Another very useful video Gary. All your videos are much appreciated. What superglue do you use? The stuff I've got doesn't work well on wood. Best wishes, Noel

Hi Noel, I have used various superglues, I find a medium viscosity works best for me. Some are very thin which is sometimes useful, others are rather thick which I find no use for. Hobby suppliers are probably the best source. The glue you see a glimpse of in this video was 'Loctite' brand from an auto parts store. I liked it well enough, and found it here in Mexico where hobby supplies are not available.

Tapering masts and spars is easy. Chuck one end in drill and a pointed end nail sticking out sticking out of vise or a piece of wood. Push the spar against nail and turn on drill holding with one hand. With other hand roll the sandpaper around spar and hold. You just created crude lathe. Might have taken me 30 minutes to do all mine for Emma.

Love these video's! Almost never see video's about people making scratch built model boats, glad I'm a subscriber! One question I do have: Do you leave the holes for the pins untreated, or do you put in a drop of CA to keep moisture from making it's way into the wood?

I drill the holes before painting or varnishing and I imagine some paint may find its way into the wood. I pass the drill thru the holes again after painting and don't really do anything more about treating the holes. That said, I imagine it would be good to saturate the area with super thin CA after the initial drilling.

@@sailtails2775 Thanks for your reply! Thin CA is amazing stuff, especially suited to treating the butt ends of wood. It really strengthens the wood grain and makes it easier to sand also. Please keep those fantastic video's comin'!

Not your fault, but my hearing is not the greatest anymore. That means I have to turn on the Captions or the "CC". Some of the captions quite frequently do not reflect what you are saying, Gary. Example "100 grit sandpaper" becomes "100 yards sandpaper" Is this a google problem, or something you have control over?

Thanks Richard for the input. I understand about hearing, mine also is not up to par. I have also had some technical difficulties producing clear audio which might be a factor in the google CC captions. I suppose I should add my own captions along with audio when editing the videos. Will try to do so in the future.

Thank you for making these videos. They are a great inspiration for me. I am planning on buying a pre-made model boat from ebay and fitting it with rc components and 3d printed keel, is there any way I can make sure the wood is impermeable to water?

I seal the bare wood with clear penetrating epoxy sealer before painting, and paint with brushed on oil based enamels.

I've been restoring and d Cutter for the last year, making headway but she is a huge project!! I don't have time for much else these days!! Fair winds Gary, keep up the great work!
