn to the ribs with needle and thread to avoid this. Is it possible that the 'flat-bottomed' section created uneven lift, made less controllable by the authentic wing warping feature, resulting in a high-speed stall? Just a thought. :-)

That was a hell of a pilot he didn't even blink. Beautiful job on the build. I love that plane. It might be underpowered and pitch sensitive.. I talked to the guy who built a replica of the original and flew it Oshkosh. The warp wing is not as easy to fly as it looks. The original engine can be found at the "Fantasy of Flight" near Orlando. They also have some actual era aircraft which were inspired by the original. Great place to visit while the wife and kids waste their time and my money at Disney.

Beautiful plane!

Beautiful aircraft but the Bleriot was difficult design and unstable in pitch. The secret to flying this design was constant throttle adjustment with the ac tendency to change its glide speed. The old designs had much drag and did not maintain a constant glide speed even with the nose pointed down . Stall speed and cruse speed are very close together which make landing difficult without constant power adjustment to compensate for the high drag and small inertia this ac has.

Mikael Carlson, who's been flying Bleriots for over 30 years reckons it's pretty much over if the engine fails. The lifting tail and lack of slipstream make control almost impossible. The whole plane was likely to tuck under in a powered dive, which probably killed Harriet Quimbey and her passenger back in 1912 when they fell out. (No seat belts)

Tears. The original was very difficult to fly. Deeply cambered airfoil. Tiny tail plane. Many crashed. Good to hear he had it up again.

That is a beautiful aircraft.

On approach always keep the wings level and steer with the rudder. That way you’re much less likely to stall.

Hey the originals were pranged just as much as having a good landing. Wood was snapped and fabric ripped. It was the norm. The remaining original acft are flown in practically no wind conditions today.

A beautiful model, what a shame it came to grief like that, it must be very difficult to break down an aeroplane like this for transport, then re rig it for flight and get it right, but it did look a bit marginal in stability in the high wind conditions, I hope it all goes back together so people can see how things were at the birth of manned flight!

Full scale Bleriot's always fly as if on the edge of a stall. Note the angle of the stabilizer in level flight.

Watching this, you get the impression that the design, itself, was inherently unstable, and controlling it remotely just compounds the problem, of seat-of-the-pants reaction to variations in role attitude.

This is why I stick with RC crawlers, I do enough damage at 3mph without getting airborne.

Beautiful model! Flown realistically too. By the way it handles and moves, looks like it flies quite similarly to the real one, like an absolute pig... And to all these random comments saying the guy is a crap pilot..., I'd like to see you fly a wing warping model in those kind of conditions, looking at people's clothes, it was kinda breezy. The Bleriots top speed was barely above its stalling speed, it was not an easy aircraft to fly, and the builder looks like hes been quite faithful towards the power to weight ratio etc. The models not that badly damaged either, wing root will need rebuilt and covered, and the undercarriage repaired, and the nose will probably need straightened and/ or rebuilt, but it's all pretty repairable. Look forward to seeing it fly again.

To play armchair pilot it looked kinda tail heavy. It would explain why it was pitching up and down so much. Probably also why he stalled it so fast when the engine died.

Was not balanced properly to begin with. Must take into account fuel consumption when balancing this type of aircraft or any for that matter. It began porpoising soon after takeoff, as the fuel was used became worse. Also the thrust angle is equally as important. Sure it was a handful landing crosswind.

must have lost power there toward the end...no one would come in with a bird like that (a beauty) under-powered at such an angle. That one mechanical failure cost him several hundred sterling pounds.

Plane crashed 15 times before it hit the ground, flew like a paper plate in that wind. Guess he built it so it is his right to smash it in front of everyone... ;-)

To bad they can't replicate the ound of the fullsize plane. They didn't have any throttle, power was controlled by the magneto. So when they fly they turn the ignition on and off to control airspeed.
